Stanza 1
Style and method (process) of presentation and prediction of Horoscope at the
inception.
Sage Parashar speaks five straight and five horizontal lines to draw zodiacal sign
chart and in this chart starting from east to west rising sign at the time of birth up to
twelve signs and planetary position are to be recorded. And from ascendant point,
moon and significators, pad (cups), sub pad (sub cups), ascended pad (aarudh),
house position, Raising Sign position, hora, ghati and other divisions with ascendant
point and its lord. And, house lords and other house and planetary significators and
attributes /virtues/ textures, how to make auspicious and inauspicious predictions
would be told in the ascending chapters given here in after (1).
Comments
Sage Parashar is now giving instructions about how to draw a chart. His view is that of
South Indian style in my opinion as under. He advises to record 12 houses and
planetary positions etc. in the chart in specified order by assigning number to sign as
follows.
12 Ketu 1 Ascendant 2 Moon 3 Budh
11 Sani 4 Jupiter
10 Mars
5 Sun
9 8 7 Sukra 6 Rahu
BPHS Ch-2 2
At the time of birth, map (chart) that shows the situation and position of planets,
constellations and rising and ascending degree of house, pada, arudh, karaka-
significator, etc. as tabulated in required manner is known as Horoscope. It is
noteworthy that the sage has given the most important suggestions while drawing the
chart to include all details with ascendants and sign lord etc. to karaka, nakshatra
pada, its lords, arudh pada and so on to assess the chart. Personal affairs, health &
wealth, calamities, natural and personal disasters and well beings and other events of
the life of the native. From this chart with the help of other requisite details regarding
arudh pad, sub pad, rising sign, raising sign, etc. etc. etc. as depicted in this
Horashastra, how to make predictions shall be foretold.
This instruction is the visualizing element for sincere student to read between the lines
and carefully memorized the dictums to venture the predictions from the given chart.
It is noteworthy that there are other types of charts also prevailing region wise in India
which are known as northern style, Bengali style, western style etc. Northern Style is
famous in western and north India, south style is famous in south India, Bengali Style
is prevailing in eastern India and western style is famous in European countries. There
may be others but this is commonly categorized.
In south Indian and Bengali style signs in the chart are fixed and ascendant point and
planets positions are to be recorded accordingly whereas in northern style house are
fixed and rising sign and planetary positions are to be recorded respectively. In north
style if say Sagittarius Ascendant is rising then it should be recorded in first house of
east by assigning numerical value to sign Sagittarius as 9 and then in anti clock wise in
second house Capricorn for 10 and then in third house Aquarius as 11 and so on is to
be recorded with planetary positions. The north-south style may be given as under.
Other charts delineation is not envisaged here. Instead, it will be interesting to note the
definition of chart/horoscope and need of this science as indirectly told by the sage.
Sage Parashar is then enduring the working principles and dictums of astrology to
judge the various events of human life and affairs. This is very important as it shows
the importance and utility of astrology. Astrology is known as high probability science
and can not be denied. It is also an art of prediction. Astrology is a science of influence
of stars on living bodies and earthily affairs. It delineates the actions of our celestial
bodies upon animate and inanimate beings and objects and their reactions to such
BPHS Ch-2 3
influences. Astrology is self defending and subjective as well. It is subjective as it
deals with the study of lifes reaction to planetary influence.
Now a day what we are studying is the deviational form of astrological dictums and
principles underlying the working textures and differs from as established by our
ancient sage like Parashar. It is the deviations inevitable according to the change,
thoughts and customs with the passage of time. And this will be more deviated as per
the need of the time. Hindu sages have studied astrology and frame dictums and rules
to predict about personal affairs, health & wealth, calamities, natural and personal
disasters and well beings and other orbit events which are true & correct even today
and can not be denied. One of these ancient sages of Hinduism is lord of jyotish Shri
Parashara.

Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Jupiter and Venus represent Brahmin caste, Mars and Sun Ksatriya,
Moon and Mercury Vaishya and Saturn represents Sudra cast (11). Moon, Sun, and
Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, and Mars and Saturn respectively possess inherent
nature (spontaneity) of Satva, Rajas and Tamas virtues (12). Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Planet
Sun gives sweet speech, brownish or yellowish eye (eye, sight, view, vision), square
body, pious nature (good clean, honest, pure, shining habits), bilious (physical body)
tendency and is good male (adequate all quality of male gender) with few or trifling hair
(13). Planet Moon gives cough and gastric bodily tendency, intellect, round shape
body, placid eyes (cool & moist, likable, cheerful, pleasant, happy, bland), beautiful
and attractive speech, wavering (tottering, fickle) and lustful (passionate) in nature
(14). Mars gives cruel nature, reddish complexion, warm and perplexed body,
wavering attitude, charitable or liberal heart, bilious tendency, angriness and thin
middle part of body (krus madya tanu) i.e. waist (15). Mercury gives pleasant and
attractive physique, wearied speech (not easily intelligible), interested in whisper and
laughter, bilious and phlegmatic tendency and windy nature (16). Jupiter gives big and
solid organs, brownish or yellowish eyes, and hair full head, coughs nature, good male
quality and is learned in all compendiums of disciplines and sacred books (17). Venus
gives happiness, pleasing body appearance, superiority, charming and beautiful eyes,
is poet, gives more coughed nature, windy body and curly hair full head (18). Saturn
gives thin and long body, yellowish eyes, windy body nature, coarse teeth, laming
walking and indolent structure with hard and rough pointing hair (19). Rahu
resembles to obscured or Smokey configuration of body structure, bluish complexion,
roaming in jungle, horrible look and is having windy or gastric tendency, and is a male
gender and Ketu is alike Rahu (20).

