In the last issue, the sound library Live Instruments was introduced in its version for MOX6/MOX8, S90/S70XS, and MOTIF-RACK XS. This time its about the very popular library Phat Analog II.
From now on this soundset is also available for MOX6/MOX8, S90/S70XS, and MOTIF-RACK XS. Here, too, the 128 MB of samples of the XF/ XS version had to be replaced by internal Waveforms. This was done in painstaking efforts by the programming team Ulrich Klauer, Hans-Peter Henkel, and Peter Krischker. And it turns out that the library sounds noble and authentic, even on the basis of the ROM Waveforms! The sound library Phat Analog II for MOX6/MOX8 contains 128 Voices. While the first volume of Phat Analog mostly concentrated on leadsynths in Minimoog style, Volume 2 puts priority to polyphonic synth sounds like synthbrass, synthstrings, pads and synthcomps, as they were used by numerous artists (such as Toto and Van Halen). However, leadsynths for synthpop, sequencer and arpeggio sounds plus FX sounds are part of the sound library, too. Especially the sound character of vintage synthesizers such as OB-8, OBX, and JP-8 was convincingly and faithfully recreated using the excellent preset Waveforms. More information on Phat Analog II and an extensive selection of MP3 demos can be found here: http://www.easysounds.de/ Videos on the soundset can be found on the motifnews YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/motifnews

With the Yamaha MOTIF and the appro priate extension Organ Session it is easy to play the sound of a Hammond B3 live or in the studio, without having to invest in expensive musical furniture. The library Organ Session is an perfect Hammond simulation via sampling, where every note in the chromatic scale was recorded. In addition, the samples are looped in a fairly generous length, which maintains the un-evenness of the original sound. One of those erratics is the so-called leakage noise that results from a crosstalk between adjacent tone wheels. A particular strength of Organ Session is the reproduction of the key-click, which is vital for percussive, punchy organ sounds. And like on the original each key-click sounds different for each key you play. In order to spare some of the 128 polyphonic voices of the Yamaha MOTIF, the soundset contains samples of popular registrations like 16 5 1/3 8 4, Even Bars, or Full Body in addition to the multi-samples of the B3 drawbars.
Organ Session not only contains sound data, but also an extensive documentation with many practical tips plus contains phrases as Standard MIDI files
Sound wants to provide you with tips, ideas and examples of creative use of Voices and Performances for the Yamaha MOTIF.
To allow as many users as possible to participate in this series, all examples focus on the MOTIF XS without additional software support, such as the Voice Editor. As a bonus, some excerpts of each presented soundset can be heard on YouTube. And dont worry, you dont have to be a synth expert! After the sets Chill Xperience and Phat Analog this time the portrait of a weighty classic follows: Hammond B3. The sound of this organ wrote musical history. Introduced around the mid-1930s by inventor Laurens Hammond - an enterprising watchmaker as a replacement for the pipe organ, the classic organ sounds were adapted into rock, pop and jazz by well-known keyboard virtuosos such as Jon Lord, Jimmy Smith, or Brian Auger, especially later in the 60s and 70s.

the volume when performing with organ sounds. Quite a few live keyboardists do not even own a pedal, a situation which should change. Because: As with wind instruments or with the human voice simple volume variations cause a certain naturalness, with which your performance can obtain that special sound, especially in gospel, jazz, or soul. Connecting an expression pedal such as the FC7 is no problem with Yamaha workstations, simply connect them to Foot Controller 1.
Play dynamically for lively organ parts: Expression represented as CC#11 in the DAW Logic
If you dont like to work with a pedal, please use the Ribbon Controller for Expression. performance - the Yamaha MOTIF XF is able to replicate the drawbars using its eight sliders. The footages 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1(= even harmonics) ensure sonic substance, while the odd footages 5 1/3, 2 2/3, 1 3/5 and 1 1/3(= odd harmonics) give character to the sound. When you register you should start with the 8 drawbar and add some brightness with 4 and 2. Or use the 16 drarbar for some stronger bass. Try the different footages on the MOTIF. The eight sliders represent the drawbars of the Hammond B3. Please call up the User Voice 001 (The Clean AF1) and drag all eight volume sliders fully up and down shortly after, until no sound can be heard. The footages 16 and 8 are summarized on slider 1 (for the orignal B3 has nine drawbars, but the MOTIF XF only eight sliders). To break it down: Slider 1 = 16 +8, slider 2 = 5 1/3, slider 3 = 4, slider 4 = 2 2/3, slider 5 = 2, slider 6 = 1 3/5, slider 7 = 1 1/3, and slider 8 = 1. Now drag all sliders up in turn and pay attention to the tonal changes. If you like a creation, store it and continue to experiment. Incidentally, the individual
ever, it is more authentic to use a pedal - meaning: It is a must for the authentic playing of an organ sound. When recording to a DAW you can conveniently use MIDI controller #11 (Expression) to draw or edit curves in the editor. It is good practice to create two separate MIDI tracks - one for the played notes, a further separate track for the controller data. Note: If you dont know much about the use of the Expression Pedal and want to acquire some suggestions, please look into the folder OrganSession_SMF, which you will receive along with the MOTIF-data. There youll find some organ parts recorded as Standard MIDI files, which are named after the respective suitable User Voices. Some files (marked with the symbol EXP in their file name) contain controller curves to shape the volume. Good examples are Ballad Exp, Deep John, or Entertainer.
As you might guess, you can make arbitrary assignments for Foot Controller 1. This is done on the Control page in the Utility mode (Utility, Voice (F3), and Control (SF3)). Expression Controller (CC#11) is selected here. You can also control filter and envelope parameters by selecting the appropriate controller number (CC#71 to 75). You should definitely try this for performing expressively with synth lead and pad sounds. However, for Organ Session, Expression should remain as default.

