Sydney Klingler 9 December 2013 ENGL 2100 ePortfolio Reflection This English 2100 Technical Writing course has

taught me more of the details regarding instructions, demonstrations, assistive technologies, and user-friendly resources. The projects completed during this course, two of which are available on my ePortfolio page, enabled me to develop knowledge of these things and later demonstrate my ability to complete or understand them. I have improved as a writer through this course because I now think more of what the reader is taking from what I am saying, and that has led my writing to be more effective at seeing my goal, my audience, and my likely reader in achieving the goal with the maximum possible effectiveness while constantly considering the remaining two. For example, Project Two: Technical Description forced me to see what I clearly understand from the eyes of someone who does not already know it (or think like I do) so usability testing to make my instructions more user-friendly resulted in clearer instructions for users of any car repair skill level. Due to confusion and misunderstandings regarding usability testing and effective instructions during the drafting stage, I chose to not include my work from Project One. Rather, I chose to show the work that accurately showcases how my understanding of the course material expanded as the semester and instruction progressed. With that being said, I chose Project Two, as described above, and Project Three to include on my ePortfolio because I personally believe they reflect my accomplishments in this

course and the progress I made through completion of the Applied Practice assignments preceding each of the projects. Project Two helped me reevaluate how others perceive what I explain, and led the process of editing and adapting my writing and understanding from the early stages into the final work in order to elicit the response I seek from those who access it, all while maintaining truth, correctness, and a user-friendly presentation. Project Three is an example of how I collaboratively work with othersworking to think how they do, and think how our audience would receive our information, to effectively accomplish a specific taskwhich was in this case, the creation of our website aimed to improve over-the-counter medication labeling. In conclusion, after reflecting on the objectives of this course and the material presented and expected throughout it, this course has led me to improve my critical thinking abilities, to recognize reader response to style, format, information, and other factors of technical writing, and to adapt, edit, and improve my messages to best suit the audiences of each project, stage, and form of technical writing.
