1. Introduction
Thank you for using Power Ge'ez 2009! Power Ge'ez 2009 is a Windows-based software that allows users to do word-processing in Ethiopic fonts. The software is designed to work with all types of Windows applications. Once installed onto your system, it will reside in memory making itself readily available to all active Windows applications. One of the greatest strength of Power Ge'ez 2009 lies in its ability to read and convert documents written in different Ethiopic fonts. In fact, Power Ge'ez 2009 is the first Ethiopic software that addressed the question of compatibility with other Ethiopic software packages. The software is capable of translating 17 different types of fonts. Power Ge'ez 2009 provides two types of keyboard configurations, namely Phonetic and Typewriter Keyboard Configuration. The Typewriter Keyboard Configuration emulates the standard Amharic Typewriter. This keyboard configuration is made for those users who are familiar with Amharic Typewriters. Conversely, to use Phonetic Keyboard Configuration, one does not need to have prior knowledge of the Amharic Typewriter layout. Users can easily type a given word just by analyzing its phonetic pronunciation. The software is compatible with Office 97/2000/XP/2003 and other standard Windows based word-processors. It has proven to work on Windows 95/98/2000/NT/Me/XP and the new Windows Vista operating systems. Power Ge'ez 2009 is a software package easy to understand and can be used by

novices as well as experts. In simple terms, Power Ge'ez 2009 is the Amharic word-processing companion of your PC excellent for use at work and home.

1.1.

Features of Power Ge'ez 2009

Automatic fonts recognition. ]Comes with UNICODE and non-UNICODE fonts. Supports email communication. It can convert documents written in other Ethiopic fonts. Supports sorting and searching features. Emulates the Phonetic Keyboard Layout of Agafari, Alpas, SAMAWARFA, and Visual Ge'ez. Hence, users who are familiar with these software packages can easily use Power Ge'ez 2009.

Support for all types of UNICODE fonts and Agafari, AleXEthipian, Alpas, Compose, Ethiopic, Feedel, NCI, NCI2000, SAMAWARFA, and Visual Ge'ez fonts.

Two installation licenses on one diskette/CD. Power Ge'ez 2009 has proven to work on virtually all Windows applications.

2. Installing Power Ge'ez 2009

Turn on your computer and get ready to install Power Ge'ez 2009. Close all programs before running setup . Make sure your setup license diskette IS NOT WRITE PROETCTED. If it is write protected remove the write protection tab before you run setup from Power Ge'ez Setup CD. Your license diskette has two installation licenses. To move the software from one

PC to the other, uninstall Power Ge'ez . To install Power Ge'ez 2009 follow these steps Turn on your PC and start Windows. Insert License Disk into your 3.5" diskette drive. Insert Power Ge'ez Setup CD into your CD drive. Click on START button and select RUN option. Run window will be activated. At Run window, type in the following command and press ENTER: D:\setup (if setup CD is in drive D:) After a while, Welcome window will appear on the screen. Setup program will guide you through the setup process. At any time you may choose to abort the setup by clicking on CANCEL button. At the end, setup program will prompt you if you want to reset your PC. You must reset your PC in order for the fonts installed to be active.

3. Uninstalling Power Ge'ez 2009

To uninstalling Power Ge'ez 2009 follow these steps, Insert License Disk into 3.5" disk drive. Make sure setup diskette is not write-protected. Click on Uninstall icon. Uninstall program will start to uninstall Power Ge'ez 2009 from your PC. Uninstall program will upgrade number of licenses on your license disk by one. Uninstall program will not work if it is run from the DOS command line prompt.

4. Note For MS-Word Users

MS-Word users must first disable the Auto Correct, AutoText and Automatic Format features of MS-Word. To disable these features follow these steps. From TOOLS menu of MS-Word select AUTO CORRECT. See Figure-1. Disable all the AUTO CORRECT options. Select AUTO FORMAT AS YOU TYPE tab and disable STRAIGHT QUOTES WITH SMART QUOTES option. Disable Symbol characters (--) with (-) option. Disable INTERNET AND NETWORK PATHS WITH HYPERLINKS option. Select AUTO FORMAT tab and disable SYMBOL
WITH CHARACTERS

(--)

(-) option.

Disable INTERNET AND NETWORK PATHS WITH HYPERLINKS option. Disable STRAIGHT QUOTES WITH SMART QUOTES option.

If these features of MS-Word are not disabled, Ethiopic characters typed may not appear or the wrong Ethiopic character will be displayed.

5. Keyboard Language/Layout Settings

Users must check if keyboard language/layout settings of your PC are set to English (United States) - United States 101 mode. To change keyboard language and layout settings follow these steps, Start Windows operating system. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Click on Keyboard icon and select Language tab. Keyboard Properties screen will appear on the screen. Make sure the Language is set to English and Keyboard Layout to United States 101. If it is not, click on Add button to add United States 101 keyboard layout.

6. Using Power Ge'ez 2009

This section introduces Power Ge'ez 2009 graphical interface and the various tools provided by Power Ge'ez 2009 to facilitate its usage. In addition to providing an overview of the software, this section will take you through a step-by-step illustration on how to use Power Ge'ez 2009 efficiently.

6.1.

Starting and Exiting Power Ge'ez 2009

Very Important Note !

Before you start using Power Ge'ez 2009 the Auto Correct and Auto Format features of your word-processor must be disabled. Please read Section 4 before using Power Ge'ez.

Windows loads Power Ge'ez 2009 into memory automatically upon startup. As long as Windows operating system is running, Power Ge'ez 2009 will be active in the backg round making itself readily available for use. Setup program places the program items of Power Ge'ez 2009 in an existing program group or creates a new program group and new program items for Power Ge'ez 2009. You are then ready to start Power Ge'ez 2009 from Windows. To start Power Ge'ez 2009 manually, follow these steps, Open Power Ge'ez 2009 program group/folder. Double click on Power Ge'ez 2009 icon. To exit from Power Ge'ez 2009, from Power Ge'ez menu select Exit Power Ge'ez item or just press Ctrl and "." key on the numeric keypad.

