Summary
An altar of sandstone (pl. I/1; fig. 1) and a patera handle of ceramic (pl. I/2)
were found as chance finds close to the village of U{}e near Obrenovac (pl. I/3).
The inscription on the altar consists of four lines: I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) | Ius
La[ ? ] | Sept(imius) Sev(e)|rus vet(eranus). The mention of the veteran from the
time of Septimus Severus and the form of the lettering allow the alter to be dated
with confidence to the first third of the 3rd century. The inscription on the patera
handle of ceramic reads: I(ovi ) O(ptimo) M(aximo). Finds of ceramic patera are
not frequent and this shape of handle has no precedents to date in the province of
Pannonia Inferior. On the basis of the workmanship alone (clay matrix and surface
treatment) the handle can be dated approximately to the first half of the 4th cen-
tury. Both objects were found on the borders of the cemetery of a Roman settle-
ment on the right bank of the Vukodra` river where it joins the Sava (pl. I/3, sites
1–2), while on the left bank of the Vukodra` there is a Roman fort (pl. I/3, site 3),
located in the province of Pannonia Inferior. The fort and the settlement were on
the road between Sirmium and Singidunum, which followed the right bank of the
Sava, the course of which has been established at several points. The garrison of
this fort did not guard the road alone, but also, and far more importantly, the traf-
fic on the river Sava. Traces of brickwork on the back of the altar suggest that it
may have been built into what was probably a sacral structure. The dedication to
Jupiter on the patera handle suggests that it was probably used in sacrifice, rather
than being an item of grave goods. The altar and the patera handle indicate the ex-
istence of a sacral structure on the border of the cemetery at U{}e. During archae-

ological investigation at the same site in 1967 (pl. I/3, site 4) walls were discovered,
the dimensions of which preclude their being graves, while their proximity to the
cemetery means they were not habitations, which leaves the possibility that there
was a shrine at the site. The long period over which the settlement was occupied,
the importance of the road which passed by it, and the presence of the fort also
make it more likely that this was the case.
