CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

I.

Background of the study As an English learner especially for every person who takes Foreign

Language Acquisition (FLA) as his / her class, its very important for us to distinguish between Simultaneous and Sequential Multilingualism on Acquistion Theory of FLA. II. Research Problem What are the differences and definition between Simultaneous and Sequential Multilingualism on acquistion theory of FLA ? III. Research Objective The main subject of the study is to find out whether there are several differences between Sequential and Acquistion Theory. Moreover, the study is to analyze the diferrences and the definition of them IV. Research Variable The independent variable of this study is the use of audio-visual of some videos related to study about the differences of Sequential and Acquistion Theory. V. Significant of the Study First, the study is conducted to give contribution to the development of literature teaching in English education and literature Department, the faculty of Culture studies in Brawijaya University,

espesially in Foreign Language Acquisition subject. Second, this study is to improve the students ability while finding some better ways to teach the foreign language based on the theory. VI. Scope and Limitations This study will be conducted on FLA class for the second semester students of English education and literature department in Cultural Studies Faculty of Brawijaya University, Malang Indonesia. VII. Research Method 1. 2. 3. 4. Look for the video that fulfill the criteria Analyze the video based on the knowledge we got. Gather the evidences of the research. Make the conclusion.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

I.

Definition of Simultaneous and Sequential Multilingualism There is also sometimes a need to distinguish among the concepts first

language, native language, primary language and mother tongue, although these are usually treated as a roughly synonymous set of terms (generalized as L1 to oppose the set generalized as L2). The distinction are not always clear cut. For purposes of FLA concerns, the important features that all shades of L1s share are that they are assumed to be languages which are acquired during aerly childhood - normally beginning before the age of about three years and that they are learned as part of growing up among people who speak them. Acquisition fo more than one language during early childhood is called simultaneous multilingualism, to be distinguished from Sequential multilingualism, or learning additonal languages after L1 has already been established. (Multilingualism as used here includes bilingualism.) Simultaneous multilingualism results in more than one native language for an individual, though t is undoubtedly much less common than Sequential multilingualism. It appears that there are significant differences between the process and / or results of language acqusition by young chldren and older learners, although this is an issue which still open to debate, and is one of those which we will explore in the future. (taken from page 4 5 on guided book of FLA- Brawijaya University)

So we can take the definition : simultaneous multilingualism: acquisition fo more than one language during early childhood Sequential multilingualism: learning additonal languages after L1 has already been established

II. Kinds of differences Based on the definition, we can take the difference of simultaneous and sequential.

a) Simultaneous: acquiring processes simultaneously often happens on the young age results native speaker

b) sequential: acquiring processes Sequentialy sometimes happens on the older age learners results near native or native like

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

I.

Characteristic and Methods of Research a) This study uses qualitative research method b) In this qualitative method we explore our theory about the differences of simultaneous and Sequential theory in FLA study.

II. The Research Design Analizing based on our knowledge, or based on some sources we find out. III. Population and Sample a. People who are multilingualism (they can be unknown acquiring process) b. People who acquire the foreign language simultaneously or Sequentialy IV. Instrumentation a) Personal Computer b) Internet Connection c) Book Guidance of FLA V. Analyzing a) Simultaneous Multilingual phenomena :
From video in Youtube Brando Multi Language Child(http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=5Bu5tZxmgsg). In this video

we found Brando a 3 years old Multilingual child, he was speaking

italian and english. His mother ask in Italian, then he answer it with English, sometimes with Italian. b) Sequential Multilingual phenomena : From video in Youtube American Polyglot practice 20 languages (http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOiXtWcQ8GI). In this video we found Jim a 16 years old American boy who can speak 20 Languages from some Books : English, French, Hausa, Wolof, Russian, German, Yiddish, Hebrew, Arabic, Pashto, Farsi, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Indonesian, Dutch, Xhosa, Swahili, Hindi, Ojibwe. But he still speak 20 Languages with American accent. c) The Difference between them : Brando as Simultaneous Multi Language Kid : - Brando Acquiring 2 Languages from his early childhood. - Brando Has 2 L1 (Italian and English). - Now Brando can speak in any conversation between Italian and English as an Native speaker Jim as Sequential Multi Language Boy : - Jim Learning 20 Languages in his Teenager life (16 years old). - Jim Has 1 L1 (English). - Jim can speak 20 languages, but not in conversation. - Jim get the final result just as an Native-Like speaker.

CHAPTER IV CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

I. Conclusion As an English learner, its very important for us to distinguish about simultaneous and Sequential theory of FLA. There are some differences betwen simultaneous and Sequential, such as difference on acquiring process, the young of learners and the result of acquisition. We will study get something difficult while practice this knowledge, but it`s still better than not know at all. So simultaneous and Sequential theory of FLA are very important knowledge for us and we have to aware them as the student of English Education and Literature that someday we will teach english.

II. Suggestion As the English Education students, we have to realize about the differences of simultaneous and Sequential theory of FLA, because it will develope our knowledge and make us wiser teacher while we teach some students. We will know how to teach the different students with many different factors easily, one of the reason, because we know their acquiring process and we can take the best way to teach them.
