Stage 3 Learning Plan

Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction
Learners will reflect on how they use Social Media and Digital Communication in their everyday life. They will read the artic le Take Two Aspirin and Tweet Me in the Morning and apply the examples and philosophies to their own practices. Learners will complete the presentation and complete the lesson quiz/evaluation to show their understanding of the material.

Learner Analysis The unit will be presented to medical residents in the Emory Ophthalmology program. The majority of the learners will be between the age of 25 and 30 of all race and ethnicities. Each learner will have completed an undergraduate degree and medical school. They should all be very advanced learners with well above average intelligence. Reflection This was a tougher assignment then I expected. Finding cooperative groups of learners/faculty/coordinators outside of K12 has proven challenging throughout my practicum experience, but finding a program that would support implementing a lesson outside of the already packed curriculum was very hard. I was lucky that the Ophthalmology Residency Coordinator believes in implementing new technology in medical practices and appreciated the idea of Social Media being incorporated into Patient communication. Even with the program blessing my time was limited and there was nothing to ensure that the residents would participate or complete all of the exercises. Of the 17 residents in the Ophthalmology program 9 completed the post-quiz. Without a captive or required audience I felt that keeping the lesson short and concise was key; doctors are not known for their patience and are not often long on free time. As a result some of the information feels incomplete and without depth. Finding an assessment that would provide meaningful information was also difficult. Much of what I wanted to achieve would have required a much greater investment in time from the doctors and most likely not something that would be completed. I was advised to even limit the amount of short answer questions on the quiz

because they were not likely to be completed and if many questions were required it was more likely result in an unsubmitted quiz. From the two short answer questions on the quiz I received a total of 3 answers. I fear that overall the lesson suffered from my conscious effort to shorten the material. Based on the data received from the post quiz I can surmise that the lesson was only partially successful: 2 learners felt the course was very useful; 2 felt that the course was not useful at; 5 felt that the course was somewhat useful. In retrospect the quiz mostly tested the participants on whether or not they participated without much depth. But all 9 participants did say that were likely to incorporate Digital Communication/Social Media in their Patient Care Practices.