Organ Session this noise is worked in very handy, as to be heard in the User Voice 110 Samba organ. First, you can hear a wide, slightly distorted sound. Press AF1 to add the click. This is advisable if you want to play solos or more rhythmically. If the key-click is not enough for your solos, press AF2, which reinforces the effect by adding the 2 2/3 percussion. If you want to play very true to style: Organ Percussion is only available for the upper keyboard of the orignal organ. It is adjustable in two volumes (normal / soft) and release phases (short / long). The Percussion Element of the footages 4 and 2 2/3 works in the so-called Single Trigger mode. This means that the Percussion is not heard in legato playing, but only when separate notes are played. Unlike the original Hammond you can program the MOTIF, that every keystroke triggers the Organ Percussion. Anyway, Percussion is recommended for rhythmic accompaniment as well as clear concise solos.
MUST-HAVE-OpTION: FC7
Highly recommended for playing Organs and other sounds on the MOTIF: The foot pedal Yamaha FC7. Depending on the programming this expression pedal can not only be used to control the volume but also the filter frequency, LFO rate, effect depth, or other sound parameters in real time. The pedal is made of metal, has a 1.5 meter cable and a non-skid bottom. Of course, the 6.3 mm stereo jack of the FC7 can be connected to other instruments from Yamaha which have a foot controller jack.
CONCLUSION
So far for a few glimpses of this Organ Soundset for the MOTIF. More important than the over-evaluation of the sound is a lively style of play, which is based on glissandi, grinders, rotary speaker speed variations, and a dynamic expression. With Organ Session the simulation of classical instruments is far from the end. Stay tuned for the next episode of this workshop: Its about FM Xpanded with popular Voices of the Yamaha DX synths. Until then, have fun with the drawbars of the MOTIF! Matthias Sauer www.app-sound.com

PART 5: MOTIF SOUNd ARCHITECTURE ANd CONTROLS
This Synth Guide is a workshop series which introduces you to the basic concepts of synthesizers and workstations with special reference to the Yamaha MOTIF series.
A special feature of the MOTIF series is the continuity in its sound architecture and operation. So if you have once understood the devices concept you can apply this knowledge on the following models. The following devices are primarily
As announced this episode is all about the controller block. This includes the keyboard, pitch bend and modulation wheel, the ribbon controller, and the knobs and sliders.
Normally, this data will be sent to the second major unit of a synthesizer - the tone generator. However, a single parameter setting in the UTILITY section called Local Control determines whether the data of the keyboard is sent directly to the tone generator (Local = on) or only via MIDI (Local = off).
KEyBOARd
The keyboards of modern synthesizers have achieved a certain independence due to the introduction of the MIDI interface. Strictly speaking, in conjunction with the MIDI controller board the keyboard can be considered as a separate unit. Each key of the keyboard gives the following information: Note on/off events (which results in the pitch and the length of the note), velocity, and aftertouch. The velocity is measured in terms of the speed a key is played with. Aftertouch offers a pressure point after the keystroke. While holding down the key variable pressure controller force data. generates The MIDI additional controller
considered: MOTIF XF MOTIF XS MOX MOTIF-RACK XS S90 XS However, owners of older models such as the MOTIF Classic or the MOTIF ES can also benefit from this workshop series, since, as stated above, the basic sound architecture is unchanged throughout the complete MOTIF series (including S- and MO-series).
Since in electronic instruments no more mechanics are used beyond the key, all this information is present in the form of data. This data can be manipulated accordingly. For example, you can change the octave of the keyboard, or add or substract a value to the notes you play in order to obtain a transposition. Thus, it is possible to play in a key which differs from the key you actually play. Velocity and aftertouch can also be modulated - the how and why they are used will be the topic of one of the following parts of this workshop.

