Above, Mike Murphy proudly displays the basketball ornament he received last year. When giving ornaments to friends and family, select an ornament that has a special meaning to the recipient. Giving joke gifts at the holidays may seem to be a silly tradition, but it's one that my family has had more smiles and laughs about than you can imagine. My husband Lou Brown, at right, doesn't like to use chopsticks because he has a difficult time using them. A couple years ago, one of our daughters gave him a chopstick-aid. The idea is to spend very little money, but lots of imagination.

family and they are the hallmark of our holiday celebrations. Jennifer Baker grew up in a family with a Jewish father and Mexican heritage from her mothers side. For Jewish tradition, we light

the menorah and make potato pancakes for Chanukah. For Hispanic tradition, we make an obscene amount of tamales, Baker said. Both cultures are very surrounded by food so that is how holidays are defined for us. Food is often the center of many traditions, but for Linda Dansby, one activity always sig-

nified Christmas. Her entire life, Dansby has enjoyed doing puzzles. Each Christmas Eve, her father would get a new puzzle between 350 and 500 pieces for the family to do. Dansby said that it was always something he enjoyed doing on Christmas Day and the family completed the puzzle in a couple of days.

When I was a kid, my grandmother would make all the grandchildren new pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve. To this day, one of my daughters favorite parts about the holidays is being able to open those new pajamas. Although my daughters are now young adults and our family has grown with the recent addition of my new son-in-law, their favorite childhood traditions are still alive and well. In addition to the pajamas, they each receive a new ornament. This was another tradition that my grandmother started for all her grandchildren. By the time my husband and I got married, I already had a full tree of ornaments and this has also been the case with our girls. The third of the three gifts that were allowed to open on Christmas Eve (because we wait to open the rest of our gifts on Christmas morning) is the much anticipated joke

gift. Yes, this is an unusual tradition and one that Ive never heard of another family doing. A month or so before Christmas, we exchange names. For the person we draw, we purchase a joke gift for them that represents something that happened during the year or that just relates to them. This was started in my mothers family and a

tradition that would make our holidays complete. Some of the gifts are sillier than others but they always make us smile, laugh and talk about why that particular gift was perfect for the recipient. Maybe this list will give you some new ideas for your family or youll just stick with your tried and true traditions. I want to take a minute to thank you for always taking the time to read Inside Lincoln, and on behalf of myself and all the The Lincoln News Messenger staff, we want to wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with love and laughter with your friends and family. See you next year!

Downtown Lincoln is always decked out for the holiday festivities. In addition to regular shopping hours, Miracle on 5th Street on Dec. 7 will have many downtown shops and restaurants open. At right, six-year-old Adriana Bell takes a break with her family during the holiday season at Whistle Stop Cafe.

The holiday season has arrived! If you took your queue from the larger chain stores, it actually arrived several months ago. We have been inundated with television, radio and web-based ads to get us into the spirit. I told someone last week that it's difficult to get excited about holiday shopping when weve been seeing the ads and watching Christmas trees go up in the stores for the last three months. I do get excited about holiday shopping for being able to patronize our local businesses. The

difference between shopping with our local merchants and taking your shopping out to another town is that not only do our downtown businesses offer unique gifts, the holiday spirit truly comes across when dealing with local business owners. Whether it's looking for a gift for a coworker or purchasing something for a family member, Lincoln business owners can offer you something unique that most other stores cant, which is the small hometown service that comes from a town like Lincoln. 3) Service with a smile and more - I repeatedly hear about

living in Lincoln that everyone is so friendly. I love walking into a small store or restaurant and having the proprietor and staff know me by name and sometimes know what Im looking for to purchase or eat. Being a Bay Area transplant, over the last 12 years, I have made a lot of friends who own businesses downtown. Every time I walk into one of those businesses, I feel like Im welcomed as if I were one of their family members.

The cost of fuel, wear and tear on your car, having to stop for something to eat because youve spent several hours running in and out of stores, not to mention what your time is worth, are all going to make that item less of a deal than you originally thought. HANDMADE TREE
YOU WILL NEED
Green, red, brown and any other color you would like to add to your creation. Paper, plate, tile or another surface you would like to use as the background. Paintbrushes - at least one with a very thin brush tip and a bigger one for painting the feet. Frame or plate stand to show off your masterpiece.

My daughters are grown and the days of handmade projects from school are all but a distant memory. Some of the items they created have survived many Christmas holidays as the items have been removed from the box where theyre lovingly stored year after year. I treasure each gift the girls have made my husband and me. I am always a little sad when I have to retire something because it broke beyond repair one too many times. With so many restrictions that have been put on the schools and teachers, holiday projects are not always something that can be created these days. But every child should feel that joy of making something special for a friend or family member and each parent should be able to look in their childs eyes to see the pure love with which the gift was created. I remember being so excited as a child to give a handmade gift to my parents that I could hardly avoid giving them the gift early. Here are some projects you can make with your child. In years to come, when they are 6 inches taller than you, these treasures will remind you of how they were once so small. Its little mementoes like these that help preserve your kids childhoods and remind us that life is all too fleeting.