According to Hindu/Indian caste system there are four namely Brahmin, Kshatriya,
Vaishya and Sudra. This classification is not done in other countries as this system
provides the basic virtues. Brahmin is the class of people who are engaged in the
highest duty to God, meditation works, uplifting of spiritual and religious levels,
philanthropic and charitable works and so on. In short this caste is working for the
cause of God, healthy and happy liveliness. Jupiter and Venus govern moral,
BPHS Ch-2 12
intellectual and spiritual Brahmin caste. Next caste is kshatriya i.e. martial in nature
and may be called protecting class in broader sense. This fighting class always
honored and knighted for their spirit and courage from the time immemorial. In todays
context, they cover from Army and Police at large to the security people at the lowest
level. This kshatriya caste is of highest temporal power and physical energy with
control element and is governed by Sun and Mars. The third caste is Vaishya i.e.
people of commercial, mercantile, banking and industrial class holding the
entrepreneurship and key positions. This caste is under the governance of Mercury
and Moon. The forth caste is Sudra ruled by Saturn. Sudra class includes all level of
clerks, operators, agriculture or other labor or wager and all other working personnel.
This basic caste is important as it indicates the native to incline the work as influenced
by that planet concerned. For instance, if Mars and Sun conjoined and strong then the
native will be bold and courageous and fight to protect the interest of family and
country in the larger context. The inclination as indicated by planets is also important
while choosing the carrier field of the native as in the instance case the native will love
to joined the army or police force or security of common level, in general as per the
strength of mars and sun. There is a difficulty to put agriculturist in the governance of
particular caste as it deals with growing the crops falling under industrial works and
protecting crops falling under courageous works. Accordingly, Moon and Mars govern
it. This way the astrologer could apply this basic caste system under the planet
concerned; but a prudent and practical approach is required. (11)
Satva guna indentified as divine and spiritual virtues and governed by Sun, Moon and
Jupiter. Every virtue which is good is satva and these good virtues includes kindness
to people, unharmed and invariable cause, calmness and truthfulness, respecting and
worshipping people working for good purpose and deep faith in and devotee of god.
Raajas is the virtue of bright and spotless enjoyment of any usufruct activity and it
ranges from performance of Yajna to the performance of dance and music; to the
literatures interest, fond of women and possession of courage. Mercury and Venus rule
this rajas guna. Tamas guna as handled by Mars and Saturn signifies bad works,
irresponsible in works, attitude, speaking and dressings as well. Excessive sleeping,
leisure, cruelty and durbudhi are some of the virtues of tamas. Satva guna give
intelligence and bliss if Jupiter and luminaries are powerful. Similarly, Rajas gives royal
virtues if Mercury and Venus are strong so is Mars and Saturn the bad virtues. Another
classification is also there according to Vedic literature like six bhagas i.e. six royal
virtues making the lord like indra and other devi-devta called satwik gunas. Six such
virtues are aishwarya (superhuman power or majestic power, non-violence),
shree/soundrya (splendid fortune and abundant wealth, loveliness,), dharma
(religiousness; morality and propriety of conduct, no hatred), gyaan (wisdom), kirti/yash
fame, delight, glory and vairagya (detachments to materialism, Samabhava i.e.
kindness and equability to every living being and Samdarshan i.e. to see lord in each
and every thing whether living being or mere substance). Six attributes who possesses
will be bhagvan (bhaga dharyati iti bhagvan) i.e. god. And these are represented by
Moon for Soundrya , Sun for aishwarya, kirti/yash and Vairagya and Guru for shree,
dharma, gyaan and final emancipation is also reigned by guru. Rajasic gunas are
kaama and Matsara represented by Venus and Mercury respectively. All kinds of
wishes & desires, love and affections and innocent pleasure and enjoyment is
governed by kaama and ruled by Venus. All kinds of intoxications, exhilarations,
BPHS Ch-2 13
selfishness, envies, greediness, wrathness & wickedness and joyousness &
cheerfulness are covered by matsar and ruled by Mercury. Tamasic gunas are
krodh, mada and moha. All kinds of drunkeardness, pride, lust, jaggedness, hilarity,
passion and arrogations is covered by mada and governed by Saturn. Material and
wealth greediness is actually governed by lobha and is ruled by Saturn (or modern
astrologers say Rahu also as it is said sani vart rahu and the saint doesnt mention
rahu). Lobha is a by-product of matsar and mada. Attributes such as provoking,
anger, hatred, hastiness (absence of boldness or inconsiderate), infuriation and
irritation are covered by kRodh and is ruled by Mars. Attributes such as attachments,
dilutions, amazement, infatuation and hallucination are covered by moha and is
governed by Mars (or modern astrologers say Ketu also as it is said mangal vart ketu
and the saint doesnt mention ketu).
