2012- 2013 ExhIbITS, EVENTS, NEW COllECTION HIghlIghTS LEE ANDERSON aND EVaN ANDERSON BRaUDE GallERY DEDICaTED

During the Parkers birthday party, copresident Evan Anderson Braude announced that his mother, Lee Anderson, had chosen the HSLB to receive a $100,000 legacy gift. The generous gift is the first to the newly formed HSLB Legacy Guild. Evan added that his mothers gift was particularly poignant as she was terminally ill. Mrs. Anderson passed away on September 24, 2012. Lee Anderson was the wife of Glenn Anderson who served as a state assemblyman, Lt. Governor of California, and represented Long Beach in Congress. Lee Anderson had a long and impressive list of accomplishments. As a young woman, she was a member of the Navys unit, WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). Lee was a Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner, a board member of what became the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center and of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera. She also formed the Glenn and Lee Anderson Foundation which awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving students. The board of the HSLB wanted to honor her legacy gift and Evans substantive contributions on behalf of the organization by naming the south gallery the Lee Anderson and Evan Anderson Braude Gallery. The sign was unveiled and the gallery dedicated at the HSLB annual meeting on May 8, 2013.

LGBT HISTORY PROJECT

In July 2012, the HSLB brought together a group of LGBT community leaders and HSLB staff and volunteers to collaborate on the LGBT History Project. The effort included research of local and national events and legislation related to LGBT history. Materials were collected from local organizations including The Center, Imperial Court, Lambda Democratic Club and Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, as well as from individuals and businesses. Oral histories were collected from nine individuals active in the LGBT community. From the research and interviews, a timeline was created. Photos, banners, programs and ads that illustrated events from the timeline were hung on the walls and placed in display cases. Quotes from the oral histories illuminate and enrich the exhibit. On February 23, 200 guests attended a preview gala that included presentations by Melissa Etheridge (pictured on cover), Mayor Foster, Congressman Alan Lowenthal, state Assembly Member Bonnie Lowenthal and several members of the city council. The project showed us that there is much more to discover about LGBT history in Long Beach. We hope those who come to view the exhibit will add to the knowledge and materials we have collected. An archive has been established; materials collected will be catalogued for use by researchers, historians, and others who want to learn about the struggles and contributions of the citys LGBT community.

LONG BEACH DAY NURSERY EXHIBIT

We were pleased to partner with the Long Beach Day Nursery during 2012, their centennial anniversary. Visitors to the gallery enjoyed the photos, toys and insights shared by those who attended and helped the LBDN serve the citys families.

17 Th ANNUAL HISTORICAL CEMETERY TOUR

In 2012, we again welcomed several hundred guests to hear from those buried in the citys two oldest cemeteries. Each year our goal is to make the tour even better than the one before. Join us for our 18th tour on October 26, 2013.

HAPPY 50 Th ANNIVERSARY HSLB!

In 1962, local residents became concerned that the citys history would forever be lost without an organization formally tasked with collecting and preserving it. The Kiwanis Club took on the project and in May of 1962 the Articles of Incorporation were filed and the Historical Society of Long Beach was created. To celebrate our anniversary, Parkers Lighthouse graciously opened their Queensview Steakhouse to us for a fabulous birthday party attended by 100 supporters and friends of theHSLB. Guests enjoyed a raffle, superb food and fantastic view.
