What a champ!
At a ceremony in the school hall that was bursting at the seams, an eight year student from St Bernards Parish Primary School in Bacchus Marsh was awarded the Prime Ministers medal. Cory won the prize after entering a competition about NAIDOC week despite the competition being aimed at those aged 12 and above. Corys story described the history of Aboriginal people. I entered the competition because Id learnt about my own aboriginal culture during NAIDOC week this year in Bacchus Marsh. I helped raise the ag outside the RSL, explained Cory. Cory was presented his medal last Thursday by Cr Tonia Dudzik, representing the mayor, and Executive Director of NAIDOC Dylan Williams. NAIDOC celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life and culture.

ITS BEEN A BAD WEDNESDAY for The Bacchus Marsh Good Friday Association. The multicultural group that co-ordinates an estimated 20,000 people at Bacchus Marshs Ta Pinu Shrine each Easter was denied a $2500 Council grant last week. It was the only applicant to miss out on grants in the latest round, and comes after suggestions by former Mayor Pat Toohey that churches, schools and emergency services should be ineligible to apply for Council Community Grants. On Good Friday 18,000 people attend a service at 11am as well as a 3pm pilgrimage (representing the time of Christs death) around a at area of the hilltop site. Caretaker Charlie Borg said although Ta Pinu was established by the Maltese Catholic community, many Indians attended services at 4am and some people stayed on until midnight boosting visitation beyond ofcial gures. It is bringing thousands of people to Bacchus Marsh each Easter, he said. I have even had phone

calls from fast food outlets in town on Good Friday saying they had not been warned about the event and had run out of food. We do not sell food at Ta Pinu so I think we are doing a lot for business in Bacchus Marsh by directing people there. A report to the meeting said the associations Events grants application for a Good Friday Pageant attracted only 48 points out of 100. Chief Executive Rob Croxford said it was up to the Association to contact council to discuss weaknesses in the application and they would be provided with support to improve and strengthen any future applications. Mr Borg said the shrine had no entry fees and did not take collections as it did not want to be seen as a business. He said without donations, it was unlikely the association would be able to make up the $2500 another way by April. One of the Associations biggest costs is the gear needed for the Easter procession. For example, the costume you might need to dress up as Pilate. The costumes are very expensive and every single year we lose some of them. They need to be stored and kept safe. The way I see it, a donation to the Good Friday Association would be a donation to the whole of Bacchus Marsh because we attract so many people to this area. We are the only pilgrimage site in Melbourne so people come from everywhere. He said Ta Pinu had room for 7000 cars and 40 people were needed each year to help direct a trafc nightmare. We make it clear that we are open to everyone not just Catholics. Also, anyone can come at any time of the day, no questions asked. We get Hindus. We even get atheists who stay at the church all night. All we ask is that you dont disturb others. Work on the site began in 1993. A basilica (not visible from the Western Freeway) was based on the Ta Pinu Church in Gozo Malta which in turn has been associated with several alleged miracles over 500 years.

Deferral on Koori site

An aboriginal gravesite and former camp could soon be turned into a childcare centre and 13 townhouses in Maddingley. Moorabool Council will wait until 2014 to decide on a planning permit for two neighbouring blocks bordering Labilliere, Lodge and Meikle streets near the Werribee River. It is understood the bones of an Aboriginal elder were found at the site in September 2012 during a Cultural Heritage Management Assessment. Bacchus Marsh Historical Society conrmed the corner of Lodge and Meikle streets was an indigenous camp in the mid 1800s and a site nearby (now Bacchus Marsh College) was used for corroborees. The December 4 Council meeting was told the Ballarat-based Wadawurrung Corporation had supported the proposal with conditions. If approved, the childcare centres playground would contain a memorial rock garden and plaque to protect the human remains underneath. The play area along Labilliere St would include natural materials such as tanbark and tree canopies rather than synthetic soft-fall and shadesails. The report also said signage would be erected to protect culturally sensitive areas from digging. A report to the meeting by Planning Ofcer Natalie Robertson said Aboriginal Affairs Victoria had no objections to the proposal, but planning records on the Council website indicated AAV had given no response to the townhouses or the childcare centre. Councillors requested written evidence of any approvals from AAV or the Wadawurrung Corporation. Meanwhile neighbours have objected to the plans, claiming the $6.8 million townhouses were squashed in with virtually no outdoor space and the two proposals together would create trafc chaos. Something like six homes on the site would be more appropriate, builder and neighbour Lincoln Powell said. If you look at these plans, 90 per cent of the site will be building, compared to the ResCode standard of 60 per cent. Mr Powell also said 800 sq m was the average block size in nearby streets and it was unrealistic to put 13 homes on 2600 sq m. Council staff recommended that a planning permit be issued, but Councillors voted unanimously to defer the decision until further information was available. The site hit the headlines in September when neighbours complained the land which was also a former truck depot - was now a rehazard and a rat-and-snake infested dumping ground for unwanted building waste. The land is owned by South Melbourne company ADGR Investments.

