Stephen Sears World religion presentation The article talks about how in Afghanistan officials are making Stoning

adulterers legal. "We are working on the draft of a sharia penal code where the punishment for adultery, if there are four eyewitnesses, is stoning," said Rohullah Qarizada, who is part of the sharia Islamic law committee. During the Taliban rule between 1999 and 2001 people were regularly stoned and executed in public usually on Fridays Women were not permitted to go out on their own, girls were barred from schools and men were obliged to grow long beards. After the fall of the Taliban people have invested millions of dollars in human rights for Afghanistan, especially for Womens rights. Those investors are horrified as the progress theyve been making seems to be deteriorating right in front of their eyes. This weekend two young lovers were publicly executed by a firing squad. The young couple was running from the law when they crashed their car. The public wanted them Stoned right there but the police decided to wait. The next day the young womens father ordered the execution on his daughter and her lover and they were executed that afternoon. This message is meant to inform us about what is going on in Afghanistan in an attempt to get us motivated to do something about it. Womens right in Afghanistan are a huge ethical issue and is definitely something that is worthy to do something about. I almost feel that this article also has a hidden message, getting us to justify our troops being in Afghanistan. The author is neither objective nor supportive but takes a neutral stance simply just informative. The intended audience is any adult around the world that has any ethical stance about womens, and human rights. In my opinion this is a horrible thing that Stoning is becoming a law in Afghanistan, Although you have to have four eyewitnesses and their stories all have to match I still feel that executing someone for something other than taking someone elses life is something that is morally wrong in this day and age. I

do agree with the people who have invested so much time and money trying to Fix the afghan government and think that an outside pressure on the government could push them In the right direction when it comes to such issues. The way this connects to what weve learned in class is that religions typically have had a huge impact on the government around the area. In Afghanistan they are bringing back the law which was practiced in the old testament of the bible. Obviously Religion has a huge impact in the laws and customs in Afghanistan and it doesnt look like it is going to be changed, especially if it is that closely connected with their religion. In some cultures Religion is government.
