Daily Report

By Elizabeth Brito, Emily Smith, and Carleigh Towell,

Current Event
The Mars rover, Curiosity, has been on Mars for just over a year now. Curiosity's mission has been to find methane gas Methane is considered to be a calling card for many microbes So far, Curiosity has not found any methane, deflating hopes of there being life on Mars There are many microbes on Earth that do not produce Methane, so not all hope is lost Scientists admit that Mars may not operate the same way that Earth does and that looking for life on Mars is a puzzle

Moment in History
1870 - Georges Claude was born. French chemist. Invented neon light by
passing an electrical current through a sealed tube of neon gas

1905 - Severo Ochoa was born. Spanish biochemist-Shares the 1959 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Arthur Kornberg for outlining the mechanisms involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA. He discovered an enzyme in bacteria while researching high-energy phosphates that allowed him to synthesize ribonucleic acid or RNA. The enzyme degrades RNA but can be done in reverse in lab conditions

1945 - Hans Geiger died. German physicist. Geiger counter is a particle

detector that measures ionizing radiation intensity. Ernest Marsden, he conducted the Gold foil experiment that first detected the presence of the atomic nucleus

Moment of Wonder
Why are we attracted to the people we are attracted to? One
word: Smell aka Pheromones. Were attracted to people with whom well have a good chance of having healthy offspring. Scent plays a large role in what we consider chemistry and relates to how our own immune system matches up with a potential suitors (Cadman). Women are unconsciously attracted to men with a different immune system; and we do it with our nose. Mates with distinctly different genetic profiles would produce more genetically varied young (Fisher, 2012). Natural selection pushes us towards people with different genetic backgrounds so our offspring have a stronger chance for survival.
