Explore Our World: Thanksgiving Dinner

Collaboration:

Its important for students to communicate, negotiate and express themselves with other people. The best way for students to learn is to actually work in a group setting. Students will use this activity to reflect on how they can strengthen certain Learner Profile attributes and attitudes to make them a better team player.

Pre-assessment:

Students should have knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, percentage, and decimals. This may be determined through pre-assessment or the completion of the units above. The lesson may need to be differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. For example, I have one student that will use a calculator for her calculations as noted in her IEP.

Lesson:

Start off the lesson with a discussion of Thanksgiving. Ask students if they celebrate Thanksgiving, what it means to them, what are things they do, etc. Tell the students they will receive $60 to spend on Thanksgiving dinner. They must stay on budget and create a dinner to feed their group. They should also consider a balanced, healthy meal and use what we learned from our unit on the human body. Students should also be sensitive towards digestive intolerances and allergies. Thanksgiving dinner can also be tied to The First Thanksgiving. Connecting where some food choices originated from to Native Americans and Pilgrims. Provide sale fliers and computers for students to research prices for their shopping trip. They need to specify different stores and no restaurants may be used. This is

to be a home cooked meal (although it does not have to be a traditional Thanksgiving meal if they wanted to incorporate nontraditional traditions from students livesex. my mom always ate Kimchee with her stuffing and turkey). They may also use coupons and discount cards where applicable. Bring in some items to show size and discuss portion size and what is appropriate. For example one can of corn may not feed a whole family and four people do not need a 30 lb. turkey (even if the price is too good to resist). They must decide as a group what items will be present at their dinner. This is not lead by one person, they must work collaboratively to determine menu items. When students are done they are to create a display which includes ALL computation, pictures (drawn, clipart, clippings) of menu items and the balance. They MUST not exceed $60.

Teachers Role:

To provide materials and mathematical support. Collaboration may hit some bumps and groups may need assistance with negotiating and compromise. Teacher should tie in connections to math, social studies and science.

Learner Profile:

Communication: Students must effectively communicate ideas and listen to each other. Open-Minded: Students must consider the opinions and ideas of others Reflective: Students will reflect on their performance as a member of the group

Assessment: Optional:

Students will fill out a self-assessment and peer assessment.

If feeling adventurous an extension to this lesson could include a contest. You could take the menu from the team closest to budget and with the most accurate computation and purchase those items for a Thanksgiving meal for the class. Using parent volunteers you could set up stations where all students help prepare their class meal together.
