Burke English 414 19 November 2013 Annotated Bibliography Criteria for Selecting Picture Books: Picture books obviously have to be appealing to the eye. They should also teach children whether it be about colors, shapes, or animals; a child should be able to tell you at least one thing that they have learned after reading a picture book. Criteria for Selecting Non-fiction Books: I tried to choose books that were interesting but that would teach children about the real world. I dont think that we spend enough time teaching about the government. Even some adults dont understand the government system and I believe that it is because we were not taught these things as children and if we were it was brief and never spoken of again. Criteria for Selecting Poetry Books: Poetry collections arent usually hard to find for children. As long as the poems deal with children and the things that they go through or are interested in then a child will like it. Criteria for Selecting Novels: When selecting novels the criteria are a bit stricter. It depends on the grade level, culture, sex, and mental capacity of the children. Some children are better readers than others so one child might be on a 5th grade reading level while another is on a 3rd grade. You must find a way to gage the reading level of your students, what they like and are interested in, and then select books with these things in mind.
