MY FIANC AND I ARE HAVING A
DESTINATION WEDDING AND ARE
CONCERNED ABOUT THE COSTS.
WHAT ARE WE RESPONSIBLE TO
PAY FOR? WE WANT EVERYONE TO
BE ABLE TO ATTEND, BUT WE CANT
AFFORD TO PAY FOR EVERYONE.
HELP!
Q
A
I come from a large family and have a lot of
sisters. I want to include them all in the wedding
in some way, but Im not sure how. I have a few
close friends that I would like as bridesmaids.
How can I incorporate everyone?
Its best to keep it consistent across the board. Either
all of your sisters are bridesmaids, or none of them
are. Thats the best way to avoid any hurt feelings.
But there are plenty of other ways to include them!
You could have them be ushers or greeters, present
them with a special corsage to wear, highlight them
in the processional- right before your bridesmaids, ask
them to do a reading, or even depending on your
states law, you could have them sign the marriage
certifcate. At the reception, they could even give
a short toast. Just remember to be sensitive to
everyones feelings, while keeping with the vision you
have for your big day!
I recently read about how common wedding
theft is becoming. What is it and how can I
prevent becoming a victim at my own wedding?
Although wedding theft is a relatively unknown
problem, it is actually quite common. The perpetrator
be anyone from a venue employee to a wedding
crasher, who enters your wedding and steals
something from it. Often times, the lost property are
your wedding cards, typically flled with cash, making
them prime targets.
It is scary thinking about thieves at your own
wedding, but there are some things you can do
to safeguard against this! If youre holding your
reception at an open venue, (think hotel or a public
park), youre more likely to have unwanted visitors.
Ask a trusted friend to keep an eye on the gifts, and
even periodically take the items and put them in a
safe place. Think about also having a card box; this
will make it more diffcult for someone to just grab
and go. And, if you are holding a larger reception,
think about hiring security. This will prevent crashers
and lower the possibility of theft.

For starters, when having a destination
wedding, you need to be prepared for the
possibility that not all of your invitees will be
able to attend. Whether it be taking time
off of work or fnancial issues, some guests
just cant swing it.
But as for you and your groom; traditionally
you two, (and/or your parents,) are
responsible for the reception, the rehearsal
dinner, the bridal partys accomodations,
and either an arrival party or post-wedding
brunch. Its always thoughtful to provide
transportation to and from your reception
as well, if it is not where your guests are
staying. You can make things easier on
your guests by working out a deal with your
hotel for lowered or packaged rates.

trends for 2014. Consider sleek, chic, and romantic with these fashion for-
ward bridal hairstyles-inspired from the bridal runway.
Romantic
Romance takes center stage in this sweet
half up/half down style. To achieve this
Juliet-esque look, the front of your hair should
be sleek and have just enough volume
as not to fall fat in photos, while the back
should be full of long curls. Curls tend to fall
(or loosen) as the hours go by. So your
hairdresser may style your curls slightly tighter
than desired to ensure your look will last
through the evening.

Chic
An illusion of satin, every strand is in place
for this gorgeous off-the-face-look worthy
of Grace Kelly herself. This ultra chic and
feminine style is comprised of a coifed
low bun neatly tucked away underneath.
Right above the bun, are two pieces of hair
pulled from the front and delicately laced
on top of it. Finish off this look with a
jeweled hair accessory.

Makeup Tip
Complete this look by dusting
on a smoky taupe eye with a
little sun-kissed blush. Choose a
bright color for lips that pop, all
night long.

Glamorous
For something new, try out an all-new hair
technique in bridal hair fashion.
During your next bridal hair trial try a
woven curl look. The curls are
strategically placed in an interwoven fashion so
that the curls look as if they are weaving in and
out of each other. Create volume to the front of
the look, and add a glitzy hair comb for over the
top glamour with a twist.
Make your eyes sparkle with
deep sultry shadow and
compliment the look with a
wild berry lip.

Bohemian
Boho Chic is the integration of bohemian
edge and glamorous sophistication for the
bride who dances to the beats of her own
drummer. This look pulls two fshtail braids
from the front and weaves them seamlessly
into a curly side chignon in the back. This
look is less polished yet sophisticated, and
when styled with the right accessories lends
to a vintage appeal.
Go boho with your makeup in
a cat eye with soft pink blush
and a bold pink lip.