The list does not end here more will be found in our old age literatures about all these
Satva, Rajas and Tamas guna. Here I tried to give the basic idea and one can go
beyond this and plough our Puranas, Vedas, Shruti and Smruti as per their choice and
hunger of knowledge. By virtue of these triguna the astrologer could easily understand
the nature of the native as per the strongest influential planet in the chart. (12)
The sage gives various characters of planets to understand it basic nature and when
such planet is strong in the chart the native will be influenced by these attributes. This
attributes are surfaced when the planet is having strength in the chart and does not
mean that the planet itself posses such attributes. This may construed as previous
karmic results indicated by the planets whose attributes seen in the native and stated
in exampling language by the sage. The language is plain and exampling; there is no
need to go elaboration. The sage has given important attributes and major in nature
and there may be other attributes, which may be added to this as per change and
modernity of time.
When Sun is strong in the chart it will give attributes as good and clean speech,
brownish eyes, clean and influential nature, bilious nature of physical body, may have
trifling or short hair and shall have a good quality of the male gender. And if sun is
want of strength or is weak and afflicted the opposite result may be seen as egoism,
poor vitality, burning biliousness, baldness and so on which may call bad virtues. This
is what sage wants to convey and tabulated at the end for the entire nine planets for
ready reference. (13)
When moon is full and strong it will give loveliness and pleasant body, the structure
may be round shape odd in looking, the bodily nature is gastric and phlegmatic, lovely
eyes and speech, lovelorn (madanaatur) and quivering or inconstant mind. (14)
If mars strong in the chart will give cruel nature especially while protecting and fighting
for the right thing and reddish complexion. It will keep the body warm and giving
energy to the native and perplexed body and strong mental condition is because the
martial element gives activeness and always at works. Also it will give wavering
attitude, charitable or liberal heart, bilious tendency, angriness and thin middle part of
body (krus madya tanu) i.e. waist; this thin part of the body indicates the masculine
BPHS Ch-2 14
power and appearance most liked by woman and bilious nature is that of fiery
element at the base (15).
Strong Mercury gives pleasant and attractive physique at least outer look, wearied
speech (not easily intelligible), interested in whisper, laughter, comical, funny,
ridiculous, mirth jest and amusements. It also gives bilious and phlegmatic tendency
and windy nature (16).
Strong Jupiter gives big and solid, great, large, massy solid, mighty, strong, clear, and
full-grown organs. It also gives brownish or yellowish eyes, and hair full head, coughs
nature, good male quality and is learned. It makes the native skilled, proficient,
conversant with, experienced, wise, clever in all compendiums of disciplines and
sacred books (17).
Strong Venus gives happiness, pleasing, dear, liking (kant) body (vapu) appearance,
superiority, distinguished personality, charming and beautiful eyes. It is poet, gives
more coughed nature, windy body and curly hair full head (18).
Strong Saturn gives thin and long body, yellowish eyes, windy body nature, coarse,
small and thick teeth, laming walking and indolent structure with hard and rough
pointing hair (19).
Rahu resembles to obscured or Smokey configuration of body structure, bluish
complexion, roaming in jungle, horrible look and is having windy or gastric tendency,
and is a male gender and Ketu is alike Rahu (20).
As said in stanza 13 herein above the sage has given important attributes and major in
nature and there may be other attributes, which may be added to this as per change
and modernity of time. Accordingly, some basic texture or virtues and negative virtues
tabulated as under to see that the planet is favourable and otherwise strong the virtues
seen and if the planet without favour and afflicted or wants of strength the negative
virtues seen and in the case of average strength mixed results may be seen. Of
course, to these virtues the proficient and students may add more as per their insights.
Rahu may give saturns nature and Ketu Mars pls note as commonly known.

Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Bones, Blood, Marrow (of bones), Skin and hide (leather) (fat
vaassa marrow), Semen fluid or virile and muscles are indicated by the planet Sun,
Moon etc respectively(21). Temple [residence of god, heaven], water place, fire place,
sport place, Treasure place, sleeping place or bed room and filthy or poor or burnt or
garbage places or stables are the adobes [habitation, dwellings] of the planets Sun,
Moon etc respectively (22). In the same manner Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Ayan, Muhurta
(khsana), Day (vaar), Season ( ritu i.e. two moths), Month (maas), Fortnight ( paksha)
and Year ( samaa i.e comprises of all this ayana, ritu etc.) are the period allotted to
Sun, Moon, and so on up to Saturn (23). Oh Dwijottama (Maitrey)! Acrid or pungent
(katu), salty or saline (lavan), bitter or chilies or spicy (tikta), sweet of luscious (mista),
honeyed or pleasant or mellifluous (madhur), yeasty or sugar (iikha or iikshu) and
astringent (kasshaaya) are the test, all recognized to the planets sun, moon, mars and
so on (24). Mercury and Jupiter become strongest in east direction, Sun and Mars in
south, Saturn in marine and oceanic direction i.e. west and Venus and Moon are
strongest in northern direction (25). Oh Dwijottama (Maitrey)! Moon, Mars and Saturn
are endowed power in night, Mercury is all the time powerful i.e. during day and night
and remaining planets viz., sun, Jupiter and Venus are powerful during day time (26).
