Laurel McCall Professor Alicia Bolton ENG 101 November 4, 2013 Annotated Bibliography: Steven Caseys ZZZs in Zeebrugge There have been several ship disasters over the course of our century due to the negligence of a crew member that could have been avoided. In the case of the vessel, Herald of Free Enterprise however, the situation wasnt avoided. Everything seemed to be in order as the captain called for deportation. The ship set sail from Zeebrugge attempting to make it across the English channel. It wasnt until later that they realized the lower bow doors had not been shut. Sometimes a ship could operate normally with the bow doors open and not sink, but when the captain ordered for 22 knots of speed the bow waves grew large enough to enter the ship and cause it to sink in only 30 feet of water. This simple mistake was the cause of 188 lives being lost. If the captain had simply checked up the doors himself or the man in charge of checking them hadnt been sleeping, maybe it wouldnt have happened. Of course nowadays, most vessels are equipped with better software and other technology to prevent something like this from occurring. Even the best of technology cant prevent human error though, so through my research paper I plan to inform the public on how tragedies like this could be prevented with proper attention and dedication to the job. My research paper will reflect this bibliography, which is the origin of my research paper.

Burnham, John C. Accident Prone: A History of Technology, Psychology, and Misfits of the Machine Age. London, 2009. eBook collection (EBSCO Host). EBSCO. Web. 3 Nov. 2013. This book goes into detail about accidents which have taken place over the years in not only technology but in the work place in general. There are several stories and accounts of tragedies which are later learned could have been prevented if only the proper management and safety regulations were in order. There is actually a full chapter on how transport operators should perform with the upmost responsibility. But there were other criteria such as smooth and efficient starting and stopping, or courteous and thoughtful treatment of passengers, and of course following the rules, dressing neatly and taking instructions. These are all aspects that can make or break a crew. The chapter goes on to reveal even more ways of ensuring a safe transport and labor legislation laws that have helped along the way. The author of this eBook has gone through much research and effort in writing this book. While serving as a scholar and resident at the Medical Heritage Center, he researched and wrote this detailed collection with the help of professors and scientists alike. They used all of their intellectual ideas and put them together with facts and examples which backed up their findings. Since I am writing about the ways that the tragedy on the Herald could have been avoided this eBook serves as a perfect source. There are several provoking insights on ways the crew of any kind of transport should handle their business. By that I mean, taking care of the transport itself and the lives of the people that are involved as well. Hopefully by using this source I will be able to give the readers a good idea of the situation on the Herald could have been handled differently and how other transports dont have to make the same mistake.

Gregg, Jill A. The Titanic. St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture vol. 4. (2000): 661-663. Gale Virtual Reference Library. Web. 04 November 2013. This article tells the great tale of the sinking of the Titanic and some of the craze behind it. Not only does it talk about the pop culture that has seemed to branch off from the accident but the tragedy that still haunts some to this day. Gregg talks about the changes that have been made since 1912 that have helped boats to prevent something like this from happening again. The tragedy also spawned increased efforts to launch rescue operations for those involved in water accidents. In hope of averting a repeat of the event, the International Ice Patrol was founded by the nations of the North Atlantic. They also made a law that required every person on board to have a seat in a lifeboat. This source is credible for mainly one reason. This encyclopedia was developed by people who have studied and researched some of these topics their entire life. Jill Gregg who attended Portland University is just one of the many authors of this collection of works. In her article she stated several facts and examples which backed up her writing. In my research paper I plan to use the information Ive learned from this article to show the changes that have been made to ships due to accidents like this. I want to explore and explain the changes that could be made to boats after what happened to the Herald to prevent something like this from occurring again, like light indicators in the captains quarter that show the position of all doors on the ship and if it is indeed ready to set sail.

This website basically is just a list of all the laws that stand in place for the construction of ships in Canada. These laws are very similar to the ones we use in America. There is everything from how thick the hull must be to the requirements for watertight compartments and light indicators that signal if there is a danger of the ship perishing. There shall be at least two sources of power for opening and closing all such doors simultaneously. The laws go on and on but all are very beneficial to building a safe ship. I have found this source to be very credible seeing as though it was published by the Government of Canada themselves. These are their laws that are written to be legally followed in order to ensure a strong ship and the safety of the passengers that choose to be on it. Its obvious that these laws should be taken seriously especially coming from the government. In my research paper I plan to bring some of these laws that I have found within these regulations and bring them in the light to show how the Herald could have been saved if their ship was made to the standards of the Canadian government. The light indicators for example on the doors was a huge factor in the sinking of this ship and going back I believe even the captain would agree with that.

Krieger, Gary R. Accident Prevention Manual For Business & Industry: Environmental Management. 2nd ed. US: National Safety Council, 2000. Print. This book is contains an incredible amount of legal and just plain, good principles that should be instilled into any good business. There are laws and just concepts alike that can help an organization perform to their fullest without possibility of negligence. They use this book to associate some of these risk assessments with good common sense. The development of formal, quantitative human health and ecological risk assessment represents a major advance in

environmental management techniques. If we just think about things and always keep worst case scenario in mind we can prevent chaos from taking place. This source appears to be credible as it was written by some of the greatest MDs and PhDs in our nation. Most of whom wrote this book are professionals in their areas of study and have been involved in development of many great businesses. They have used their minds to create the perfect manual. I plan to use this source as a valid argument in my research paper. Most of the information is about using risk management in your decision making and ensuring the safety of others. I will explain how some of these tips could have been useful in the situation of the Herald. If they may have practiced some of these skills, maybe this ship could have been saved from tragedy.

TEDTalks: Carl Safina-The Oil Spills Unseen Culprits and Victims. Gulf Spill:Gross Negligence. Films Media Group, 2010. Films On Demand. Web. 04 November 2013. <http://digital.films.com/PortalViewVideo.aspx?xtid=48536&psid=0&sid=0&State=&titl e=&IsSearch=Y&parentSeriesID=> This 20 minute video focuses on the people responsible for oil spills and the effects that it has had on its victims. Safina goes into detail about how the Gulf spill was no accident but the end result of our government not overseeing and regulating these oil rigs. That is unacceptable. If you see any evidence of the blowout preventer not functioning properly, you should fix it by whatever means possible. He explains that the government should have more take in the publics interests instead of just worrying about dollar signs and if there was someone who took charge of situations like this one, these types of accidents could be avoided.

I see this source as a very credible one. Safina has spent his entire life studying the ocean and knows the effect that an oil spill can have on the ecosystem. This also makes him biased on the situation when talking about the government, however, he quotes many congressman and government officials throughtout the video which also support his findings and statements. I plan to use this information to help me form my argument that there needs to be someone in charge when it comes to things like this. Whether you are transporting a dangerous substance or just a bunch of cargo you should be doing everything in your power not to just make sure the product is safe but the lives and the well-being of everything around in is protected as well.
