Checkpoint Standards

Locally Developed Exams


Due to budget cuts, there is no longer a state-developed exam for LOTE. Now the end of the year exam is made through a collaboration of teachers district wide. -comprehend simple vocab and structures in conversations -comprehend the main ideas in extended conversations with unfamiliar vocab -convey and derive meaning through repetition, rephrasing and nonverbal cues -engage in simple conversations using appropriate strategies -understand main idea and some details of simple informative materials -write formal, short messages

Checkpoint B:

-comprehend short messages and conversations when listening to others -initiate and sustain conversations with more fluent individuals -use simple and complex sentences in future, past, and present tenses -read and comprehend written materials about familiar topics -read simple material independently -use contextual and visual clues to derive meaning from unfamiliar words or structure -write brief analyses of more complex content -produce written narratives and expressions of opinions

Diploma Requirements
In order to graduate with a Regents Diploma, it is mandatory that a student completes one unit of credit in a LOTE course before the ninth grade. In order to receive a Regents diploma with an Advanced Designation, student must complete a total of three units of credit in a LOTE course. Student must also pass the locally developed Checkpoint B Comprehensive Exam. If student fails exam, they advance to next grade and are able to retake exam. Is this necessary for me/my child?
*The IEP must indicate if a student identified as having a disability which adversely affects the ability to learn a language will be exempt from the language other than English requirement (LOTE).

Checkpoint C:

-understand standard speak in an authentic setting -draw on wide range of language forms, vocabulary, and structures learned inside and outside the classroom -engage in extended discussions on a broad range of topics extending beyond daily life -comprehend content of texts of interest to native speakers -write multi-paragraphed essays, letters, and personal texts -use culturally appropriate learned vocab and structures associated with wide range of topics through full range of time frames