Cruel planets are strong in dark half of lunar month and auspicious or benefic planets
get strength in bright half of lunar month. And similarly malefic planets are strong in
dakshinayana and benefic in uttarayana (27).
Comments
Sun governs bones, moon blood and cells, mars bone marrow, mercury skin and hide
or leather to cover inner part, Jupiter fat and marrows, Venus semen virile and Saturn
governs the muscles. These are the basic ingredient of body structure i.e. sapta
dhaatu. The strength or weakness indicates safety or otherwise to the dhaatu
concerned. For example sun is afflicted at birth may give disorder of bones or may
suffer from bone diseases or fracture of bones and the like. The native incur disorder
of blood or blood cell genetical problem if the moon is primarily ill posed. Similarly
other aspects of the dhaatu may consider in relation to respective planets. (21)
This habitation or adobe places are used in too many ways in astrological prediction
especially in horary. For example, in the query of lost buffalo if moon is involved
directly then it may be found in water or near by watery places and if Saturn is also
concerned it may be found in the stable or garbage place nearby water. In the case
sex union the places indicated by the moon is watery places means the couple would
like to have sex on water or nearby watery places; if it is Venus then bedroom, is the
manner of using these attributes so on and so forth. (22)
BPHS Ch-2 19
In narrating the period of planets nirvishankam means without doubt or hesitation is
the word used by the sage who indicates confidence of the study of time and space by
our sages and their systemic approach to deal with the planets. The period allotted is
as under.
Sun ayana i.e. about six months
Moon muhutrata i.e. 48 minutes
Mars vaar i.e. day and as per other school week
Mercury ritu i.e. season, about two solar months
Jupiter maas i.e. month
Venus paksha i.e. fortnight
Saturn samaa i.e. year
The periods allotted above is useful in judging the event or maturity of event or
fructification of an event in Dasa or Bhukti i.e. Period and sub periods of planets
concerned. While dealing with query of job opportunity, if the planet involved is Sun
then the time will be near about six month and in the case of diseases recovery it will
take six months. In the case of dasa judgment, positive results are indicated by sun
period then fructification of event is due in six months. In using these attributes, a
prudent approach is required. Another method of judging the event in horary is
navamsa and accordingly find the lord of navmasa in query and calculate the number
of navamsa traversed by it and this lord indicates Ayana, Muhuruta etc. as per the
navamsa lord is sun, etc. For instance, at the time of querry Leo is the ascendant and
Sagittarius is navamsa and its lord Guru is in Karka rasi then from Sagittarius it
traverses seven signs and henceforth the success of the query will be seven months
from the date querry as Guru is allotted one month time.
Ayan is the time taken by Sun to complete a cycle of north and south course of zodiac
and this is about six months period. Muhurat allotted to moon, means duration of 48
minutes of 16 in total in 24 hrs.; a day indicated by mars. Ritu means transit of sun in
two signs for each season according to Indian ephemeris viz. sun in Taurus and
Gemini indicate grishma i.e. summer, Cancer and Leo varshaa i.e. rainy, Virgo and
Libra sharad i.e. winter, Scorpio and Sagittarius hemant i.e. winter, Capricorn and
Aquarius shishir i.e. samashitoshna, Pisces and Aries vasant i.e warm and is allotted
to Mercury. (23)
The strongest planet in the chart will influence the native for a particular test
recognized by that planet; say for example if Jupiter is strong and influence the 2H
and/or 4H the house of test, the native will like honeyed and pleasant food. The
strongest planet may prevail and if there are more then one, prudent approach is
required as if moon and mars are strongest then the native will like salty and chilies or
spicy food.(24)
The sage is giving directional strength of the planets i.e. Digbala is very important
while dealings with period and sub period of the planets, horary and predictive
astrology. In horary stolen article will be found in east if Jupiter or Mercury is involved
in any way. It will be better to travel in the direction indicated by the planet or otherwise
BPHS Ch-2 20
obstructions and hindrance may occur. If the person is living in the place devoid of
directional strength, will face difficulties and losses; and conversely if Jupiter is the
strongest and the native is running its period, east direction from present or native
place will be highly beneficial and he/she will succeed. Directional strength as
commonly taken is as under.
Direction House Planets
East 1 Jupiter and Mercury
North 4 Venus and Moon
West 7 Saturn
South 10 Sun and Mars
Further other views may be summarized as under.
