Newman English 101: Rhetoric 16 September 2013 Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography Bullying in the workplace has affected more than half of working citizens. Staff members typically ignore put downs and harsh criticism because they see this abuse as managers trying to perfect the company. Victims of verbal abuse do not realize that harassment in the workplace is unacceptable. More often than not employees feel that they cannot discuss their situation with a supervisor. Businesses should have a safe and reliable outlet for employees to go to if they feel threatened or need to report an incident. This essay will explore different types of harassment and the consequences companies may face if they do not resolve tension in the workplace. While many employees complain about put downs and harsh criticism, most are afraid to report this behavior to their managers. I will examine the importance of having an administrator that staff can trust and open up to. Further, I will discuss the types of harassment that all employees should be aware about and the actions to take if you suspect workplace harassment. In addition to discussing the different types of abuse, I will inspect the consequences companies will face if they do not resolve this conflict. This selected bibliography includes sources that will address the affect of workplace harassment on employees, how to recognize a bully, and consequences companies may face if this issue is not resolved. The Cable and Allenspach essays will explore the psychological issues employees may have as a result of having high stress levels. The Teresa essay will show the signs of a tough boss and how to handle this type of manager. Lastly, the Kadleck and Ramsey essay will explain employees need a person they can go and talk to and if companies fail to resolve harassment at work they can face lawsuits.

Annotated Bibliography

Crain's Cleveland Business. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. The author states that workplace bullying including rude comments and criticism inflicts more harm on employees than sexual harassment. Government officials refuse to look deeper in many harassment cases because they fear that soon every working person will try and sue their place of employment the second their feelings are hurt. Kadleck later argues that the government should take every case seriously, especially since only three percent of those bullied file lawsuits.

HR Magazine. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. Teresa cites many surveys stating that over half of human resource employees had witnessed abusive or intimidating behavior by a manager. The author then goes on to say that many employees do not know the difference between harassment and a "tough boss". In fact, many of those interviewed made comments suggesting that employees believe their manager is being "tough" as a way to better the company.

Occupational Hazards. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. Cable explains that workplace bullying has resulted in physical and psychological issues caused by stress. Many employees quit their jobs to avoid the harsh remarks and actions of fellow workers. The author stresses that employers need to take

this issue seriously because more than half of their skilled workers are leaving due to a conflict that could have been prevented or resolved.

St. Cloud Times; St. Cloud, Minn. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. Harassment in the workplace has led to millions of dollars lost in claims, billions lost in productivity, and even death. Allenspach writes that about 15% of workplace homicides and suicides were because of harassment at work. The author goes on to say that employees must be trained to stay calm and get help if another employee shows signs of physical violence.

Supervision. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. Ramsey claims that bullying in the workplace can jeopardize teamwork and productivity. The bully may use verbal abuse, teasing, put-downs, and more as ways of hurting another employee. The best thing to do is stand up to the bully; if that doesn't work, then go to your manager.