The described separation of keyboard and tone generator offers innumerable options to integrate other sound modules or a computer with appropriate software.
The Preset Voices give many examples of meaningful assignments, the creativity of the user, however, is set few limits. In contrast to the pitch bend wheel the modulation wheel has no return spring. Therefore, it makes sense to pull the wheel back to the minimum position to avoid the accidental activation of an effect after switching to a different Voice.
Again a small example: Just by his angle offset to the wheels by 90 the pan position of a Voice or of individual Elements is an obvious idea. The parameter Ribbon Mode, which is stored with each Voice (Voice Mode Edit Common General), determines whether the value jumps back to the zero position (reset) after releasing the ribbon or remains in the last position (hold). So you are able to directly change the pan position while youre playing, either temporarily or for specific parts of a song.
A small example of an alternative usage: Suppose you want to detune the last sound of a synthesizer solo way down below the range that is set for the pitch bend wheel. This is possible by assigning the modulation wheel to the controller coarse tune and setting the value range to the desired detuning (up to -64 semitones). Now you have the normal pitch-bending for your performance within the normal range and you are also able to use the desired detuning on that last note.
AFTERTOUCH
Aftertouch does not have a separate control element, such as the aforementioned components of the controller section, but adds an additional controller to the
RIBBON CONTROLLER
The ribbon controller is a pressuresensitive sliding band, which is also assignable to all sorts of controller data. Due to the fact that its mechanism behaves differently from that of the wheels, you can also use the above-mentioned types of modulation possibilities. With the ribbon controller - contrary to the wheels - you can directly reach a value, without having to scroll through the intermediate values. And since you can program for each Voice, whether the value automatically falls back into a central position or not, there are many possible variants. Here, too, diverse suggestions can be taken from the Preset Voices. here to open up new
traditional function of a keyboard. By using a pressure sensor after playing a key, the played note can be modulated. Almost all assignable controller numbers can be assigned to the aftertouch, even the features that are normally accessible via other physical controllers. A typical application is Expression, which enables you to create a crescendo that is suitable not only for wind sounds. But vibrato, tremolo, pitch bend, filter sweep effects, or the volume of certain Elements of a Voice can meaningfully complement your performance, too. And so again, only a few examples were mentioned. It is worthwhile to invest some creativity here.
MOdULATION wHEEL
The Modulation wheel - or mod wheel in short - has a standard connection to the controller type Modulation. In many cases this produces a vibrato. As with the pitch bend wheel you can of course change this default setting to another controller number. Typical assignments are filter sweeps, effect depths, rotary speed for leslie effects, etc.

Cutoff (Filter) is assigned to the ribbon controller (set ribbon mode to hold) and the reverb cloud to the modulation wheel. By doing so you are able to play your solo with one hand. For changing the filter value, it is sufficient to briefly use your left hand during a chord change. Alternatively, you can use the sustain pedal exclusively for the pad sound - that way your left hand is available to operate controllers during longer sustained chords. As a cherry on the cake heres another tip from the bag of tricks: Each controller can be assigned more than once in order to influence different parameters simul taneously. That is very suitable for sending that last note of the solo into the planned reverb cloud. With the parallel control of AEG release value you can release the last played key after having pulled the modulation wheel up - then the note is slowly decaying in an enlarged reverb cloud. With a third assignment to the modulation wheel even the self-settling vibrato can either be eliminated or at least reduced to a desired level. Consider the possibility to set these
concerning
controller
assignment
you must first have to know the context you want to play the Voice in. Another criterion is whether a well-defined intermediate value of the controller is to be achievable (which is hardly possible using aftertouch for instance) or not. Here are a few tips and a practical example. It is obvious that for operating all said controllers - except aftertouch - a free hand is required. For more complex organworks, it is not unusual that in addition to the player another person is present for choosing the registers and/or turning the music sheets. Although there are plenty of possible interventions for many hands on modern synthesizers, current performances rather not make use of additional personnel. So lets assume you want to play a synthesizer solo and add a pad sound with your left hand over the entire part of the solo. For the solo sound you need pitch bend (+ 2 semitones) and vibrato, you want to influence the filter and at the end of the solo the last note should disappear in a giant reverb cloud. During the solo there is no time to operate a wheel, so pitch bend must be realized using aftertouch. Pitch bend can not be assigned directly to the aftertouch, but the same result can be achieved by using the tuning parameters (coarse tune and fine tune). The vibrato can be synchronised to the tempo of the song and the speed of the solo, it can also be faded in for longer notes within a defined period of time. This is achieved using a LFO - totally without any controller.
CONTROL and MULTI PART CONTROL you can select the current group of functions. TONE 1, TONE 2, ARP FX for the Selected Part Control and REVERB, CHORUS, PAN for the Multi Part Control. The MULTI PART CONTROL button can only be used in Performance, Song, or Pattern mode. The presence of two buttons considerably facilitates switching, because if only one button was provided, you would have to press it five times to get from the first to the last position. The two buttons work together, so that of all the function groups only one LED is lit, namely the active function. For example, if in a Performance the LED for function TONE 1 is lit, pressing the SELECTED PART CONTROL toggles between the functions TONE 1, TONE 2, and ARP FX. If the button is held a little longer automatically the first function TONE1 is activated. As soon as the button MULTI PART CONTROL is pressed, the currently active LED in the upper group (SELECTED PART CONTROL) is switched off. Instead, the first function of the lower group (REVERB) is activated. Now you use SELECTED PART CONTROL to toggle between the functions REVERB, CHORUS, and PAN. A longer push activates REVERB. In the PLAY mode the functions assigned to the knobs and the current knob settings automatically appear in the display. In EDIT mode it is sufficient to select a function with SELECTED PART CONTROL or MULTI PART CONTROL to display the knobs settings and values.

