Lindsay Allyson 12 November 2013 Anthropology 1101 The Human Responsibility Research is, and always will be,

the funding principle that drives the human population forward. Without research there cannot be new discoveries, new inventions, or new ideas. That being said, research should come with a set of regulations to ensure that we keep the greater theme in mind- the needs of all forms of life. When conducting research one will always come in contact with something living, as a community we need to remember that what will do will ultimately affect something around us. Researching is what makes us grow as a human population however there should be limits on how much freedom researchers have. They should always be respectful of cultures and rituals of every type of culture. They should be making sure they are meeting the rights of their subject- the consent and knowledge of any and all participants in a case study. Subjects should be knowledgeable about how researching will affect their minds and bodies. Researchers should be making sure that everything they do to a certain subject is consensual and never without the informed consent of the subjects such as in the Guatemalan Syphilis Experiment. If research is harming subjects then the findings are almost invaluable because someone was wronged in the process. In order to prevent abuse of research subjects we have to keep in mind what the goal of research really is. As stated in the Institutional Review Boards list of regulations, Informed consent will be sought from each prospective subject and Informed consent will be appropriately documented. I think this basic principle should be the foundation of all research procedures in order to make sure the information we are obtaining is done so willingly. However, I do think that consent isnt always necessary- especially when identities are kept anonymous. Obviously, if anonymity is promised and then not given then there is a problem but, if the subject is consenting to anonymity then I see no problem with lack of legalized consent. While researcher responsibility plays a large role in this process, subject responsibility also plays a part. Subjects should be held accountable for knowing their rights and making sure they are met. They should never go through an experiment if they know it has not been explained to them or if it hasnt been explained to the fullest extent so that they are comfortable with what is taking place. The researcher should also be taking necessary measures to make sure all subjects are fully aware about what is taking place. This is especially important when dealing with people of different languages, cultures, and/or customs. What is the norm in one place may be a taboo in another. Researcher/subject responsibility is extremely important during the researching process. Both parties are to make sure all needs are met to ensure that the researching process goes smoothly and all information collected in viable. I agree that the IRB should be enforcing a set of regulations for researching because the goal of research is to further empower the minds of the human race- not to create problems between parties through non-consensual or disrespectful practices.
