Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

Newsletter No. 28 December 2013

Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,
What an interesting night. It began with assorted members carrying boxes of goodies for the bring & buy. Music, magazines, CDs, videos, assorted guitar spares and even a few guitars were all displayed in a separate annex room at the side of our regular meeting room (the old ticket office).

Following a good hours worth of rummaging it was time to start with the regular players night. This kicked off with Andy Hulme and Darren playing Honeysuckle Rose followed by On a Clear Day. Both tunes were beautifully played and, as ever with musicians of this quality, it sounded as if they had played together for years. In actual fact this was the first time that they had played together. Next up was Robins short talk on more modern players. This was a useful list of whos out there for people to check out in their own time. It was a handy overview for those unfamiliar with the names and a helpful starting point for further listening. Robin was followed by a scaled down version of The Idle Guits; comprising this time of only three players. They played a nice contrapuntal version of Fly Me to the Moon. A great theme arrangement with every guitar taking a vital and effective voice. Darren and Colin were the featured soloists. The first half was brought to a close by Idle Guit Tim playing a slow blues in C.

Following the interval two new faces at HJGS, Dave Evans (right) and Mike Dexter (left) played a Django set, starting with Minor Swing followed by I Cant Give You Anything But Love. All played on Maccaferri/Selmer look-alikes and sound-alikes, with just the right combination of sparkle and brashness. HJGS then gave a very warm welcome to guest duo Trefor Owen and Andy Hulme who began their set with Jerome Kerns Yesterdays. This was followed by How About You in a tasty arrangement with a beautifully harmonized head. Their enjoyable set concluded with Mancinis Days of Wine and Roses. Trefors and Andys mainstream jazz guitar set was then contrasted by the more earthy funk-based music of Martin and Jez whose set began with Thats Why That Happened an original composition by Jez with a gentle bossa feel. Jez took the first solo which was imbued by a Mullenish fleshy (thumb) tone. Great playing but a little marred by tuning issues. New strings? Or too light for the genre? Martins playing has become more studied and careful, exactly what is required to realize his profound musical vision and move away from a lick informed approach. Their second tune, a laid back reading of Mr PC, was an altogether funkier affair, replete with bends, slaps and slides.

Members News Call for Membership Participation

We have a few successful, I believe, examinations/investigations of members favourite tunes. If you feel you could do a similar job please let me know. Send an email to huddjazzguitsoc@gmail.com or chat to any of the committee at the next meeting.

Remember the HJGS exists for the benefit(s) of its members, so we need to hear from YOU: good, bad, indifferent, news, views, gossip, ideas, viewpoints, gigs, sales wants, swaps etc, etc! Please keep us informed of any jazz guitar related gigs, events, sales or other item of interest, so that we can pass information on to other members. HJGS needs to develop its wider network as an important forum for jazz guitar related information and information exchange, so that we may all benefit from the collective wisdom and uncoordinated information that undoubtedly exists amongst fans and connoisseurs.

Diary of a Seven String Virgin

A blow by blow account of getting to grips (sic) with the 7 string guitar.

Ian Wroe Week 3. I need to get used to the un-natural interval (a 5th) between the A and E bass strings so I start practising 10ths (think 3rds but with more strings between). Still having trouble with seeing the extra string and wondering if my hands are in the right place. Week 4. Bass string still a bit slappy so up to 76 thou. As a guitarist I would normally only think to tow a car with a piece of cable this thick, still it seems to do the trick. Start working on chords which would normally have bass on 5th string. The mechanics of moving a finger the extra inch over proving troublesome. Week 5. Week 6. First gig on 6 string where I started reaching over for the 7th string. Looks like Im going to have to decide which route to take. First gig on 7 string. A duo with the lovely Carol Brown singing. Having the extra bottom end on the guitar really fills the sound out. Im getting to like this.

More Festive Fun (Bah Humbug) Jazz Guitar Christmas Advent Calendar
For a bit of seasonal festive fun why not take a look at the GuitarBytes advent calendar. Each day when you open a door youll find a video performance by HJGS member Darren Dutson Bromley showing you how to play a different Christmas song especially arranged for the calendar. Each piece is accompanied by a score to help you learn it. The songs vary in difficulty, some are intermediate level some are more advanced but each is a useful lesson in arranging as well as a worthy addition to the Christmas repertoire. http://www.guitarbytes.co.uk/podcasts/advent/