Paint one hand green and press down, beginning at palm, and moving toward fingers (be sure to have fingers pointed up). Repeat with other hand and alternate until the bottom row of the tree branches is completed (this will be determined by the size of your childs hand). Move up the tree until all rows of branches are complete. Paint on the tree trunk When hand prints are dry, add ornaments and embellishments. Frame your project after youve written their name and date on it.

Your child will need some assistance with the beginning steps of the handmade Christmas tree but your older child can take over from there. Four-year-old Sam Whitten was able to add his own embellishments to the Christmas craft that he made and was ready to move on to his next project.

MISTLE TOES

SNOWMAN ORNAMENT

Here's a fun way to chronicle the size of your kids hands year after year. You could even take one finger from each person in your family to make the snowmen.
YOU WILL NEED
ornament paper plate white, orange and black acrylic paint (other colors if you would like to add other embellishments such as hats and scarves)

Mistle toes can be framed if created on a piece of paper or you can put them on a tile or ceramic plate. Regardless of how you choose to display your creation, it adds a personal touch to your holiday season and one that will make you smile when your childs foot is larger than yours!

Paint one foot green and press down with the heel in the center of the surface, followed by the toes. Repeat with the other foot. After it is completely dry, paint a bow at the top of the footprints. With other colors, you can add stars, lights, bells or anything else to embellish the creation. Frame your project and enjoy for years to come.

Select your favorite ornament. For this one, I took a clear ornament and spray painted it green. After putting some white acrylic paint on a paper plate, dip your childs hand and dab off excess paint. Carefully position their hand where you would like the finger snowmen to be placed. Once the snowmen are dry, paint on coal buttons, eyes and mouth, as well as carrot nose. Dont forget to write their name and the date on the ornament. If this is your childs first Christmas, this would be a fun project to do every year so that you can see how the snowmen grow year after year.

Bake cookies to bring the holiday spirit to your house

BY DEBBIE BROWN
INSIDE LINCOLN

CHEWY NOELS
YOU WILL NEED
2 tablespoons butter 1 cup packed brown sugar 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon baking soda 2 beaten eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped walnuts/nut of your choice (or omit them altogether) 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting

ith cookie exchanges being a staple of the holiday season, I wanted to take the opportunity to share a couple of recipes that are a staple in my house. One of them has been in the family for generations and is always part of the holiday cookie repertoire and the other is one that I havent made long but friends cant get enough of. Chewy Noels are something that my grandmother made every year. My grandmother lived with us during most of my childhood so we would watch her make dozens and dozens of cookies and then freeze them. Although she started baking in November, and she thought she'd make plenty for the holiday season, her four grandkids would always find their way to the cookies and deplete

her supply, thereby causing even more work for her. Im sure we thought it was funny at the time, but now that Im an adult, I can only imagine how much extra work we created for her. At one point, my parents decided they needed a larger freezer, and much to my grandmothers delight, they purchased one with a lock on it. I do remember, however, that she never was able to hide the key without one of us finding it so I think grandma gave up and just realized she needed to continue baking those cookies. I cant make, or eat, a Chewy Noel without thinking of Grandma Wanda and all the years I watched her bake them. The recipe calls for walnuts, but if you're allergic to them like I am, you can substitute another nut or even leave the nuts out altogether.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter in a square baking dish. Tilt the dish to coat all sides. Grandma found that putting it in the refrigerator to let the butter harden a bit helped keep the cookies from sticking. In a medium bowl, stir together the brown sugar, flour and baking soda. Mix in the eggs and vanilla. Then stir in the walnuts. Pour over the melted butter but do not stir. Bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Cool, cut into squares, then dust with powdered sugar.

This is a recipe that I often make throughout the year but its great at holiday time, as well. The bananas add a freshness to some of the heavier items we consume at the holidays and they can also be changed up for a holiday flair. Although it calls for a chocolate drizzle, I sometimes dip them in chocolate and Ive thought about using colored white chocolate to make them even more festive. The great aspect about this cookie is that its a no-bake item. When your oven is full of other holiday sweets, you can make this one on the side. By substituting the cream cheese for peanut butter and the vanilla wafers for graham crackers, you can create a very different version of this cookie.

