Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography Being turned down from a job because of race, gender, or social class is unfair, and happened more than people think. More than often, employers turn qualified workers down for a job, or benefits, and discriminate them based on numerous qualities. In Working in the Shadows, by Gabriel Thompson, Gabriel discusses how voting for democrats and republicans involves different laws, and banning discrimination is a big issue. Although affirmative action still exists in todays society, favoritism and discrimination prevent qualified workers from equal opportunities; therefore, employers should focus more on demographics in their work place. This essay will explore the different opinions on affirmative action and how it should be prevented, or stopped. I will explain in detail the correct meaning of affirmative action and how it is affecting some people of the United States. Further, I will discuss how it affects the families of the qualified workers experiencing discrimination. I will also explain how immigrants are discriminated and how it affects their families. I will compare different ways to stop the favoritism and discrimination in work places, and provide examples of cases fighting discrimination. The selected annotated bibliography includes sources, studies, and interviews. The Bean article addresses the rising argument on how white men dominate places of work and are treated more superior. The Alarcon and Novak article displays the different ways immigrants are treated unequally in places of work and how discrimination affects their families. The Dennis and Bratter article reviews how women are affected by discrimination through their jobs, and offers solutions throughout the article. The Human Rights Report, revolves around the concept of stopping discrimination and favoritism in the working world. Lastly, the Sipe and Fisher article addresses the idea of educating college graduates and employees about the realities of workplaces and discrimination. Together, these sources provide all the information on discrimination and favoritism, and how America should put an end to it.
