Unit:

Kickball

Lesson Focus:

Modified Kickball Games

Equipment Needed:

2 Kickballs, 3 poly spots

Student Objectives: (each should have behavior, criterion, and condition) The student will be able to: 1) (psychomotor): successfully kick the ball (meaning continuous strikes) at least 70% of the time while at bat as well as successfully catch and throw the ball with their classmates at least once during each inning on defense during the final activity. 2) (cognitive): tell the teacher when asked at least one rule of the game through choral response. 3) (affective): work patiently with proper sportsmanship (no insults or discouraging words) with their classmates when throwing and catching in the outfield. National Standards: Standard 1 Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2 Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning performance of physical activities. Standard 5 - Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. ISBE Standards:

19.A.5 Demonstrate control when performing fundamental locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills. 19.B.5 Understand spatial awareness and relationships to objects and people. Overall Safety: students should be aware of general space at all times to avoid collisions students should not stand in the way of a base running to avoid collisions students should use communication while fielding Health-Related Fitness (HRF) Component & Activities that Support Learning of HRF: Today will focus on cardiorespiratory endurance as well as muscular strength. Students will be continually running and throwing in one activity as well as staying active throughout the lesson. This will require anaerobic strength coupled with endurance to be successful throughout the day. (5 min) Instant Activity 1) Description- Students will go through their regular warm-up routine, led by students 2) Safety: Students will be reminded to move with slow and controlled movements and to come out of a stance if they feel any shooting pain. 3) Diagram of activity:

4) Transition to next lesson component: After the final exercise, students will be separated into the two sections of classes, and we will head outside. Once outside, we will talk about our kickball based plans for the day (via set induction). The warm-up will take a little longer than usual including this transition to the outside.

(2-3 min) Set Induction Today we will be playing modified versions of kickball. Kickball is a great way to stay physically active and work on multiple forms of health. For example, with our modified games like last week, you will be running more than a usual game of kickball. This will work on your cardiorespiratory endurance. Cardiorespiratory endurance is important in many forms of activity; did anyone participate in the marathon this past weekend? You will also need strength to properly throw and catch the ball throughout todays lesson. (5 min) Task 1: Cut off Relay 1) Description: Students will be split into two teams of even number, standing in single file lines with appropriate space between the two teams lines. Students in the line will space out approximately 10 feet from each other. On the teachers cue of go, the first student of the line will gently, with control, throw the kickball to the second player who will turn to the throw the ball to the next player in line. It will be specified that the throw is overhand. The last player runs to the start of the line and repeats until all players have gone through. We will repeat the game twice. a. What is the activity? The activity is a throwing relay with the two teams, students will need the throw the kickball correctly and quickly in order to get through their line the fastest. b. Who will demonstrate? Yunae and Hannah will demonstrate with two additional students to make a line for the activity. c. Checks for Understanding: When you are the last person in line and you receive the ball, what do you do? What happens when everyone has taken a turn being the last/first person in your line? What type of throw are we using with this kickball? d. What cues will you use? Go, Freeze will be cues for play, 2) Safety: Students will be reminded that each student throws and catches at their own level; this means that being reckless and quickly throwing the ball could injure your players and caution is important in this activity. 3) Extension/Refinement/Application: See if you can repeat the activity and get through your line even quicker, what is the best way to throw the ball overhand to your teammates? This will relate to our next drill, so try and find the most successful form. 4) Transition to next lesson component: Now that we have warmed up on throwing and catching, we will add kicking to our next activity. (25 min) Task 2: Hands-on Kickball 1) Description: Students will remain in same teams that they were in for the cut off relay activity. Fielding team will spread out in the area of play at least 10 meters away from the target (strike zone hoop). Fielders field the ball and throw it to each fielder, then back to the pitcher in order to get the student out. Batter is out, if hit ball is caught, or if all fielders have passed/caught the ball. Batters score runs by running around a cone placed 10m away (from strike zone and back to home plate). Once everyone is out, the teams switch sides (fielding and batting). Change pitcher and catcher at each inning.

a. What is the activity? The activity is a modified version of kickball that integrates all facets of the game (running, fielding, throwing, kicking). The purpose is that the game involves everyone and increases activity compared to the regulation game. b. Who will demonstrate? Hannah will explain how the activity works to the students, while Yunae listens to make sure I have told everyone all that they need to know about the game while demonstrating the running player. c. Checks for Understanding - How do you score a run in hands-on kickball? When does the kicker stop running after a hit? How many outs till teams switch sides? d. What cues will you use? Go, freeze will be used if the attention of the class is needed. 2) Safety: Make sure the individual you are throwing to is looking so that the person can catch it and avoid being hurt. No personal blocking or throwing of the ball at the runner/kicker is allowed during the game. 3) Extension/Refinement/Application: Where have been the areas in the playing field that have given the kicker the most chance for success? Now try aiming towards these spots to give your team the best opportunity for winning. 4) Transition to next lesson component: Now that the class has been active from playing kickball, have students group in front of the teachers so that they can wrap up and dismiss the children from class. (2-3 min) Closure: I will gather the students and have them leave the equipment on the field. I will go over the health benefits of kickball which are cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. I will check their understanding of the game rules by asking them few questions: How many players do you have to pass it to before you can call it an out? How many outs do you have to have in order to switch? What strategies can you use to pass the ball quicker? I will then dismiss them from class. Assessment: 1) We will do an informal assessment of how proficient the students are at kicking as well as catching. 2) We will informally observe all the students and how well they succeed with our previous objectives of kicking and catching. For catching we will see if they catch at least 50% of the time so we can assess if our psychomotor objective is met as well as their ability to make contact with the ball while at bat. 3) As teachers we will walk around during the lesson and make adjustments if necessary to ensure that students reach the objectives listed at the beginning of the lesson plan.
