Course Objectives A. B. C. D. E. Progress towards fluency in speaking and understanding French with attention to normal speed and intonation. Intensive study of the prsent, pass compos, and imparfait verb tenses. Expansion of vocabulary through reading, short films (courts mtrages), and music. Improvement of writing skills through formal compositions and short written assignments. Increased knowledge of French and Francophone cultures through primary sources such as newspaper articles, literary texts, and the internet.

Texts Imaginez textbook and workbook (SAM). Imaginez website http://imaginez.vhlcentral.com (This is where you will be able to watch the short films that accompany each chapter, do required grammar and vocabulary exercises, download the lab audio program MP3 files, and listen to French music. You are required to set up an account at this site.)

MAKE UP POLICY Each student is allowed to make up one exam during the semester. This exam must be scheduled in advance, except in case of serious emergency. If you miss an exam without contacting me in advance, you will be allowed to take it at the testing center, but you will miss the oral comprehension section.

Grade Breakdown
Chapter Exams Five 55 pt. exams will be given. Each test will have a section on listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and composition. Each test will also have a 5pt. section taken directly from the web activities for that chapter. Your lowest score will be dropped, but you must take all five exams. (4x55) Rdactions You will write 3 short compositions. You will correct your grammatical errors in a second draft of each composition. Late rdactions will be penalized 10% per day. (3x25) Student Activities Manual (Manuel) On the day of each written exam, the instructor will verify that you have completed your workbook pages for that chapter. It is important to do manuel pages on the day they are assigned in order to be able to participate in class activities. (5x 10) Short Writing Assignments These are one-paragraph writing assignments based on exercises in the student activities manual. They need to be turned in on a separate sheet of paper on the date listed on the assignment calendar. (Late paragraphs will be penalized 10% per day). Please see attached list. You do not need to duplicate these assignments by copying them into your workbook. (12x5) Oral Exams Three of these will take place in my office. You will be a given a topic related to the chapter, several days in advance. You will be expected to prepare an interactive, interesting, and somewhat spontaneous conversation with a partner. One exam will be done in a small group format. (4 x 25) Quizzes and Assignments These will include worksheets and in-class quizzes based on assignments from the textbook or website. There will also be listening quizzes are based on the workbook audio program. Some quizzes will not be announced. You will not be able to make up quizzes if you are absent. Web Site Activities You will be expected to complete all of the online activities for each chapter by the day of the exam. (5x 10) Written Final Exam Attendance, participation, preparation. This class meets on 74 days. You are expected to be on time, prepared, and ready to learn, on nearly all of those days. You may miss up to 5 days during the semester for travel, illness, or personal needs, without penalty. For each absence after five, 10 points will be subtracted from your overall semester grade. Excessive tardiness may be counted as absence.

Laptop computers and cell phones are not allowed in class. Any student using a laptop or cell phone (TEXTING) will be asked to pack up his or her offending technology and leave class for the day. An easy participation quiz worth a lot of points will then be given to the respectful students who remain.

Short Writing Assignments from the Student Activities Manual These assignments, which are based on exercises from the workbook, must be turned in on a separate sheet of paper on the date listed on the syllabus. Ecrivez quatre ou cinq phrases dans lesquelles vous expliquez o vous allez habiter un jour. Dcrivez la ville ou lendroit que vous prfrez et imaginez votre logement idal. Utilisez au moins six huit adjectifs dans votre description.

Ecrivez quatre ou cinq phrases dans lesquelles vous racontez un moment intressant de votre vie (un vnement important, une rencontre, un souvenir denfance etc.).