Preying on raptors
A BACCHUS MARSH wildlife photographer is hoping the release of an awardwinning eld guide will raise awareness of the regions magnicent raptors. Images of local eagles captured by David Whelan feature heavily in Birds of Prey of Australia: A Field Guide a 180-page book by University of New England researcher Stephen Debus. Many of the photos in the book were taken right here in Moorabool, Mr Whelan said. In fact over a two day period I have seen 14 of Australias 24 diurnal (daytime) raptors right here in the Bacchus Marsh area. Its phenomenal. The Rowsley Valley is a real hotspot for southern Australian species. Mr Whelan said Moorabool was also a haven for the nations smallest raptor the Little Eagle. This species is listed as vulnerable in the ACT and NSW. Were not sure whats happening but its possibly due to the increasing use of rabbit poison Pindone. But in the Bacchus Marsh area, the Little Eagle is doing just ne. I have seen about six or seven pairs and there would be many more out there. The book recently won a Whitley Award Commendation for Vertebrate Guide of the Year. The awards are presented by the Royal Zoological Society of NSW and reviewed by experts in the eld. Dr Debus said Tooronga Zoo staff had been using the glovebox-sized guide to identify species and had given it good reviews. The award was very gratifying, he said. CSIRO Publishing told me they had nominated the book and I was fairly condent it could get a gong. The pair are expected to work on more books in the future. Meanwhile, Mr Whelan is no stranger to the publishing world with over 30 years of photographic experience and several of his Rowsley Valley images used in Penny Olsens 2005 book Wedge Tailed Eagles. Mr Whelan is now working on a photographic project for Grow West between Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. ** Birds of Prey of Australia: A Field Guide by Stephen Debus is published by Birdlife Australia and CSIRO Publishing. It is available through Collins Booksellers (Bacchus Marsh) for RRP $39.95.

Trespassing child not truthful Court hears

By Kate Taylor The case against an awardwinning kelpie who allegedly bit a six year old girl on the face at a Balliang property earlier this year will be heard in the Ballarat Magistrates Court in March. Moorabool Shire Council is prosecuting the Wilson family, Stuart, Denise and Tony - the three owners of the dog, who are also the grandparents and uncle of the girl it allegedly attacked. The defence is disputing the girls account of what happened, despite that there are no witnesses to the incident. The case was heard as a contest mention at the Bacchus Marsh magistrates Court on Friday 6 December, where Magistrate John Lesser set it down for a two-day hearing on 25 and 26 March 2014 following a failed attempt at a roundtable discussion between the parties to resolve the matter earlier in the week. Mathew Sherwell, a solicitor from Maddocks lawyers representing Moorabool Shire Council, said that the prosecution is facing a three-pronged defence approach that claims that the girl is not a truthful witness, that the child was trespassing on a truck at the time of the incident and that the incident occurred as a result of an accident when the dog was trying to catch a ball. The prosecution has listed six witnesses, the defence has listed four. The girl, Christine, now aged seven, sustained facial injuries which required micro surgery and plastic surgery at the Royal Childrens Hospital involving 300 stitches, cheek splints and the re-attachment of a tooth. The dog allegedly involved in the incident, Mack, has won the Casterton Muster for the past three years and has won at the Geelong Show. It was impounded by council in mid-October at a secure location and is being monitored by a professional dog behaviourist at the cost to council of $48 per day. The court hearing was also reported by Melbournes ABC TV and Channel Nine News.

Emergency authorities have noted that there will be an above average risk of fire in grasslands and forests this season. Council has issued over 600 Fire Prevention Notices to property owners to clear their blocks for the coming Fire Season. Property owners issued with a Fire Prevention Notice must complete the work by the date specified on the notice and ensure that their property is maintained for the Fire Season. Council will commence re-inspections on 12 December 2013. Property owners who have failed to carry out the work specified in a Fire Prevention Notice risk heavy fines and will be required to repay the costs of any work, carried out by council to comply with the directions on the notice. Email: news@ themooraboolnews.com.au side ferns and bushes. The solution is painstaking hours of digging the blighters up. Part of the solution lies within the gardens of Blackwood, Dales Creek and in the Moorabool district. Did you know that festive Holly bush you may have along the fence is actually quietly producing the seeds which are so attractive to our birds. Off they go to a nearby patch of bush and poop, another Holly Patch begins! Do you really need to keep that prickly character? Dig it up! If you would like to keep this Yule Tide reminder, can I suggest giving it a severe short back and sides? By keeping it to a small waisthigh clipped bush, you will remove its seeds or the pollen that can spread to other plants. But you will need to do that every December! So before you Deck the Halls, consider the Dig Up! Diana Dawson Corinda (Qld)

Dear Editor, I read Simon Ramsays letter (MN 26 November) with great interest. I am sure that Mr Ramsay remembers the deregistration of the BLF in Victoria in 1986, by the then Cain Labor government, and nationally by the then Hawke/Keating Labor government. Subsequently the National Secretary of this union, Norm Gallagher, was gaoled for taking bribes from building companies. How anyone can, in the light this of history, claim the ALP is beholden to any union is beyond me. It is also worth remembering that not one building company ofcial was gaoled as a result of the royal commission into corruption in the building industry. The only people punished were union ofcials! Was this one rule for workers and another rule for management? Compare that with the case of Mr Shaw, MLA for Frankston, still a member of the Liberal

