INGLS B1 READING COMPREHENSION PART 1: Read the following text and choose the option (a, b or c) that best

matches the information you have read. Item 0 has been already completed as an example. SIOUX TRIBE The word Sioux is not the true name of this tribe: it comes from the name that another tribe, the Ojibway, used to refer to this tribe, which means little snakes. The real name that this tribe gives to themselves is Lakota or Dakota, depending on the dialect. Many Lakotas and Dakotas use the word Sioux to refer to themselves when they are speaking English, however. Nearly all Lakota and Dakota people speak Spanish. Despite pronunciation differences, Lakota and Dakota speakers can understand each other easily, just like people who speak American English and Canadian English can. The original Lakota/Dakota homelands were in what is now Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. The Sioux travelled freely, however, and there was also significant Sioux presence in the modern US states of Iowa, Nebraska, Montana and Southern Illinois, and in south-central Canada. Today, most Sioux people live in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Saskatchewan. There are 13 Sioux political subdivisions, combined into seven major tribes. However, today these divisions have more cultural significance than political. Each Dakota/Lakota band is politically autonomous which mean it has its own land and leadership and makes indecisions independently of other Sioux bands. The Seven Fires Council is the top governing group and it makes decisions for the entire Sioux nation. It is composed of all seven tribal chiefs, one from each of the seven tribes. Like most Native American tribes, each Lakota/Dakota community lives on its own reservation (reserve, in Canada), which belongs to them and stands legally under their control. However, the US and Canadian governments still consider the Sioux American or Canadian citizens. Each Lakota/Dakota band has its own government, laws, police, and other services, just like a small country. The political leader of a band is called chief. The chief used to be a man chosen by tribal council members, but today Sioux tribal leaders can be of either gender and are popularly elected in most bands, just as mayors and governors are. In the past, Sioux women were in charge of the home. Besides cooking and cleaning, a Dakota/Lakota woman built her familys house and dragged the heavy posts with her whenever the tribe moved. Houses belonged to the women in the Sioux tribes. Men were hunters and warriors, responsible for feeding and defending their families. Usually only men became Sioux chiefs, but both genders took part in storytelling artwork and music along with traditional medicine.