East 1 Sun
East-North 2&3 Jupiter
North-North 4 ercury
North-West 5&6 Mon
West-West 7 Saturn
West-south 8&9 Rahu-Ketu
South 10 Mars
East- South 11&12 Venus
According to Parasari School, Moon and Venus will get directional strength in north
and Saturn in the west and if Saturn rise in the ascendant i.e. east will be bereft the
strength i.e. no digbala. (25)
The sage is giving Kaala Bal (strength during particular time) and accordingly Moon,
Mars and Saturn are strong in night and Sun, Guru, Venus are strong in day and
Mercury is always strong during day and night. During dark half of lunar month cruel
planets viz., Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and dark Moon are getting strength of time
i.e. kaal bal and during bright half of lunar month Budh, bright Moon, Jupiter and
Venus are getting the strength. On similar ground of kaal bal, the malefic planets are
strong in dakshinayana and benefic in uttarayana. (26-27)

In own day, year, planetary hour (hora), month and special event or auspicious
celebration and in own time planets are strong and even then Saturn, Mars, Mercury,
BPHS Ch-2 21
Jupiter, Venus, Moon, Rahu and Sun are intrinsically stronger (naishargik bal) in the
given ascending order (28).
Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Please understand that Surya (if strong) gives generation to large
and stoutly trees, Saturn ugly and disgusting trees like thorny bush and zamI tree,
Moon milky like rubber and gum yielding trees, Mars bitter and ill-smelling trees like
neem and bilva tree, Mercury and Jupiter fruitful trees, Venus flower full trees and
Saturn increases tasteless and fruit-flower less trees (29).
Rahu is of chandal race or species, Ketu is of cross breeding, mixture, or confusing
caste and it is said that Rahu, Ketu and Saturn indicate anthill (30).
Rahu represents multi colored or variegated mattress or clothes, Ketu torn or rags one,
Rahu owns lead metal and Ketu blue sapphire. (31)
Oh Dwij (Maitrey)! Jupiters clothes or robes are silky yellow or saffron (peetamber),
Sukras pious and festive linen, Suns fine red linen, Moons fine and white cool linen,
similarly Mercurys black silken, Mars bright red colored and Saturns clothes or robes
are variegated wrinkled colorful. (32-33-34)
It is known that Venus season is Vasant, Mars and Suns Greeshma, Moons Varshaa
and sharad, Jupiters Hemant and Saturns season is Shishir. Rahu denotes eight
months and Ketu three months. (35-36)
Metal planets are Rahu, Mars, Saturn and Moon, herbs and vegetation Root (moola)
planets are Sun and Venus and remaining planets Jupiter, Mercury and Ketu are
named as living beings (Jeeva). (37)
Among planets Saturn is counted as old and bestows increase in longevity. And in its
natural strength during its period, it gives numerous years of life. (38)
Comments
The sage is giving intrinsic strength (naishargik bal) of the planets in concise manner.
As said earlier lordship of Day or Week is given to Mars and on Tuesday Mars getting
more natural strength than other planets, similarly on Thursday Jupiter gets extra
strength even though Mars is the general ruler of the day. Hora i.e. planetary hour is
under the governance of Moon and on Monday, Moon hora will be most beneficial;
similarly on Sunday sun hora will get innate strength. On the same ground as per kaala
bal as said earlier Saturn, Mars and Moon are strong in night and here also if Moon,
Mars and/or Saturn hora fall in the night on Wednesday, these planets will get
spontaneous strength i.e. naishargik bal. Year is attributed to Saturn and if the year is
started on Saturday then Saturn will get natural strength as the lord of the year and if it
is Friday, Venus will get the strength. On special or auspicious celebrations like Rama
Navami i.e. the birth day of lord Rama, Sun gets the natural strength as it is the
incarnation of lord Rama and similarly on Krishnas birth day event Moon gets the
inherent strength. Sun is the strongest among all planets, less strong than Sun is Rahu
BPHS Ch-2 22
and less strong than Rahu is Moon so on and so forth up to Saturn which is the least
strong. [28]
No comments required and for detailed study one may refer Bruhad Jataka of Varaha
Mihir. [29]
Chandal means pariah i.e. person generally despised and outcaste. Person of the
lowest, worst, sinful and cruel deeds like butcher, shooter, killers, atheist (unbeliever of
God and Religion), drunkards, druggist etc. are amongst Rahu caste people. Ketu
refers to mixture or confusing caste. This means that person born to couple of inter
caste marriage, person born on account of adultery, person born to lowest class male
and fine class female etc. are some of the examples. Rahu, Ketu and Saturn rules the
anthill may have literature meaning and indicate the team spirit or power of
studiousness and unity. The native born with these planets influence may build up
these virtues of studiousness and unity in self and others under their control. (30)
One can judge the chart of Rahu influence if the native likes variegated cloths, so is
the Ketu for torn one and one can keep or charity lead metal and blue sapphire to
minimize the affliction caused by Rahu and Ketu respectively. (31)
To gain the auspicious influence or minimize afflictions of planets the colors given here
may be used. As per modern age the delineation may be modified to gain maximum
good result of the planets favoring. Repeating; for all practical purpose, say, at the time
of marriage proposal meeting Guru, Surya and Budh are influencing then it can be
suggested that be seated in North to East direction or facing and gift the bouquet
containing Yellow and Red color flowers with green leaves and Golden and Red ribbon
wrapping. Venus being the causative of marriage, the female can wear clothes of
festive made of lenin or silk which are pious i.e. not violated by her monthly period, not
wear in funerals etc. etc. One can easily identified a native under Saturn influence as
he has the tendency to wear wrinkled, unclean and/or dark colored clothes. (32-33-34)
This stanza is useful in determining the season in the query of lost article or in
consulting lost horoscope. The planet in the ascendant governs the season and if
there is no planet then the planet ruling the dreskana indicates the season. If there is
more than one planet, the season will be determined amongst the strongest of them.
