Assignment 1 Investigating Human Resources Planning and Development
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to provide a framework within which the
learner can:

Investigate how the strategic management of human resources contributes to
the achievement of organisational objectives
Develop human resource plans for an organisation
Investigate human resources policy requirements in an organisation
Examine human resources management in an organisation

Scenario

You work as an HR specialist for a business consultancy firm which provides
services for both public and private sector organisations. A new client has
approached your company for advice on implementing an HRM approach to
improve organisational effectiveness.

You have been asked to provide background information on the HR function and
how planning and development methods contribute to meeting organisational
objectives and requirements. To illustrate this, you should adopt a case study
approach using investigations from your organisation, or an organisation you can
research and are familiar with.

Task 1

Prepare a powerpoint presentation which examines the contribution of HRM to the
achievement of organisational objectives. Your presentation should take no more than
15-20 minutes, and you should include copies of slides used, handouts, presenter
notes etc as your evidence. Make sure you :

a) explain the importance of strategic human resource management in
organisations and assess the purpose of strategic HRM in an organisation.
b) evaluate the contribution of strategic HRM to achieving the organisations
objectives.

Task 2

The client has asked about different HR planning and development methods and how
these contribute to meeting the objectives of the organisation. In no more than 1,500
words prepare a handout which:

paper for the client. Include the following information:

b) analyse the impact of an organisational structure and also of an organisational
culture on the management of HR
c) examine how the effectiveness of HRM is monitored in an organisation.
d) make recommendations and justify them to improve the effectiveness of HRM in
an organisation.