Classic
Make your classic wedding a
renaissance- a clean pulled back
ballerina bun decorated with
pearls all over. Make the bun
oversized for a look that can be
fun and firty or soft and demure.
No matter how classic your
wedding, relive your dreams as
a ballerina and have your turn in
the spotlight.
Makeup Tip
Soft lips and eyes make for a
classic blushing bride. All eyes
are on you- not your makeup.

could rifle through the
book filled with famous
artwork dedicated to
star-filled skies and write
a message next to their
favorite depictions. After
signing their names,
attendees found navy
boxes all tied up with petite
yellow ribbons at each
place setting. The boxes
were filled with flavorful
artisan truffles of chocolate
blueberry, white chocolate
raspberry, mocha cream,
and macadamia. Golden
sugar sprinkles decorated
their swirling tops and
mimicked the spinning stars

We just cant get enough
sparkle! To get some twinkle
incorporated into our invitations,
we used sparkly, gold
cardstock for the main
card , RSVP and as liners
for our envelopes. A print
of the Starry Night painting
created an overlay on the
inside of the card where
the stars were punched out
to allow the gold paper to
show through, giving the

of the painting were re-

Winter Wonder land
Colleen & Thomas

Colleen knew she wanted a winter wedding and with
Thomas proposal, the timing was perfect. We both love Christmas,
Colleen says. We really stuck with the Christmas theme by using
candles, winter greens, seasonal fowers, and vibrant Christmas
colors.
The couple met at a Gaelic Society meeting in college,
so including their Irish heritage in their wedding was important to
both of them. Celtic music was a big part of the festivities, from
ceremony music to reception dancing. The Immaculate Conception
Church was decorated wth red and white fowers and served as
the breathtaking backdrop to their traditional Catholic wedding.

BRIDAL DETAILS
For this couple, the wedding
party was a no-brainer. Our
wedding party worked out
perfectly, because I have two
sisters and a brother, and
Tommy has two brothers and
a sister, Colleen says.
To include a little holiday spirit
in their nuptials, Colleen and
her sisters sang a Christmas
carol at the end of Mass. The
musical festivites continued
with a bagpiper that led guests
into the reception.
After the ceremony, guests
traveled to The View on the
Hudson in Piermont, New York,
where they dined and danced
amidst picturesque views of
the river. It was important
to Colleen and Thomas that
everyone had a great time
at their reception, so they
kept the energy high. We
had lively instrumental music
at the cocktail hour to get
everyone in the mood. We
were then treated to a lovely
dinner, music, and dancing for
the remainder of the night,
Colleen says.
No Irish wedding would be
complete without dancing.
Colleen and her sisters did
some Irish dancing and guests
were on the foor until the wee
hours of the night.
Colleen says, It was truly an
enchanting wedding! | RR

THE BRIDE: Colleen wore a beautiful white wedding dress
with cap-sleeves and a lace bodice. She kept the cold at
bay during the outdoor photographs with a gorgeous white
wrap. The traditional white wedding dress made me feel
like an All-American Bride, Colleen says.
THE GROOM: Tommy dressed up in a traditional black tux-
edo. He stood out from his groomsmen with his white vest,
bow tie, and white rose boutonniere.
THE WEDDING PARTY: The bridal party wore long red
gowns in silk tafeta with gathered skirts. The groomsmen
complemented the bridesmaids gowns by wearing bright
silk bow ties and matching vests that were set of with
boutonnires in the perfect shade of red rose buds.

TIP
A quality photographer is very important- probably the

photographers who dont charge a ton. The photos reminded
us of many special and quirky moments that we had already
forgotten, and brought back many of the nights emotions.
70 IN BLISS
here were traditional pieces
to the ceremony, Dina says,
like community support, tributes
to the couples parents, and
the exchanging of vows and
rings. They also added a few
elements to personalize their
special day. We included a lot
of information
about each other, our unique
and shared values, our love
story, and our hopes for the
future, so that guests who
did not know us well would
feel more connected to us as
a couple by the end of the

With the museum space being flled with
spectacular paintings and sculptures, Dina and
Robert left their dcor minimal. Ivory fowers
complemented the deep hued red and orange
walls of the space. One of the best bonuses of
their museum venue? It had its own perfectly
positioned uplighting.
We wanted to keep everything simple because
the museum really spoke for itself, Dina says.
Another perk to the couples venue was its
location. Being right downtown, transportation
to the venue was optimal and easy, We [didnt]
have to shuttle guests anywhere, which reduced
the hassle, stress, and cost.

rom hand-painted signs, to handpicked bouquets, every detail of
their wedding included artful elements of craftiness. Shelby and
her mom spent the months before the wedding scouring thrift
stores for vintage bottles and tableware to use for the receptions
centerpieces. Thrifted suitcases and cages were used to hold
guests well wishes and cards at the guestbook table. The end result
of months of collecting was a fabulous array of kitschy pieces that
matched the couples vision for their celebration.