Party. But the union movement does have a long and proud tradition of standing up for working men and womens rights in the face of sometimes insurmountable opposition, with courage, tenacity and common decency. For example the Tolpuddle Martyrs of 1834 or the Ludlow County Massacre in 1914. So when Simon Ramsay pillories the ALP for pre-selecting union ofcials, men who have dedicated their lives to others, men who have shown the courage to stand up to employers and battle for their members rights, I am left wondering. Not one of the people Mr Ramsay mentions have been accused of any wrong doing. They are pilloried solely because of their Union membership. Even Mr Ramsays constant use of capitalisation on the word union tells a story. I dont think it is appropri-

ate to have members of parliament holding outdated and discriminatory views about any sector of our society. The days of shooting people who are union members, as happened to 25 men, women and even children in Ludlow in 1914, are long gone. In this day and age, we need members of parliament who are capable of having a sophisticated dialogue with all members of our society, regardless of their political point of view. Ross Redwin Korweinguboora Dear Editor, The beginning of December brings to mind The Holly Patch. This is a spot in the bush adjoining the Wombat State Forest which has an unfortunate invasion of English Holly plants. Our cool climes mimic those of its homeland and the Holly would very much like to become a prickly thicket, choking the creek-

Bedroom medians
4 2 3

9 Darcy Street, Maddingley Price: $435,000

This well presented one owner home is sure to capture your heart. Comprising of 4 bedrooms, WIR and en-suite to master, large welcoming entry hall, formal lounge, fully equipped kitchen, spacious open plan meals and a superb family room, central bathroom and laundry and a double garage with drive through access to rear colour bond workshop. Step outside to a large under cover pergola where you can entertain family and friends all year round. Located close to the golf course on a block approximately 934sqm, close to Schools, Maddingley Park and the local Railway Station.

For those buying a home in regional Victoria, the big attractions are often the lifestyle and affordability. However, regional Victoria is a very diverse region with large price variations, so house price data which merges all sales in regional Victoria are not always helpful. While median house prices are useful for analysing property market growth, a few particularly high sales in the larger towns can skew results for the entire region. So breaking down prices according to the town or suburb in regional Victoria can give buyers a more detailed and useful snapshot of what is happening. So, too, whether it was a house or unit and how many bedrooms it had. For example, while the median price for a three bedroom house in Torquay was $585,000 in the year ending September 2013, in Bendigo it was $308,000 and in Colac it was just $200,000. The differences in apartments and townhouse prices are equally dramatic.

The median price for a twobedroom apartment was $415,000 in Geelong more than double of a two-bedroom townhouse in Traralgon, where the median was just $206,000. Research is essential for buyers whether it be investors looking for the highest rental yields or capital growth, downsizers wanting to free up home equity or those looking for a tree change who may be moving to areas where theyre not familiar with the market. Suburb by suburb information about median prices according to property type and number of bedrooms for the 12 months to September is now available free on the REIV website. Go to reiv.com.au/ BedroomMedians Investors will be particularly interested to know that this also includes weekly median rents, gross rental yield and ve-year annual capital growth. Simply click on a blue coloured area and all the information about it will appear.

FIRE AWARENESS
Planning and preparation throughout the fire season
This summer, forecasts show that parts of Victoria are at above average risk
of bushfire and grassfire.

It is important to prepare your property, but you also need to prepare

yourself for fire.

Water supplies and bushfires

Central Highlands Water works closely with the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to safeguard our water supply assets across the regions identified as high risk. During times of extreme demand on water supplies, Central Highlands Water may not be able to guarantee continuous water pressure or uninterrupted supply to all areas. With this in mind, it is essential that if you live in a bushfire prone area, you have back up water supplies in place. For more information on how to stay safe this summer, visit the CFA website.

Family matters demand your undivided attention this week. TAURUSApril 21-May 22 No real pattern emerges this week. Each day seems to start a new trend, but the trend seems to go nowhere. Actually, it can be a successful week, especially in finance, if you take more of the initiative. GEMINIMay 23-June 21 Let your partner have the limelight for awhile now, and content yourself playing a supporting role. Watch your words - anything you say, even in jest, can be taken seriously.

Travel is emphasized and an unplanned detour can turn into a memorable adventure. If ever a Virgo has to learn to be diplomatic, this is the time. You come to everyones rescue. Final result - Avenue 113 def City Oval80 Division 9 nally got on the green after been awarded ve walkovers in the rst nine games, and they didnt disappoint.Led by octogenarian Viggo Hermanns rink which won by a massive 23 shots and Tim Cuttlers rink which won by 14 shots, Avenue were able to win all rinks and cement their place on top of the Division 9 ladder. Final scores - Avenue 89 def City Oval 49 In the midweek competition, two teams are maintaining excellent form. Division 1 avenged an earlier season loss to Midlands Golf, by defeating them by 16 shots in the return match. Doreen Connells rink won by 10 shots and Marie Russells rink won by 16 to place the team 3rd on the Division 1 ladder.
