September 30, 2013 Rachelle Reisberg Assistant Dean of Engineering Northeastern University 617-373-3402 r.reisberg@neu.edu RE: GE 1000 Reference Document

Dear Professor Reisberg, As your former student in GE1000- Introduction to Engineering, I have created a short reference document that I feel would be beneficial for current freshman students currently enrolled in GE1000. As the Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering, I was hoping you could get these informational notices distributed among the GE1000 classes. As an engineering peer mentor for the GE1000 class, I have noticed many students are unaware of what each of the engineering disciplines consist. As a result, I have created this informative guide on each of the engineering disciplines available here at Northeastern University. The distribution of this information will help freshman students decide among the majors in the College of Engineering. Additionally, the students will be able to make an informed decision and get a sneak peek into what life will typically consist of after graduating with an engineering degree. This information can help save students the time and turmoil of needing to switch majors longer down the line. Thank you for your time and consideration of utilizing this new resource. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to reach me.

Best Regards, Crystal Oseagulu

Chemical Engineering Description: Chemical engineers research and manufacture various materials such as fuels, plastics, semiconductors, etc. Chemical engineers design processes and products that lead to efficiency while reducing costs and improving quality while maintaining safety. chemical engineers also create processes or products that can create more sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Starting Salary: $66,400

Computer Engineering Description: Computer engineers design, construct, implement, and maintin computers and computer equipment. This field is a fusion of both electrical engineering and computer science. One can expect to edit existing software, perform quality assurance testing, and debugging programs. Additionally, computer engineers can expect an integration of their computer code and hardware systems in the workplace. Starting Salary: $70,400

Electrical Engineering Description: Electrical engineers can get jobs involved in the power industry, computer networks, wireless communications, or even medical imaging. Additionally, they develop, test, and oversee electrical equipment. Some examples of things electrical engineers develop and improve include radars, microprocessors, circuitry, etc. As an electrical engineer, a strong understanding of physics and mathematics is essential. Starting Salary: $62,300

Mechanical Engineering Description: Mechanical engineering involves designing, developing, and manufacturing equipment that can complete a task efficiently. This is a relatively broad field of study and mechanical engineers can work in power, environment, healthcare, etc. Mechanical engineers include testing devices seen in combustion engines, power plants, etc. Mechanical engineers must plan out parts of a machine to go together as a whole. This can be often done by using 3D CAD software such as Solidworks. Starting Salary: $62,900

Industrial Engineering Description: industrial engineering involves choosing the best way to make people, machines, and materials efficient. Industrial engineers organize and develop plans to create an efficient working environment. Industrial engineers can find jobs in many different fields including healthcare, communications, consulting, or manufacturing. This major incorporates math and statistics with principles of economics and business in order to achieve a productive and efficient environment. Starting Salary: 58,2330

Civil Engineering Description: Civil engineering involves overseeing the construction of buildings and infrastructure. This includes developing plans for efficient highways, skyscrapers, railways, bridged, etc. Additionally, civil engineering takes into account sewage systems tunnel systems, etc. One can see that there are many different things that one can help analyze and maintain when it comes to civil engineering. The improvement of these various constructions contributes to a better living for humans and other organisms. Starting Salary: 57,600