Shelby and Jonathan chose to exchange vows in a lush garden
under a canopy of green foliage and draped tulle. Though their
ceremony was intimate, their wedding party was sizablefve
bridesmaids and fve groomsmen. Each member of the wedding
party got to let their personalities shine through in the form of
colorful bowties for the guys and sweet cardigans for the girls. We
love how each pair coordinated!

Guests were transported from the ceremony to the reception by
way of trolley. The whimsical red and green wagon added a perfect
amount of vintage charm to the day. The reception was held at The
Grand Opera House, where guests feasted on fall favorites before
making their way to Shelby and Jonathans old-fashioned candy
bar. Nostalgic favorites like candy buttons and Mary Jane tafes
were the perfect vintage takeaways for guests to munch on. The
magnifcent autumn day gave way to a crisp evening as guests

Dont forget the boutonnieres! Yellow roses are an
enduring favorite, but sunfowers, calla lilies, and
orchids can form an equally memorable addition
to the grooms tuxedo. For a trendy fall alternative,
try the billy ball. Also known as craspedia, these
spherical fowers resemble tiny globes of sunshine.
Love roses? Skip the typical pink or red in favor of
golden tones. The Loro Verde green eye garden
rose is an excellent choice for a pinch of rustic style.
Its rufled petals create a peony-like appearance,
while a thick green swirl fashions the eye. Another
option is the whimsical lemon pompom garden
rose, whose yellow blossom opens into elaborate
whirls. Either one is perfect for a romantic, vintage-
inspired garden wedding.
Yellow calla lilies have become very popular
wedding fowers, and its easy to see why. Aside
from the beauty of their distinctive trumpet-
shaped petals, arranging them is a breeze. Peruvian,
trumpet, and tiger lilies also exhibit yellow fowers
and, like calla lilies, add a dazzling touch to your
wedding. Plus, lilies durability ensures theyll last all
night.

Youll have an inexpensive and sunny country bouquet
in no time.
No matter the theme or season, you can pair yellow
fowers with each other or with contrasting colors
to create the perfect mood. Whether your wedding

An indoor venue is usually best for these winter months. There are
several options all over the country that have cool elements, like
large freplaces in the reception hall. If your heart is set on an outdoor
look, bring it inside with trees covered in crystal-hued twinkle lights
or an aisle-long promenade covered with blue-lit branches. For a
whimsical touch, hang paper fowers from large white trees. You will
be amazed how adding dramatic details like a few pine trees will
give an incredible wow-factor for your guests.

enterpieces are a great way to incorprate a winter
theme into your wedding. This will be the focus for
many guests throughout the dinner hour, so make
it stand out! For a Winter Wonderland wedding,
snow covered or metallic branches are a perfect
touch. Or try tumbler vases flled with pinecones
for a sleek look. We also love the snowy efect
white fowers can add to winter dcor. If you love
candles, try a mix of white blooms with tea lights to
add a gorgeous glow to tablescapes.
C
C
andelabras make an impressive statement and
leaving fowers out of the centerpieces is gentle on
your budget. Of course, for a Christmas wedding,
the simplicity of pillar candles with red poinsettias
will make guests feel like they are in front of their
own freplaces. This feeling takes the chill out of the
cold winter night.

Natural tones are a great starting place.
Combining warm tones like ivory, honey,
and mauve will make your reception
evoke visions of a snowy morning sunrise.
To update a natural winter palette, think
greens and browns- to pull of the look of a
pine forest. We love pairing a deep green
with a lighter fern color and then topping it
of with a tan tone.
Of course, if the wedding is closer to
the Christmas holiday, red and green
are traditional, but you can give them
a modern twist by adding a pop of
pink or using two tones of greena
light and a dark.
We love the look of navy with jade
green for a new spin on old-fashioned
Christmas color combinations..

