us/~kcarlton 2010-11 School Year Course Overview: Exploring World Languages is a course that provides a sampling of world languages and cultures for students who have not had a prior opportunity for world language learning. This class in particular will focus on the German language. Typical objectives of this course include development of basic linguistic and cultural awareness, learning basic words and phrases in world languages, development of listening skills, and development of an interest in world languages for future study. Exploring World Languages DOES NOT lead to the development of communicative proficiency in a world language. Behavior Expectations: In addition to the GROUND RULES we establish as a class, the following are expected of all students at all times. Students are expected to respect themselves, the teacher, and others. This includes: 1. following directions the first time they are given 2. speaking appropriately and respectfully to all 3. respecting property 4. keeping hands, feet, and materials to oneself 5. bringing all required materials to class 6. sitting in ones assigned seat before the bell rings Grading Scale/Grading Policy: The official grading scale and grading policies of Clarksville Middle School will be followed in this class. Absence/Make-up Policy: 1. You have one class day for every day you are absent to make up your work. 2. You must schedule make-up quizzes before or after school. 3. Check the ABSENT STUDENT files for any worksheets or notes that you missed while absent. 4. Completing and handing in make-up work is your responsibility. I will not remind you. Restroom/Hall Passes: Students are expected to use the restroom during the passing period. Should an emergency arise, hall passes will be issued. Please note that these should be very infrequent and limited to only the most dire emergency. Passes to the water fountain or lockers will NOT be issued - please do not ask! Notebook Grade: 1. You must have a 3-ring binder for this class. It can be BLACK, RED, or YELLOW, 2 size rings or larger. BE SURE TO GET ONE WITH A PLASTIC COVER if you have not gotten one already! 2. You must have the following in your binder: a. Paper (college or wide-rule / notebook or loose leaf) b. Section dividers i. JOURNAL ENTRIES ii. VOCABULARY

iii. CULTURE iv. MISC. c. THIS HANDOUT! Other Materials: You need the following items EVERY DAY in this class. If you have any problems obtaining these items, please see me. blue or black pens binder 3x5 index cards, 1 package minimum, lined or unlined, any color pencil paper anything else the teacher requests

Plagiarism/Cheating Policy: It is against school rules to cheat on school assignments or tests or to plagiarize. This includes copying information from the Internet. On the first offense of cheating/plagiarism, you will receive a failing grade on the assignment and/or test and will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action. Further offenses will result in a failing grade for the course. Tardies 1-3 tardies: warning, documentation, parent informed 4+ tardies: referral to office for disciplinary action