The season indicated is the most suitable for the native and his physical and metal
health will be very good in that season compare to the other seasons. (35-36)
This moola, dhatu and jeeva classification of planets is very useful in horary and
predicting astrology. In astrology it can be used to see the earning activities of the
native and in horary is to see the unasked query. For instance, if Venus is in any way
related to earning activity and strong, the native may go for herbs and vegetation (root)
fields may be in modern times a restaurant and also if strong Sun joins the chart with
Venus may be Ayurved profession is preferred. Similarly in untold query if Sani is the
strongest planet then the query is about metal. The readers may refer to other classical
works on astrology for detailed outlook. (37)
BPHS Ch-2 23
This stanza is very important while dealing with the longevity matters and among all
the planets Saturn gives the maximum years of life if he is naturally strong. The
longevity chapter is way ahead hereinafter. Saturn is an old age indicator and should
be construed to give outlook of elder age. For example Saturn in 7
th
house will give the
wife who is appeared to be older age than what she is. (38)
The above 2 to 38 verses are worth remember verbatim on finger tips as theses
attributes of planets are very handy tool in prognostication.
Details of inherent nature and attributes of planets is ended here. And next is method
of calculating plenary position at the time of query or birth from ephemeris.

From the selected valid time (birth time or query time), the time in ephemeris
(panchanga) (giving the positions of planets at that particular time) if falls above the
line then deduct the selected time from panchanga and if the time falls below the line
then deduct the panchang time from selected time. The numerical value thus arrived is
the variance which negative (-) in the case of above line and positive (+) in the case of
below line. (39)
Now multiply this (+) or (-) variance by the daily movement value and divide it by 60
(total gatis of the day) then resulting value is to be deducted if there is negative
variance and add if it is positive and we shall get the clear position of the planet (in
rasi- amsa- gati- pal) for the day. And in the same manner if we multiply the variance
value of the day with movement value of planet and calculate it as per above said
method we shall arrive at the planetary position of the selected time. || 40 ||
If the valid time is more than the nakstra timings (in panchanga gati pal) then deduce
the nakstra timings from valid timing we get bhayat. If we deduct valid days nakstra
timings from 60 (being days total gatis) and add the resulting figure (in gati-pal) to the
next days nakstra timings (as mentioned in panchanga) we will get the bhabhog. ||41
||
If the valid time is less than the nakstra timing or nakstra timing is more than the valid
time then deduct the nakstra timing (of panchang in gati pal) from 60 (total days gati
pal) and add the result to the valid time we will get the bhayat. And adding valid days
nakstra timing to the valid timing (birth time or query time) we will get bhabhog. ||42||
BPHS Ch-2 24
Now, this bhayat is to be multipied by 60, devide it by bhabhog and resulting figure
is to be added to the last ashwini etc nakstras number which is to be multiplied by 60
we will get rasi amsa kala vikala etc. And in this rashi etc. figure if we multiply it by 2
and divide by 9 we will get the Chandra in rasi-ams-kala-vikala. To determine the
movement of Chandra (Chandra gati), the mean average movement of 48000 (60*800)
is to be divided by bhabhog we can determine the movement of Moon for the valid
day (ista din) i.e. date of birth. || 43-45||
Comment:
Now a days daily ephemeris are in use and the calculation method given above is for
olden days and for the sake of understanding the method given by sage is consciously
translated. Even the computers are there for instant calculations and the subject
matter of horasashtra is prediction acumen, therefore, elaboration is not envisaged
nor commented. In olden days calculation part ( ganit skand) is very tuff and innovation
and research becomes limited and now a days calculation is made easy with modern
computers and innovation and research is immensely bounding every day; search and
testing of novel ideas and interpretations of stanzas and sutras given by our old age
sages is in race.

Exaltation and Debilitation is explained. For the seven Grahas, from Surya onward, the
exaltation Rasis are, respectively, Mesh, Vrishabh, Makar, Kanya, Kark, Meen and
Tula. The deepest exaltation degrees are, respectively, 10, 3, 28, 15, 5, 27 and 20 in
those Rasis is. And in the seventh rasi from the said exaltation Rasi each Grah has its
own debilitation. The same degrees of deep exaltation apply to deep fall. ||46-48||
In Simha the first 20 degrees are Suryas Multrikon, while the rest is his own rasi. After
the first 3 degrees of exaltation portion in Vrishabh, for Chandra, the rest is her
Multrikon. Mangal has the first 12 degrees in Mesh, as Mooltrikon with the rest therein
becoming simply his own rasi. For Budh, in Kanya the first 15 degrees are exaltation
zone, the next 5 degrees Multrikon and the last 10 degrees are own rasi. The first one
third i.e. 10 degree of Dhanu is the Multrikon of Guru, while the remaining part thereof
is his own rasi. Sukr divides Tula into two halves keeping the first, as Multrikon and the
second, as own rasi. Sanis arrangements are same in Kumbh, as Surya has in Simha.

