CHINESE STYLE

HISTORY
Since the culture was born Now mostly used in Government buildings During the Tang Dynasty Chinese Architecture influenced many other countries in their architectural styles Largely unchanged throughout the years

BALANCE
Symmetry Main structure is the axis and other structures are to the sides of the main structure Any expansions to the building or house must follow the pattern and must always be in even numbers Most of the time there will always be an even number of columns supporting each structure The main entrance is at the center and front of the house.

ENCLOSURE
2 different types of enclosures: Courtyards and Skywells Siheyuan is a type of courtyard where there structure makes a square with an open space in the center Sometimes called the Chinese Quadrangle Most common in Beijing Sky wells are when the buildings are close together and theres a small open section on the top letting in the sun light Serve to collect water from rooftops when it rains Both serve as temperature regulation and venting

SWEEPING ROOFS
Sweeping curvature that rises at the corners of the roof Usually for temples, palaces and some very wealthy people Ridges of the roof are usually very decorated

DOUGONG
Adds support to the heavy structure Used because they had lack of any glue or nails Allowed buildings to slide or flex during earthquakes without causing sever damage to the structure

ROOF APEX
Beam on top of the roof of any building Usually highly decorated with statues to weigh down the roof tiles for stability Decorated also for religious purposes Often extended or incorporated to original structure to serve as a fire deterrent for falling embers

FORBIDDEN CITY
Located in Beijing, China Served as the home of the emperor for 500 years Built from 1406-1420

S H E N YA N G I M P E R I A L PA L A C E
Former Palace of the Qin Dynasty Built in 1625 In 1955 it became the Shenyang Palace Museum In 2005 it was added as an extension to the forbidden city

B I G W I L D G O O S E PA G O D A
Built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty and originally was 5 stories high Main function was to hold figurines of Buddha Empress Wu Zetian had 5 stories added In the days of the Tan Dynasty scholars would carve their names on the structure
