Amanda Thomas Nutritional Science 485 Evidence-Based Project 11/13/2013 a) The question that I was trying to answer in this

evidence based project was for women what is the relationship between developing cancer and there sleeping patterns? Sleep is a very important aspect of a person life just as eating healthy and exercising are. Most people do not see it this way because of their busy lifestyle and putting others needs before their own. What people dont realize that in the long run they are putting themselves at risk for sleeping disturbances such as insomnia and some types of cancers. Talking to a patient about their sleeping patterns and ways they could just get a few extra hours of sleep a week could help to decrease their chance of developing sleep disturbances and cancer. It is also important to let the patient know that a healthy lifestyle should not only just include eating healthy and exercise but getting the proper amount of sleep. At the same time let them know that not everyone is the same and make this healthy lifestyle unique to them because they are the only ones that truly know there body. b) Luo J, Sands M, Wactawski-Wende J, Song Y,Margolis KL. Insomnia is a common sleep disturbance in women. They also found a significant association between higher insomnia and nonobese women had a higher risk of developing thyroid cancer. During a follow up of the patients that participated in the Womens Health Initiative study 295 thyroid cancer cases were identified. It would be interesting to see if researchers would find the same results in women who are not postmenopausal. Two out of the three articles did find a connection in their research study between sleep disturbances and cancer. These articles show that there is a connection between a persons sleep disturbance which includes sleeping patterns and insomnia and different types of cancer but more research needs to be done to understand the biological mechanism behind this.