This can be monitored very nicely in the display, where different values appear with the selection of one of the four Parts. indicates the current parameters value of the selected sound. Turning the knobs has no effect until this indicated current value is reached. As soon as the position of the red triangle is reached, it disappears and the movement of the knob affects the sound. Tip: If you find that the movements of the knobs remain ineffective, take a look at the display. Presumably, you will discover the red mark, which has to reached first. This procedure is known as picking up the value in synthesizer jargon. It is usually not necessary if the knobs are at their center position when you call up a sound program. At least with the factory sounds, the knobs were not used to influence the sound, which is quite reasonable. Because this ensures that parameter values always match the locked center position of the knobs. For the sliders a divergence of the physical position of the slider and the actual parameter value is indicated by the red triangle marks, too. The following two illustrations show the principle of operation. First, the physical positions of the sliders are all set to maximum. The set parameter

In addition, the stored knob settings of a Voice are not copied when the Voice is used in Performances, Songs, or Patterns. Normally, the knobs are more suitable for real-time control or temporary changes as for the programming of Voices.
For a start they can be assigned with parameters, just like the knobs assigns in VOICE EDIT - COMMON EDIT (F4 - CtrlSet). However, in contrast to the knobs a continuous control of a parameter is not possible here. When a ASSIGNABLE FUNCTION button is switched on, the Depth set in the Controller Set Assignment is immediately retrieved. The same applies to programmed XA-Mode (Expanded Articulation mode) configuration of the Voices Elements. Well talk about that in a later episode on Expanded Articulation.
The EQ in the Voice Play mode correlates the Part EQ in Performance and Mixing mode
external sequencer later change these parameters, the stored knob settings would be overruled.
With the exception of LOW and HIGH frequency, all parameters of the EQ can be controlled with knobs. But you have to know that the settings of this new EQ are indeed stored with the Voice. But these are not effective in the Performance, Song, and Pattern mode. Here this EQ appears as Part-EQ, but it does not inherit the EQ settings of the Voice Play mode. This behaviour should not be viewed critically, because it does make sense to readjust the equalization of the Voices in a new situation (Performance, Song, Pattern). The idea of a Voice that sounds exactly the same in any other mode as in the Voice mode, should have its limits here.

The new Yamaha DTX400er series offers many features and great new functions. To give you an easy start, Yamaha has produced a series of online videos to introduce you to the new e-drums and help you learn how to play drums.
Ralf Gustke was employed to introduce the sounds and drum kits in various musical genres. These videos make quite clear that the 400 series is not only for beginners. Ralf Gustke is playing with other musicians and shows the new DTX450k. http://www.youtube.com/user/yamahacorporation/videos?query=dtx400 In addition to the product presentation a set of training videos were made with Emre Ramazanoglu from England. In these videos for beginners drumming is explained from the start. Emre Ramazanoglu shows the correct stick holding, seating position, and the basic functions of e-drums. This allows the beginner to immediately start drumming and to learn all the features of his DTX400 kit. The video series will be constantly replenished. You should visit the Yamaha channel from time to time. Have fun browsing! Ralf Mersch
