Apple Harvest
Wall Quilt

scraps for apples
52 assorted coordinating
scrap 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares
for borders
6" x 6" square each 4 different beige/brown prints
1/8 yard brown solid
1/8 yard burgundy floral
1/2 yard cream-on-cream print
Backing 32" x 32"
Batting 32" x 32"
All-purpose thread to match fabrics
Clear nylon monofilament
1 package brown wide bias tape
2 packages deep red wide bias tape
1/2 yard fusible transfer web
3/4 yard fabric stabilizer
Cream hand-quilting thread
Basic sewing tools and supplies, rotary cutter, mat and ruler
and water-erasable marker or pencil
Instructions
1. Cut one 2 1/2" by fabric width strip burgundy floral; subcut
into sixteen 2 1/2" square segments for A.
2. Cut each 6" x 6" square beige/brown print into two 2 1/2" x
2 1/2" squares for B and two 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" squares for C. Cut the
C squares on one diagonal to make four C triangles of each fabric.
3. Cut two 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" squares cream-on-cream print for D;
cut each D square in half on one diagonal to make four D
triangles.
4. Cut four squares brown solid 2 7/8" x 2 7/8"; cut each
square in half on one diagonal to make eight E triangles.
5. Prepare template for F using pattern given; cut as directed
on the piece.
6. Cut two 12 7/8" x 12 7/8" squares cream-on-cream print; cut
each square on one diagonal to make four G triangles.
7. Prepare templates for appliqu shapes using patterns given.
Trace shapes onto the paper side of the fusible transfer web as
directed on each piece for number to cut. Cut out shapes, leav-
ing a margin around each one.
8. Fuse leaf shapes to the wrong side of green print scraps, the
apple shapes to the wrong side of the burgundy print scraps
and the stem pieces to the wrong side of the brown solid. Cut
out shapes on traced lines;
remove paper backing.
9. Cut four 17 1/2" lengths
brown wide bias tape.
Measure in 3 3/8" from long
edge of both sides of G and
mark with a pin as shown in
Figure 1. Position one end of
a length of bias tape at one
pin and the opposite end at the other pin;
pin ends in place. Smooth out remainder
of bias tape to make a pleasing curve for
handle.
10. Unfold bias; stitch along fold crease
line. Refold bias; machine-stitch on open
side of bias tape using matching all-pur-
pose thread as shown in Figure 2. Repeat
on each G triangle.
11. Arrange three apple motifs
on G in numerical order, extend-
ing bottom parts of apples over
the bottom edge and overlapping
as desired referring to the block
drawing for positioning sugges-
tions; trim excess bottom part
of apple shapes even with G as
shown in Figure 3. Fuse in place.
Repeat for three apple/G units.
12. Cut a piece of fabric stabilizer to fit
behind the fused area on each apple/G
unit; pin in place.
13. Using clear nylon monofilament in the
top of the machine and all-purpose thread
in the bobbin, machine satin-stitch around
each fused shape. Set aside apple/G units.
14. To piece the bottom of the basket, sew
A to B to A and add C as shown in Figure
4. Repeat to make one B-A-C unit and one
A-C unit, again referring to Figure 4; press
seams in one direction.
15. Join the pieced units and add C as
shown in Figure 5; press seams in one
direction.