6.2.

Task Bar icon

Upon startup, Power Ge'ez 2009 places an icon on the system tray. This provides fast and convenient access to Power Ge'ez 2009. The icon serves three functions: 1. Shows the current keyboard status:- Place the mouse pointer over the icon; Windows will show the current status of Power Ge'ez 2009. 2. Helps change keyboard Layout:- Users can go from English to Phonetic mode just by clicking on the icon on Windows taskbar. 3. Makes Power Ge'ez 2009 menu visible: - Position mouse pointer on icon and click the right mouse button to display Power Ge'ez 2009 menu.

Settings:- Displays Settings Dialog. Typewriter Keyboard Image:Displays Amharic Typewriter Keyboard Layout. Help:- Displays online help of Power Ge'ez 2009. About Power Ge'ez 2009:- Copyright notice of Power Ge'ez 2009. Exit Power Ge'ez:- Exits from Power Ge'ez 2009.

Settings Dialog
Phonetic Keyboard Layout Type:- Select the keyboard layout you want from the combo box. Keyboard layouts of Power Ge'ez, Agafari, Alpas, SAMAWARFA, and Visual Geez are supported.

Type of Font to Use:- At the combo box, uses can select types of fonts that they want to use. By default, it is set to Power Ge'ez.

Enable/Disable:- Automatic Font recognition. Yes/No:- Automatically starts Power Ge'ez. Apply:- Click on APPLY button to save changes. Close:- Click on CLOSE to close Settings Dialog without saving the changes.

6.5.

Phonetic Keyboard Layout

This keyboard layout is specifically designed for those users not familiar with conventional Amharic Typewriter layout. Follow these steps to activate phonetic keyboard layout, Click on Power Ge'ez 2009 icon located at Windows taskbar. The icon will change as shown below.

Click on the icon again to go into Phonetic UNICODE mode. When Power Ge'ez is in Phonetic UNICODE mode users must select Power Ge'ez Unicode font on the word processor.

Users can make use of Power Ge'ez 2009 short cut key to change the keyboard layout to phonetic. Just press "Ctrl+*" short-cut key (Note: "*" key is the key located on the numeric keypad) to change keyboard layout.

In phonetic keyboard layout, a combination of a consonant and a vowel produce one Ethiopic character. The combinations are selected in such a way that the sound produced by the Ethiopic character and the phonetic pronunciation of the English characters (consonant and vowel combination) typed is similar. For example, to type ""D" the user types "kwa". Most of the characters can be typed in a similar manner. Hence, users can easily guess the consonant and vowel combination needed to produce a given Ethiopic character.

6.6.

Amharic Typewriter Keyboard Layout

This keyboard layout is useful for users who are already familiar with the conventional Amharic typewriter machines. Follow these steps to activate Amharic Typewriter keyboard layout, Click on Power Ge'ez 2009 icon located at Windows taskbar until the image changes as shown below.

Click on icon again to go into Typewriter UNICODE mode. When Power Ge'ez is in TU mode users must select Power Ge'ez UNICODE font on the word processor.

6.7.

Converting/Importing documents

Power Ge'ez 2009 comes with advanced Font conversion facility. Power Ge'ez 2009 can read and convert documents written in different Ethiopic fonts. This increases its compatibility with other Ethiopic software packages. The software is capable of translating over 27 different types of fonts. It supports fonts of Agafari, Alpas, AleXEthiopian, Compose, Ethiopic, Feedel, NCI, NCI2000, SAMAWARFA, and Visual Ge'ez. Follow these steps to convert a document written with a non-Power Ge'ez font to Power Ge'ez font,

Open the non-Power Ge'ez document, i.e. document written with other Ethiopic Software, on your wordprocessor. You will see a text, which is unreadable if font is not installed on your PC.

Open Power Converter and just click on Convert button. Power Converter will automatically detect the font with which the document is written and will convert the document to the format specified in the CONVERT DOCUMENT TO box.

The document will be converted on-line.

6.8.

Working with non-Power Ge'ez Fonts

If you have fonts of other Ethiopic Software installed in your PC; you do not need to convert your documents. However, you may want to use those fonts to do word-processing. Power Ge'ez 2009 supports fonts of four other Ethiopic software packages, namely, Agafari, Alpas, Feedel, NCI, SAMAWARFA, and Visual Ge'ez. This gives Power Ge'ez the ability to read 27

different types of fonts provided by the above stated software packages. Power Ge'ez provides a very easy way of using nonPower Ge'ez fonts. For instance, if you want to use one of Visual Ge'ez fonts, lets say VG2 Main, follow the these steps, Set the font on your word-processor to VG2 Main. From Setting Dialog set Type of font to Use to Visual Ge'ez. Now you are ready to do word-processing with VG2 Main font. Just start typing as you used to do with Power Ge'ez fonts.

6.9.

Other Phonetic Keyboard Layouts

If you are already familiar with Phonetic Keyboard Layout of Agafari, Alpas, SAMAWARFA or Visual Ge'ez, Power Ge'ez has good news for you. Power Ge'ez 2009 provides you with the option of using Phonetic Keyboard Layout of the above stated Amharic software packages. For instance, to change Phonetic Keyboard Layout from the default Power Ge'ez style to Agafari. From Power Ge'ez Menu select on SETTINGS menu item. Power Ge'ez Settings Dialog will appear on the screen. Select Agafari from PHONETIC KEYBOARD LAYOUT TYPE combo box and then click on APPLY button.