COOKIE BALLS

Chocolate, banana and cookies make these Christmas Balls delicious! I actually make these all year, but by the addition of some colored white chocolate, you could make these festive for the holidays. Feel free to substitute peanut butter for the cream cheese and graham crackers for the cookies.
YOU WILL NEED
1 package (8 ounces) softened cream cheese 60 vanilla wafers (approximately 1 box) 1/3 cup mashed ripe bananas 6 ounces melted white chocolate 1/3 cup finely chopped pecans (or your nut of choice) 2 ounces melted semi-sweet chocolate

Mix cream cheese, cookie crumbs and bananas. Shape into 1-inch balls and dip them into melted white chocolate. Place on a wax paper-lined pan and then sprinkle with nuts and drizzle with melted chocolate. Refrigerate 1 hour (or until firm).

Eisley Nursery in Auburn has more than a dozen types of pointsettias this year.
They cant be outdoors overnight in our climate, Davis said. (They need) just a bright location, not next to heat or a vent or open door so they dont get too warm or too cold. Smaller pots require watering every two to three days larger containers less often. Let them dry out between waterings because they dont want to be soggy, she said. (The nurserys) watering system has a mild fertilizer in it. So when you get (the plant) home, you dont have to worry about that. If they are in a good location, poinsettias can last six or eight weeks. Ive had some at my house last into the third month, Davis said. They start looking a little scruffy but still have colorful bracts. And if you really dont want to part with it, you can keep your poinsettia

beyond that. After the season, once it starts losing the bracts, then you would start feeding it regular houseplant fertilizer and just enjoy it as a green houseplant Davis said. During warm weather, they can be outside in a morning-sun,

The most common mistakes are over watering or under watering. The plants also need careful handling they are very brittle so they break easily. They are intolerant of weather, Davis said. If you take them out in the rain, it will spot the bracts. Because they are brittle, the wind can damage the branches. When choosing poinsettias, make sure the little flowers in the center are not open yet or just starting to open. When they are fully open, it is a sign the plant is older and will have less table or shelf life to it, she explained. At Avantgarden in Downtown Auburn, owner Kim Wright said she uses a lot of poinsettias in decorating her home for Christmas. To add color to her large potted plants, she puts a row of 4-inch containers of poinsettias around the inside edge. So all you can see is the foliage, she said. Theyre also great for a table. Put poinsettias in a basket and stick in some pots of ivy for a nice low centerpiece, she said. Or use the flowers to brighten the entryway larger poinsettias will create more wow factor. Put them on the floor, inside, beside the front door, Wright said. It makes the whole entryway look festive,

ASK THE MASTER GARDENER

Be aware of the impact of frost, freeze and chill on plants

BY TRISH GRENFELL
PLACER COUNTY MASTER GARDENER

Question: What is the difference between a frost and a freeze and how does each affect plants? Answer: To answer your very astute question about the affect of cold on growing plants, I must add a third category: a chill, which can damage some plants by injuring their parts with temperatures above the freezing point. If you purchased the plant, it is likely that you received information giving you the lowest temperature the plant could sustain without injury. Plants of tropical or subtropical origin are most susceptible. Chillinginjured leaves may become purple or reddish and in some cases wilt. Both flowers and fruit of sensitive species can be injured.

In defining a freeze vs. a frost, I think it is important to know how the National Weather Service uses those terms. When your local meteorologist issues an advisory in spring or fall, this is what he/she is means: 1) Frost is when the temperature of the Earths surface falls below 32 degrees causing the formation of thin ice crystals that can cover the ground and other cold surfaces. 2) Freeze is when the temperature is expected to remain under 32 degrees for an extended period of time. These terms are important to know because both can drastically affect growth. Since a frost alone is temporary, all you may need to do is protect tender plants by covering them or bringing them indoors the night before a frost is predicted. You can then uncover them once

the temperature climbs back up during the day. A freeze, meanwhile, generally spells the end of the growing season for tender plants. For more information on how frost and freezes actually injure the plants (using slightly different

definitions of the terms), please read pages 133 to 138 in Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Plants: a Diagnostic Guide. (UC Publication 3420). Have gardening questions? Call the Master Gardener hotline at (530) 889-7388.

Good vets go above and beyond

ecently, a 20/20 television episode promoted its dirty little secrets investigations, attempting to expose the underbelly of different professions, including veterinarians. The gentleman veterinarian interviewed for this segment confessed to routinely selling unneeded services and diagnostic tests to unsuspecting clients, playing on their emotional attachment, claiming that it was a fairly common practice. Friends and colleagues in the profession found his revelation to be particularly offensive. When the background of this gentleman was reviewed, it turns out that he had lost his veterinary license and was no longer in private practice. Is this a gentleman with some sort of ax to grind? Or is this a

A good veterinarian will care for your pet almost as much as you do and will do what it takes to ensure that he or she is healthy, even if that means doing some extra work like giving them baths or cleaning their teeth, using sharp and painless needles, explaining things to you and saving you money.
ins that our us time must be spent completing diagnostics, medical records, checking on patients, returning phone calls, emergency surgeries the list goes on. The occasion we get off work on time is so rare, its cause for celebration. Vets almost ALWAYS stay late for clients and their pets.
