Lesson Plan for Art Education Majors


Title: Van Gogh Reflection Grade: 2 Unit: Vincent Van Gogh Time: 40min. Description/ Learning Target: Students are going to reflect on their Vincent Van Gogh projects they have made in the last few classes, and then they are going to draw a portrait of themselves. Learning Target: We can reflect on our Vincent Van Gogh projects, and create a self-portrait. Behavioral Objectives/Essential Questions (3-5): Students will be able to reflect on recent projects done in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. Students will be able to create a self-portrait. Pennsylvania State Academic Standards: 9.1.3.B: Recognize, know use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in arts. Modifications for Individual Differences: If a student is having trouble with answering the reflection sheet, they will have individual help. If a student is exceeding expectations with their skills, they will be asked to put extreme detail into their reflection sheet, and portrait. Materials and/or Equipment: 1. 2. 3. 4. Reflection Sheet Pencils 9x12 white paper Mirrors

Preparation: Reflection sheet will be copied. Materials will be set out. Anticipatory Set: Student will first be reminded of what artist we have been looking at. Vincent Van Gogh. Then the reflection sheet will be passed out, and make sure all students write their first name, last name, room number, and date on the paper. Then go through each question with them and make sure they all answer them.

Once students are finished with the worksheet they will be asked to complete of the back of the worksheet, by filling in the speech bubble. Once those worksheets are completed they will need to be collected. (20 minutes total time) Then introduce that we will be working on self-portraits today. Hang up a self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh. Student Work Time: 1. First pass out the 9x11 white paper for students to write their first name, last name, room number, and date. 2. While they are doing that pass out mirrors, and crayons. 3. Have the students set up their mirror so they can see it. 4. Have students add an emotion. * List on the board some emotions that they thought of. 5. When they are drawing themselves make they add an emotion, they draw what they see, and think back to the grandparent portrait when you had to draw your facial features. Remind them everyone must have an emotion.

Clean-up: Pass out portfolios, have students put projects in there. They must then pile them up. Make sure all materials are put away. Be seated quietly. Closure: What does horizon line mean? What does landscape mean? Evaluation of the lesson: Grading the student: Students will be graded on effort, completion, and understanding of project. Within the effort category they will have to use the materials correctly, and safely. Did they complete the reflection sheet? Did they make a beginners self-portrait?
