ART MUSEUM CRITIQUE

Name: Ernesto Calderon Class period/section: University of Utah

1) Which museum did you visit? University Of Utah. 2) Describe at least one o the !ermanent collection e"hibits on a theme# !eriod# $eo$ra!hic re$ion# or to!ic% &ithin the museum' One of the permanent collections I liked was a painting made from Gian aolo anin called the Capriccio of !oman !"ins with #ig"res. It is a painting made with oil on canvas. $his painting was painted in the eighteenth cent"ry %y foreigners in !ome that were "s"ally English and Irish. $he them of this painting is life in the eighteen cent"ry in !ome. &e can see famo"s colise"m were gladiators "sed to fight kind of like the acropolis. I can see stat"es of emperors and lions which were "sed to kill whatever was p"t inside this colise"m. $he artist "sed a lot of details in this painting' yo" can see every single crack of this old a%andon colise"m. $his r"ins show the victory in (.) *+, also a temple called $he $emple of -espasian and in the %ackgro"nd a pyramid that honors !oman ."rist Cai"s Cesti"s /012*1 3.C4 3) (ive a brie # one !ara$ra!h descri!tion o a s!ecial# tem!orary e"hibit ) or hel!# as* museum sta &hat these are+ they are usually in one o the irst rooms%' One of their temporally works that they had at the m"se"m was $he Cotton 5oards In 6o"thern 6wamp. It is an offset lithography and screen print piece that shows two %lack people on a %oat g"iding a white person down a swamp. 3etween the trees of the swamp there is a dark shadow that I %elieve is another %lack person. $his person seems to %e doing some kind of rit"al dance %ehind the trees. $he white person in the %oat has a riffle in his hands and it seems to %e looking for this creat"re or something moving that he co"ld shoot. (nother tho"ght I had is that inside this %oat' the white person had two slaves that were driving the %oat for him. Now the %lack shadow is

trying to %lend in with the trees so that the white person wo"ld not see him. If the white person sees the %lack one I have a feeling he wo"ld %e capt"re as well to then %e t"rned into a slave. 4) What do you thin* the museum administration and,or e"hibit curators &ant you to learn or $ain rom the e"hibits you vie&ed? I feel like the administration from the m"se"m wants to show "s the diversity of work that they have for "s. $hey did not foc"s in U.6 art only %"t as well for other co"ntries s"ch as7 Greece' Egypt and' 6pain. $hey also wants to show "s that art in not 8"st painting. $hey had different types of sc"lpt"res and different designed st"ff made of different materials that to me did not really looked like art %"t I g"ess it is considered art. $hey had different pict"res of women hair styles that were 8"st hanging from the wall I g"ess if yo" are creative eno"gh yo" can create art %y 8"st fi9ing some ones hair. $his art pieces also show and e9press how people felt according to their era. $here was a pict"re of lions set free to attack people placed inside the arena. $his made me think how cra:y p"nishment was at the time and the pict"re made me fear that era.

5) What *ind o in ormation is !rovided about the &or*s? Where mi$ht you loo* or urther in ormation i you &ere interested? )-ame three !ossibilities% Each art work was provided with their own little tag that showed the name of the piece' who did it' and the era it was done. I %elieve we can find more information a%o"t the art works if we search it online' also we can ask staff mem%ers here at the m"se"m' or even 8"st read it of the tags %eca"se they provide with a lot of information. 6) Choose several &or*s that !articularly a!!ealed to you' E"!lain &hy you &ere dra&n to these &or*s' Comment on the sub.ect# style# medium# time !eriod# etc' Who &ere the artists? What messa$e do you thin* the artists &ere tryin$ to convey in the &or*s you chose to discuss? This /uestion must be ans&ered in its entirety'

One of the art works that relates to me I %elieve is the %iggest drawing I have seen so far which is a %ig pict"re of .es"s Christ cr"cified in the cross. $his painting was made %y olidorodi 3artolomeo in *;<+. 5e was an Italian artist that I %elieve was Catholic. In

this pict"re yo" can feel the pain that .es"s had to go thro"gh in order free "s from o"r sin. .es"s is standing tall cr"cified in the cross with one nail for each hand and one nail for %oth feet that were placed one on top of the other. I %elieve this is a pretty graphic pict"re it shows %lood coming thro"gh %oth arms and legs. =o" can see the virgin >arry and one of his apostil standing tall ne9t to him. $he message that I %elieve is telling "s' is that we sho"ld %e thankf"l for the st"ff he has done for "s and that we sho"ld follow him. I relate to this image %eca"se this is something I have %een tho"ght since I was really little. I am Catholic and I had seen this %efore in ch"rch. I am very familiar to the st"ff shown in the pict"re. $he cr"cifi9ion is really important for "s' therefore' I think this drawing is the one I co"ld relate to the most. 7) How did the art&or*s you loo*ed at relate to material &e have discussed in class? I think this relates to the topic in class %eca"se a lot of the pict"res we saw in class have the same style here at the m"se"m. $hey all have a meaning 8"st we talked in class' some are pict"res that co"ld make yo" happy' some are 8"st pict"res that co"ld make yo" feel emotional. ."st like the pict"re from the slide show of the two women?s' one with the %roken heart with the other one that looked pretty healthy. 5ere we have similar drawings that co"ld make yo" think a little and make yo" think how this people felt %ack in their eras. $he pict"re of the old !oman Era is the one that to"ched me the most. 5ow people wo"ld %e so violent and wo"ld t"rn in people to the lions to then %e eaten alive. ."st like war why do we got to %e so violent and take action witho"t thinking twice.

8) What &as your !ersonal reaction to this e"!erience? Would you en.oy attendin$ this ty!e o event a$ain? Why or &hy not? #or my personal e9perience I think I liked coming here. I saw pretty interesting drawings with a lot of details that yo" are 8"st like wow@ 5ow do they do s"ch of thingA $here was a pict"re of a woman holding a m"sic %ook %"t in the %ook yo" can see page %y page set "p 8"st like a real %ook very detailed. It was incredi%le how within this drawing the notes on the %ook were painted so prefect that co"ld literally read the m"sic of the painting. I liked it' it was f"n e9perience %"t I wo"ld not come %ack to an event like this "nless I wo"ld really have to come for a class. I think one time of %eing here does it for me. It was great tho"gh@