Coments:
This is very important for the astrologer to keep it on finger tips as it will be every now

and natural relations are adhimitra i.e. occasional (mutual) friend. If planets are neutral
in natural relation and friend in temporal then they become friend. If planets are neutral
in natural relationa and enemy in temporal relation then they become enemy. If planets
are neutral in both the relation then they become neutral. And planets which are
enemy in both temporal and natural relations are adhisatru i.e. occasional enemy. The
daivagna should consider these and declare results accordingly. (53-58)
Comments:
Adhi mitra and adhi satru are known as extreme or mutual friend or enemy but the
dictionary meaning is occasional which is more suitable.
Some other texts give some idea on relationship of planets as under which worth look
at.
BPHS Ch-2 26
Natural Relationships- Note the Rasi which are the 2nd, 4
th
, 5th, 8th, 9
th
and 12
th
from the Mooltrikon of a Grah. The Grahas ruling such Rasi is, are its friends, apart
from the Lord of its exaltation Rasi, Lords other than these are its enemies. If a Grah
becomes its friend as well, asits enemy (on account of the said two computations),
then it is neutral, or equal. Temporary Relationships- The Grah, posited in the 2nd, 3rd,
4th, 10th, 11th, or the 12
th
from another, becomes a mutual friend. There is enmity
otherwise. (This applies to a given Janm Kundali). Compound Relationship- Should
two Grahas be naturally and temporarily friendly, they become extremely friendly.
Friendship on one count and neutrality on another count make them friendly. Enmity
on one count combined with affinity on the other turns into equality. Enmity and
neutralship cause only enmity. Should there be enmity in both manners, extreme
enmity is obtained. The daivagna should consider these and declare results
accordingly.
Effects in ratio- A Graham in exaltation gives fully good effects, while in Mooltrikona it
is bereft of its auspicious effects by one fourth. It is half beneficial in its own sign.
Its beneficence is one fourth in a friendly Rasi. In an equals Rasi one eighth of
auspicious disposition is useful. The good effects are nil in debilitation, or enemys
camp. Inauspicious effects are quite reverse with reference to what is stated. (59-60)
Comment: Accordingly to majority view, here Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Chandra are
taken as auspicious planets and can give beneficial effect of 100% in exaltation, 75%
in mooltrikona, 50% in own sign, 25% in friendly sign and 12.5% in neutral sign. And
there is 0% beneficial effect if these planets are in debilitation or enemy house. For the
remaining planet (sun, mars, Saturn, rahu and ketu) the inauspicious effects may be
taken in reverse order; 0% inauspicious in exaltation, 12.5% in mooltrikona, 25% in
own sign, 50% in friendly sign and 75% in neutral sign and there is 100% inauspicious
effect if these planets are in debilitation or enemy house.
We better understand with the practical chart for this so that the basic idea given by
the sage may be understood properly. While tabulating the details rahu-ketu are also
included as per desachaar.

also inauspicious. Add six Rasis to Vyatipat to know the position of Parivesh. It is
extremely inauspicious. Deduct Parivesh from 12 Rasis is to arrive at the position of
Chap (Indra Dhanus), who is also inauspicious. Add 16 degrees 40 minutes to Chap,
which will give Ketu (UpaKetu), who is a malefic. By adding a rasis to UpaKetu, you

Calculations of Gulika:
Translation:
The portions of days Sun etc. up to Saturn denote the periods of Gulika and such
others. Divide the day duration (of any week day) into eight equal parts. The
eighth portion is without Lord. The seven portions are distributed to the seven Grahas
commencing from the Lord of the week day known as seven Kaala. Whichever
portion is ruled by Saturn, will be the portion of Gulika. Similarly make the night
duration into eight equal parts and distribute these, commencing from the Lord of the
BPHS Ch-2 29

th
(by) week. Here again, the eighth portion is Lord-less, while Satrun part is Gulika.
Sun part is Kaal, Mars portion is Mrityu, Jupiters portion is Yamaghantak and
Mercurys portion is Ardhayama or Ardhaprahar. These portions are giving clear result
as per their names. ||66-70||
Comment:
The simple way to calculate Gulika is the 8
th
part of the Dinman means total day time
between sun rises to sun set and then of Ratriman means total night time between
sun set and sun rise. Here the Gulika portion begins from the end of 7
th
part and
beginning of 8
th
part for day. For example if dinmaan is of 12 hours for Sunday then
divide it by 8 = 12/8 = 1 hours; now if we multiply this by 7 we shall get the beginning
part of Gulika which is 1 * 7 = 10 and ends at 12. Now if we suppose the sun rise
at 6.00 AM then the gulika will starts at 16 PM and will end at 18.00 PM the 8
th
part
of dinman. Now for Monday the Gulika part will start from 6
th
, then for Tuesday 5
th
so
on and so forth. Now consider the ratrimaan where 8
th
part will be reckoned from the
5
th
day from normal day in chronological order and therefore the 8
th
part of the Gulika
will begin from the 3
rd
for Sunday, 2
nd
for Monday etc. so on and so forth. Suppose the
ratrimaan of Sunday is 12hrs and sun set is at 18.00 then Gulika will begin at 1 * 3
= 4 and ends to 6 hrs (4 + 1 hrs) from sun set means 10 to 12.00 midnight.
