POLICE investigating the murder of teenager Siriyakorn "Bung" Siriboon have twice arrested a man who says he killed the girl in a road accident. The 24-year-old was arrested in August this year over the disappearance of Bung, who was aged 13 when she vanished on June 2, 2011, on her way to school in Boronia. He was interviewed at that stage and released without charge, "pending further inquiries", police said. The same man was again interviewed in October, released without charge and is not in custody.

"He remains a person of interest to the investigation," a Victoria Police statement issued last night said. Detectives have put hundreds of hours into testing his account of what happened. They have seized property from the man which is being forensically tested.

His vehicle has been examined for damage consistent with his version of events. He is not the only person under scrutiny. "The homicide squad continues to investigate the disappearance of Bung and have a number of persons of interest and active lines of enquiry. As such, it's not appropriate comment further," he said. The ABC last night reported that the local man had told investigators his car hit and killed the girl as he drove on the morning she disappeared. He said he had disposed of the body at a local reserve. This prompted a search of the Old Joe's Creek retarding basin which ran for a week without finding Bung's remains. The latest development comes two months after the disbandment of the Puma taskforce, which had spent two years devoted to solving the case.

Police said at the time that homicide squad detectives would remain committed to the investigation. Hundreds of sex offenders have been checked and 1000 homes canvassed as part of the inquiry. Bung vanished after leaving her home in Elsie St and setting off for the 10-minute walk to classes at Boronia Heights College. Her family still holds out hope she is alive.