Makin It & Take Your Pick Johnny Pisano and Billy

Bean. Fresh Sound Records FSR-CD 736 Back in 1970 as a cash-strapped music student, I came across a copy of Makin It at a Birmingham flea-market. I had just enough money for a tin of beans (no pun intended) and my bus fare home. As I was, even then a jazz guitar fanatic, I carefully studied the sleeve notes. Billy Bean! Who was this player with a cartoon character/comic book name? Was it a pseudonym, was he any good, was it commercial rubbish or was it an anonymous non-jazz playing studio guitarist? All of those questions were running through my head. I had come across John or Johnny Pisano, as he was then known, but knew little of his work and had yet to make the connection that he was the suave looking guitarist who skilfully wove the descending diminished passage from the Villa Lobos Study No 1 (for classical guitar) into his featured solo with Chico Hamilton in the classic Jazz On A Summers Day film. Anyway my ignorance, coupled with shortage of money and some concern re the condition of the LP (already 12 years old by then) led me to put it back in the record bin! What a stupid mistake. Ironically, John Pisano told me a similar story years later about seeing the name on a Charlie Ventura album and thinking surely a guy with a name like that has to be suspect. He bought the album anyway because it also featured Dave McKenna, Johns favourite pianist at the time. He got the album home and was totally blown away by Billys playing, so much so that within months he had located Billy and insisted they get together. The first fruits of their work can be found on Makin It Again on which they can be heard jamming in the basement of Johns parents home in New York. Their first official recording, for Decca, was made in Jan/March of 1958. The album: Makin It is rather an uneven affair with predominantly fussy arrangements in the then fashionable Third Stream style including strings, oboe, tuba and the like, mixed in with typical West Coast period arrangements by Fred Katz, Bill Potts and Calvin Jackson. The entire record is rescued, however, by one really stunning track: The Song Is You. This is performed by a stripped down trio comprising Billy, John and bassist Hal Gaylor a brilliant and unsung player in his own right. The playing on this cut is mind blowing, worth the price of the LP many times over. The technique of both guitarists is flawless, their time is perfect and their ideas and sounds complement each other perfectly. Billys early, electric, Epiphone Deluxe has the bigger fatter, more electric, tone while Johns DAngelico Excel is more acoustic, with that stringy floating pickup tone. Gaylors bass is big round and beautifully driving. The results are sublime, a real jazz guitar masterpiece! Take Your Pick the duos follow-up album for Decca is an altogether more successful affair. Again it features predominantly arrangements in the popular West Coast style (think Shorty Rogers, Gerry Mulligan, Marty Paich) with only one Third Stream arrangement: Pastorale, the most ambitious but, in my opinion, weakest track on the album. This album also features several great originals by John and Billy such as the title track, Fat Feet, Billys Beanery and Pixie all of which prove perfect vehicles for the duo. Billys tone is wonderfully fat and full his drive is unsurpassed in the vein of early Joe Pass (CED, Catch Me etc.) and mid 60s Pat Martino (The Prestige albums) and his lines have the creativity and skill of Clifford Brown. If, arguably, Billy is the stronger soloist, John is the chord master with a great rhythmic tone and beautiful voice leading. However, Billy is no slouch as a chord player and John is a perfectly capable soloist. In short, the perfect team.

11

Take Your Pick was my introduction to Billy. I once paid the price of a small car to obtain a clean copy in an auction. To return to my earlier story, several years after passing on Makin It a friend and great jazz player (Mel Gibbons) lent me a copy of Take Your Pick. It was, like my first experience of Wes Montgomery, life changing, through lifes ups and downs Take Your Pick has always been with me, one of the tiny handful of possessions from which I am inseparable. Miss this reissue at your peril!! Adrian Ingram ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is a new guitar strap/support we came across at a recent guitar show. It looked very impressive.

Most jazz guitars have magnetic pickups and jazz guitarists often have strong views as to which type or make of pickup provides them with their favoured sound. Many players will take the trouble to fit replacement pickups in order to find the ideal sound for their taste. There is a wide choice available. However for the player who requires a true acoustic tone for their style of playing, Hot Club for example, all too often the choice is limited to a microphone (mic) on a stand or an under saddle transducer. The worst case scenario is when the guitarist has to borrow whatever mic comes with the house P.A., point it at the instrument and hope for the best! If the player is lucky, the mic will be one designed for instruments rather than the more common vocal mic, (an SM58 is great for vocals but its frequency response and proximity effect which are designed to enhance vocals make it less than ideal for instruments), and of course the stand mic requires the guitarist to maintain a constant distance between the instrument and the mic (posture issues). The under saddle transducer produces a distinctive electro-acoustic sound. This is because it feels the structural vibrations of the instrument rather than hearing the sound waves transmitted through the air, as our ears do. Extensive eq correction is often required in order to produce an acceptable sound and even then it is not a true acoustic sound.

Microvox offers a solution to many problems of reproducing a true acoustic sound. The system consists of a dedicated power supply (NB it is not a preamp) and a miniature flat response condenser mic. The mic element is housed in a small black aluminium block and faces down onto the instrument. It attaches to the instrument by means of a Velcro pad. This method of fixing isolates the mic from unwanted structural vibration and ensures the mic is a fixed and constant distance from the sound source.
Any pickup device is the first link in the amplification chain. Microvox system mics ensure that this first crucial link is as faithful to the true sound as possible. Members of HJGS will receive a 10% discount on all Microvox products from Westfield Music in Wakefield. Contact details: -