Consider in the above chart-1 of Mahadev where the birth is at 22.07 and is Tues day
means the 5
th
day there from is Saturday i.e. 1
st
parts belongs to Gulika. The length if
night is 12.21.31 (18.48.02-6.26.31) and length of each part is 12.21.31/8 = 1.32.40
hrs. Now we tabulate findings of parts (shtula- round about calculation) for better
understanding.

The degree, ascending at the time of start of Gulikas part (as above), will be the
longitude of Gulika at a given place. Based on this longitude only, Gulikas effects for a
particular nativity are lasting.
Comments:
Gulika lagna for the above example at 18-48-20 PM i.e. starts time of gulika part will be
18Kumbha 42.38. It is noteworthy that at the sun set, the degree of sun will be the
degree of ascendant, so the Gulika lagna will be 18 Kumbha 42.38.
Special Notes from web edition: Ardhaprahar, Yamaghantak, Mrityu, Kaal and Gulik
are the 5 Kaal Velas, suggested by Maharishi Parashar. The day duration, according
to altitude, is divided into eight equal parts. The eighth portion is unlorded. The first
portion is allotted to the weekday Lord. Other portions follow in the order of weekday
Lords. We consider 5 portions of Grahas, ignoringthat of Candr and ukr. The portions
of Srya, Mangal, Budh, Guru andani are, respectively, called Kaal, Mrityu,
Ardhaprahar, Yamaghantak and Gulik. In the case of night the durations, or 1/8
th
parts
are allotted in a different order. The first portion goes to the Grah, ruling the 5
th
weekday Lord, counted from the day in question. The others follow in the usual order.
Here again, the 8
th
part is Lord-less. The portions of Grahams from Kaal to Gulik are
the same in nomenclature in the night also. Keeranuru NataRaja of Jatakalankaram
(Tamil version) gives signs of dignities for these UpaGrahas and Gulik etc. (UpaGrah &
Gulik etc.: Exaltation, Debilitation, Swakshetra (own sign)) Dhoom: Simh, Kumbh,
Makar; Vyatipat: Vrischik, Vrishabh, Mithun; Parivesh: Mithun, Dhanu, Dhanu;
Indrachap: Dhanu, Mithun, Kark; UpaKetu: Kumbh, Simh, Kark; Gulik-Kumbh;
Yamaghantaka- Dhanu; Ardhaprahar- Mithun; Kaal- Makar; Mrityu-Vrischik. From Sun
to Saturn no one is exalted in the above-mentioned exaltation signs, nor debilitated in
the above-mentioned debilitation signs. Out of the 5 Kaal Velas, viz. Gulik etc., four
except Kaal (related to Sun) have their own rasi system in the respective rasi, ruled by
their fathers. Gulik, son of Saturn, has Kumbh, as his own sign. Gurus son,
Yamaghantak, has it in Dhanu. Ardhaprahar, Budhs son, is in own rasi, if in Mithun.
Mrityu, son of Mangal, has Vrischik, as own Bhava. It is not known, why Kaal, a son of
Surya shifted to Makar, a rasi of his brother (Sani), leaving his fathers Simh.
Obviously, Sani has given his Mooltrikona to his son Gulika, while he gave Makar
(asecondary rasi) to his brother Kaal.

Calculation of Pranapad.
Translation:
Multiply the birth time or given time in ghati by 4 then if pala is more than 15 then
divide it by 15 the devider be add to ghati arrived. This resultant rasi be divided by 12
if more than that and the remainder value in degree taken. Convert the given time into
Vighatis (multiply ghati by 60) and divide the same by 15 or multiply by the remainder
we arrived at. The resultant Rasi, degrees etc. be added to Sn, if he is in a Movable
Rasi, which will yield Pranapad. If Sn is in a Fixed Rasi, add 8 rasi (240 degrees)
additionally and, if in a DualRasi, add 4 rasi (120 degrees) in furtherance to get
Pranapad. The results of this pranapada lagna are given hereinafter chapter
separately.
Comments:
Capitulate this by example will be more liked. In the example Chart-1 (Mahadev) is
BOD 04-09-1956; TOB 22.07.00 (39.15.09 in gati-pal); POB Valsad 072E54 and
020N37, Aynamsa 23.15.23 (CP); VD Venus up to 10-06-1970.
Here birth ghati is 39.15.09 say 39.15 and Sun at 4R-18.50.57.
Ghati 39 is multiplied by 60 = 2355 divided by 15 = 157 divided this by 12 = 13.08 =
1.08 = 30.08; now add this to the sun degree of Leo i.e. fixed sign =
120+18.50+240+30.08 = 408.08 = 48.08 = 18 Vrishabha 08 is the pranapada lagna.
This is round about not taking the decimal in calculations.