Ditch the numbers and instead, name tables after holiday song titles. For example, you can
assign guests to the Jingle Bells, the Deck the Halls, and the Silent Night tables. If you want
to keep on point with a winter theme after the holidays, try naming tables after evergreen
trees with an elaborate boughed creation on each one. Greenery can be sculpted into
twisting modern masterpieces, or stand elegantly in more traditional vases. Added bonus:
evergreen branches are likely to cost less than most fowers, even if you do get a little more
sculptural in your taste.
REMEMBER
Dont overdo it!
Incorporate your
theme subtly, so it
doesnt get overly
elaborate.
We love these Twelve Days of Christmas plates
that Sacramento bride and groom, Stacey and
Mark, used for their reception. Each table was
marked with a diferent character from the
song. The best part? Theyre already numbered!
You dont need to change each tables theme
individually, but guests will appreciate a little
homage, like a tiny bird in the foral centerpiece
or fve golden rings decorating a vase.

Stargazing is inexpensive, takes
little planning, and is one of the most
romantic things you and your
signifcant other can do together.
You can easily cuddle up in your
own backyard, but why do that
when there are viewing spots across
the U.S. to see the stars as our
ancestors did, before light pollution?
At these locations, you wont just
spot stars, but galaxies, star clusters,
the Aurora Borealis, and a
breathtaking view of the Milky Way
as youve never seen it before. So
fnd the location closest to you, hop
in your car, and marvel in a show
that only the galaxy can display.
Why: Sixteen miles from the nearest
town, and more than a hundred miles
from a big city, the starry view from
the Sacramento Mountains is hard to
beat. Because of the altitude and dry,
clean air of the desert, fog is rare. But
dont just be on the lookout for stars,
New Mexico is also a hub for U.F.O.
activity.
Youll See: Venus, Mercury, The Milky
Way, Beehive Star Cluster,
Andromeda Galaxy.
Best Time: April-May and September-
November.
Why: Nearly 2,300 miles from the
U.S. mainland, the views from
the top of the 10,000 foot shield
volcano, Mount Haleakala, are
unparalleled. Situated above
the clouds, Haleakala always
has a clear view of the night sky.
Make sure to pack a jacket and
blanket, as it can be cold up
there, even when its summer.
If you get to the top early, you
can even catch the much
talked about sunset that bathes
the craters of the park in pink
and purple.

Youll See: Venus, Mercury, The
Milky Way, Beehive Star Cluster,
Andromeda Galaxy.
Best Time: May-October.
Why: The Florida Keys are unique
in that they are the only place in
the continental U.S. where you can
view equatorial features, such as
The Southern Cross. Tired of sitting
on the beach to stargaze? Hop on
the Schooner Western Union for a
guided tour of the dark skies all on
the open ocean where youll not
only see numerous constellations,
but learn how to use them in
navigation like a true mariner.

Youll See: Southern Cross, The
Great Square, Bikini Bottom.
Best Time: May-June.

Florida Keys, Florida Why: Being so close to the city, there is
a bit of light pollution here, but the easy
access to high altitudes offers some of
the darkest skies in the U.S. The winter
is cold in Colorado, but also the prime
time to see the stars at their brightest, as
atmospheric conditions are optimum.
Youll See: Aurora Borealis, Planetary
Conjunctions, Comets, Polaris, Orion
Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy.
Best Time: November-February.
Why: The Northeast may not get a lot of
stargazing attention, but this state park is one of
eight to be named an International Dark Sky Park.
Under the very best conditions, the Milky Way is so
clear, it can actually cast a shadow. Many
constellations are viewable here throughout the
year, making Cherry Springs a great place to go
during different seasons.
Youll See: The Milky Way, Perseids Meteor Shower,
Aurora Borealis, Summer Triangle, Pegasus.
Best Time: May-September.
Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania
Stargazing Tips:
Most of these locations, being at higher altitudes, can get pretty
chilly. Be sure to bring a blanket, jacket, or even a sleeping bag
to cozy up together. A chair, preferably one that reclines, can
help in making your viewing more comfortable. While all of these
locations have been chosen based on what you can see with the
naked eye, binoculars or a telescope will only enhance your star
spotting. While stargazing requires little more than looking up, our
suggestions will only facilitate in a fun and romantic viewing.

Send Off
frosty farewell
Kristin & Robert, March 17, 2012
PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEXANDRA HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY
Kristin and Robert were hoping for a day without rain-- which is a lot to ask for in Canada during early spring. The odds were
in their favor though, and they were able to take advantage of the outdoor river views for beautiful shots like this one. A fur
shrug kept the chill of the mid-March afternoon at bay and is in perfect sync with the couples vintage details. The groom
and groomsmen paid tribute to the formal days of old in top hats and tailcoats.
Our ceremony was short, but beautiful. All of the readings were delivered in both English and Italian. It represented our
cultures perfectly. [Remember to] enjoy every moment. Both the planning process and your wedding day will go by so fast.
