Moon Phases Model

You will use this model to help you learn the moon phases and help you understand why you see the shapes that you do why you look into the sky. To look at each moon phase, you will stand in one position and turn the board counterclockwise to simulate the revolution of the moon around the Earth. FYI: Waxing phases mean that shape appears to be getting larger and waning means that the shape appears to be getting smaller. The moons orbit is actually tilted slightly. New moon: no moon is visible to Earth Full moon: A full half of the moon is visible to Earth Waxing Crescent: a sliver of moon appears present to Earth Waning Crescent: a sliver of moon appears present to Earth First Quarter: half of the half (1/4) of the moon appears present to Earth Third (Last) Quarter: half of the half (1/4) of the moon appears present to Earth Waxing Gibbous: About of the visible half appears present to Earth Waning Gibbous: About of the visible half appears present to Earth Stand in the model facing the sun. Use the phases listed above to write down what phase of the moon is present, as is directed. 1. Look at the moon that is before you. What moon phase is this?

2. Draw what this phase looks like to you (Earth).

3. What part of the moon is the sun light hitting? 4. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase is this?

5. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

6. Turn the board slightly to the next phase. What moon phase is this?

7. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

8. If you drew a line from the sun to the Earth and a line from the Earth to the moon, at what angle is this moon phase?

9. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase is this?

10. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

11. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase is this?

12. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

13. If you drew a line from the sun to the moon, what at what angle is this moon phase?

14. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase is this?

15. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

16. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase

is this?

17. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

18. Turn the board slightly counterclockwise to the next phase. What moon phase is this? 19. Draw what this phase looks like to you.

FYI: Lunar eclipses occur when the Earths shadow (umbra) blocks the moon from being seen. Solar eclipses occur when the moons shadow (umbra) blocks the sun from being seen. 20. Which moon phase could a lunar eclipse occur? Please explain.

21. Which moon phase could a solar eclipse occur? Please explain.

22. What are some limitations of this model?
