This is your first time in an online class, but DO NOT worry! You will have plenty of HELP around the computer lab. If you need any help during this class ask any of the volunteers, older students, or the teacher! You can also send me an e-mail anytime at kknoblau@emich.edu In this online class you will... learn what a polygon is learn to name a polygon based on the number of sides it has

What is a polygon?!

Practice creating the polygons on an online geoboard! We will also practice them in class with the actual geoboards and rubber bands. Click on the "Geoboard Fun" below to go to the geoboard app and try to make each polygon listed above. (Triangle, Square, Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon) Geoboard Fun!

Polygon Song!
Next, watch the "Polygon Song" video below that will help you remember the names of some of the polygons.

Equal Parts or Not?

You are now a polygon expert! Great job on your hard work. I would like to know how well you can share these shapes. Let's say that you need to split the shape to share equally with some of your friends. We will practice the different ways that we can split the shapes into equal shares. First watch this video below to learn about equal and not equal parts.

Equal Parts Practice

After you have watched the video, now it's time to play with what you know. Click on the "Equal Parts Game" button to play the game. Then, print out and complete the "Equal Parts Worksheet". You can turn this worksheet into me in the classroom.

Polygon Quiz
Now it's time to check what you know by clicking on "polygon quiz" and answer the questions with what you have learned. If you are struggling on the quiz, it's ok just return above to the videos to check anything you may have forgotten. You can do this! Good Luck!! Polygon Quiz

Standards
Math Common Core Standards: 2nd Grade: Reason with shapes and their attributes. 1. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. (Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.) 2. Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them. 3. Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. Technology Standards: Use a variety of digital tools (e.g., word processors, drawing tools, simulations, presentation software, graphical organizers) to learn, create, and convey original ideas or illustrate concepts. Understand that technology is a tool to help him/her complete a task, and is a source of information, learning, and entertainment.
