eluded. Grade 4, $6.50. 2:40.

Frank Erickson has both written and arranged three easy quartets for four trombones or baritones (treble clef) complete (with scores. All are part of the Contemporary Band Course offered by Belwin-Mills. Jig Saw is a march in Bb, 4 meter, that features harmonic pyramids and challenges students with the problem of playing eighth-note, eighth-rest patterns without rushing. Adelita is a Mexican folk song in j , in which the first and second parts operate in tandem usually in thirds - against the third and fourth parts, which move in unisons or thirds. There is a good mix of rhythmic unisons, either in pairs or as a q u a r t e t , as well as short, rhythmically independent passages. The German March in Bb by F.W, Kucken, arranged by Erickson, is a march in ABA form that will please polka-loving parents and children. The B section requires a legato tongue on slowly moving note values. The fourth part has one B natural (B2) which, if played on trombone, will test the reach of the pplayers and no doubt, the patience of the teacher. (This is where those little ten-dollar slide extenders for younger and smaller players pay for themselves in pitch accuracy while extending the life of the teacher, too!) The first part occasionally goes to Ei>4. Grade 2. Each arrangement, $4. 1:30. A Christmas Jazz Medley for two bass clef baritones and two tubas (or three trombones and tuba) is an arrangement by Lennie Niehaus of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," and "Jingle Bells" (Kendor). The selection might offer a nice concert break for the rest of the jazz ensemble while providing a taste of jazz articulations and rhythms for your low brass players, The first part reaches 04 a few times and sll of the players will have to pay careful attention to the written accents, articulations, and dynamics to make it swing. Grade 3 - $6.50. 3:30. Brass Tacks for baritone-tuba uartet (two of each) by Lennie s is a good training piece

to work on swing rhythms (Kendorj. The figures are well written, easy to read, and have a logical flow. Because tuba players are generally presented with music that has fairly easy rhythms, these musicians tend to be the worst readers in the ensemble. This piece can help remedy such a problem. The rhythmic patterns presented are more complex than those in most concert music, and the player is challenged to listen harmonically and to play a melodic line. Technical considerations include a first part that reaches A4, and articulations of fairly sophisticated swing rhythms at a rapid tempo. All the parts are in bass clef and include a full score. Grade 4. $7. 2:40. Alfred Reed's Two Bagatelles for Four Trombones was written for a college-level ensemble (Barnhouse). "Cantando," the first movement, has a professional quality along with a wellwritten chorale, full sonorities, and good proportional balance. The "Scherzando" exploits the use of hemiola fc meter alternating with 4 in two-measure phrases. The first trombone part in tenor clef reaches A4; and, to accommodate the nimble rhythmic figures in the score, all of the players will need to lighten their articulation, particularly the bass trombonist. Grade 4. $6. 4:30. Suite of Five Carols for Five Trombones, transcribed by Wilbur L. Collins, includes "Coventry Carol," "Carol of the Bells," "Carol of the Birds," "Patapan," and "Ding Dong! Merrily on High" (Southern Music). Representing carols from England, France, the Ukraine, and other countries, these carols are not the ones you constantly hear during the holiday season, For this reason, and because they are well arranged, the carols are very attractive. The first trombone, which does not exceed G4, is given frequent rests. The second trombone frequently carries the melody, and the other voices occasionally sound melodic material. All of the parts are in bass clef; b u t , b e c a u s e of the rhythmic independence of the parts, you will need musically

sophisticated players to do justice to the arrangements. A bass trombone is required for the trigger register notes in the bottom part, which include a few low D2s and C2s. Grade 4. $10. 8:00. Tuba

Etudes I am surprised at how many good etude books for tuba have been published recently. If this is the beginning of a new trend,

a reading standpoint, It is a good selection with which to learn multiphonics. $3.50, 8:00. Logos Ameller is another exdifficult work that rea tubist of great ability and musicality(Alphonse Leduc, Magnamusic-Baton). Performing on a good F or E's tuba is probably best because the range requirements, especially in the upper range, are considerable. The piano part is not as difficult as one would expect for a solo of this type, which could be a great asset when preparing the piece for a lengthy recital, SI5.
Ensemble Literature

Fletcher, is a quartet for four tubas whose first part requires an advanced, college-level tubist to negotiate the range requirements (Emerson Edition), The other three parts are playable by high school musicians. This work would be easy for high school players if one or two euphoniums are used on the top parts. Grade 4. An excellent publication, Miniatures for Four Four Valve Instruments, by Walter Hartley, could be performed by two euphoniums and two tubas, one eu-

phonium and three tubas, or three euphoniums and one tuba (Galaxy). Depending on the instrumentation, the work is either very easy for those playing the inner parts or one that is more challenging. Walter Hartley writes extremely well for tuba so it comes as no surprise that this selection will be a welcome addition to the literature. The four movements are "Marche Manquee," "Schizo," "Pavane," and "Four Valve Rag," From the titles alone, this piece has a lot to offer. $7.50.

The literature for tuba ensemble continues to grow in every direction, with many new works in a variety of styles, both serious and fun. Probably one of the most heartening things to see is that there are now more good works for high school players. The selections discussed here range in difficulty only from grade 3 to grade 4, yet sically they would all be appriate for performance by ege groups. The first, A Whale's Tale, by Lennie Niehaus, is a lighthearted jazz waltz for two euphoniums and two tubas (Kendor). With a difficulty level of grade 3, this work would be an excellent introduction to some typical jazz rhythms for advanced junior high and younger high school players. $7.50. Another publication in this same vein is -4 Christmas Jazz Medley, also by Lennie N i e h a u s (Kendor). It incorporates the Christmas tunes "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," and "Jingle Bells" in a delightful medley that gives the two euphoniums and two tubas some interesting jazz rhythms with which to spread Christmas cheer. Grade 3. $6.50. Suite for Two Tubas by Karen Geer (Ludwig) is a three-movement work that will challenge school players without beimpossible to play, while college students will find the music interesting because the parts are of equal difficulty. Grade 4. $3.50. Sleeping Tuba Waltz by Tchaikovsky, arranged by John
