Presidents Report
By Bob Nash
JoAnn and I had the distinct honor of attending the funeral of Kathy Confer on October 10th. Kathy was easily 50% responsible for the success of the NSRA Michigan Safety Team which her husband Dick steered for many years. Her funeral in Fenton was attended by many friends, about 40 of which brought out their cars on a pleasant sunny day to cruise with her one more time. Rest in peace Kathy. Please join me in welcoming our new directors. Karen Plopan and Art Socher are newly elected and Dennis Peters is returning for another stint. Many thanks to outgoing directors Don McKinnon and Rich Pickens for their dedication in steering the club in the right direction. Its difficult to describe in a few words how effective and pleasant you both were to work with. The Christmas brunch was a complete success. The break from our traditional party was well accepted and enjoyed by all. Some of the highlights were the special apron presented to Karen SMOKEY Plopan, by Sandy Kiser and the Rodder of the Year to Kurt and Sandy Kiser, selected and presented by the Reillys. Excellent choice and well deserved ROY (plural). Those with computers might want to check out the pics on our web site. And finallyAn eye doctor told his Asian patient that he had a cataract.

Long Time Members, Bob and JoAnn Nash

Dan Donaldson at work and became friends because they had similar interests and cars under construction. Don told Bob about this new car club that was forming. His procrastination ended after Don (already a member) told him that Motor State was going to cut off membership at one hundred and they were pretty close. In late 1976 Bob joined Motor State Street Rods. About that time their first 34 Chevy coupe rolled out of the two car garage in Redford. The 34 Coupe is a very active member. Theres plenty of times she pushes Bob to get it in gear! Bob and JoAnn started cruising in that first Chevy coupe to MSSR sponsored cruise nights at places like Westborn Shopping Center, Farrells Ice Cream, Ford Twin Towers and others. About 1989 that Chevy coupe with small jump seats in the back was getting a little tight for the kids so the red 34 Chevy Towne Sedan hit the streets. Little known fact; it took three cars to make one nice sedan. The 34 Chevy Towne Sedan

Next up in our continuing reintroduction of long term members is Bob and JoAnn Nash. As all of you know, Bob is our current Club President and arguably one of the best being responsible for a resurgence in the Club and growth in membership. Before getting into the MSSR connections further, a little background on his lifelong interest in cars. In 1965 Bob moved to Detroit from Pittsford, N.Y. without knowing a soul, just to be in the epicenter of cars. Cadillac hired him and he was assigned to the Engine Test and Development group. At that time you could still walk the streets of Detroit so he lived at the Clark Park YMCA on two occasions and frequently walked the four blocks to work. After one year at Cadillac, the Navy and Vietnam called and Bob spent two years in the South Pacific. After his return to the good old USA, he had to do some soul searching and decided to return to Cadillac in 1968 (the other option was to return to New York). In Bobs words, Cadillac Engineering was a fascinating place to work because of its small size and it was relatively easy to touch many areas of the car and recognize your work in the final production version of the cars. Bob said he was fortunate to met and married JoAnn in 1970. Fortunate because JoAnn has always let him go his own way with the cars and she adjusted to Bobs interests. In the early 70s Bob met Don Richter and

Bob went to meetings in Everett Rezendes basement by himself while JoAnn was a full time mother to their two children. Bob can recall meetings at Wendys and the Ford Glass House. Fords huge auditorium dwarfed the one or two rows of seats they used gross over kill but surely appreciated. Now, after many years, the Gardner Westcott club house feels like home to Bob and JoAnn. Bob also recalls the initial difficulty fitting into the crowd since most of the members were Ford employees or knew each other from the West side car scene. That also bothered JoAnn and slowed down her involvement in the club. Years later the clique was something they all joked about. By that time Bob and JoAnn were well into the swing of things. With their experience Bob will tell newer members that one of the best ways to get to know other members is to sign up for a road trip. Great advice and most will attest, a fun way to have fun and enjoy a club activity at the same time. While JoAnn and Bob worked at fitting car activities and family activities together, JoAnn gradually became more involved with the club. Its easy to see that she now

They kept the 34 sedan about ten years before selling it to a woman in Milan who recently reminded them that she has owned it longer than they did and the car still looks the same as when Bob built it. That car was followed up with the Nash Lafayette which they bought on impulse for obvious reasons. A Nash for the Nashs.

Bob drove it home on the shoulder of the road with one wheel brakes. The odometer showed 54,000 dry, southwest miles and now has more than that as a street rod. The Nash was a much better car to start with than any of his other projects. Continued on Next Page

2013 Rodder of the Year

The tradition of naming the Motor State Street Rodder of the Year took place at the annual MSSR Christmas Party. The 2012 Rodder of the Year, Phil and Anne Reilly had the distinction of selecting the 2013 selection and named Kurt and Sandy Kiser as their pick. 2013 Motor State Street Rods Rodder of the Year, Kurt and Sandy Kiser have kept the club well in the black financially during his tenure as treasurer. There is no flying in the dark with the finances in Kurts capable hands. Sandy has always been a strong supporter of the activities of Motor State with hands on assisting at each and every event making the club that much better. Kurt showing the award for the cameras

If you know Bob, you know he likes the odd ball cars and using junk yard (road tested) parts that get the job done. Bob like the challenge of building safe cars the old school way. Speaking of safe, Bob and JoAnn have served as NSRA Safety Inspectors for a number of years and offer their services to MSSR members helping to keep the rest of us safe. Over the years Bob has served on the Motor State Board as a Director in 1983 and 1984 (2yrs), Treasurer 1985 and 1986 (2yrs), V.P. in 1987 and 1988 (2yrs), and our current President since 2009 (6yrs). That is 12 years of service to MSSR and the clock is still ticking. In the early days, MSSR put on a ton of car shows and swap meets and Bob really enjoyed chairing the swap meets at Eddie Edgar Arena with Mike Kruse, Carl Kilpella and others. Today, JoAnn and Bob most enjoy the driving events, which have led them to host trips to Colorado, Vermont, Crusin the Coast, Syracuse Nationals and a few fall color tours. Whats better than seeing a colorful line of cars in your windshield or mirror and spending time with your friends? Today, many of their closest friends are car people. The cars are a hobby that acts as a catalyst to meet and enjoy some really fine people. And we are glad that Bob and JoAnn joined Motor State.

This was a popular pick as both have done a lot for Motor State Street Rods this year. Kurt as we all know serves as the Treasurer of the club and has set a process in place that keeps all of the Board and Club Members well informed of the standing of the finances of the club plus develops accurate forecasts so spending can be controlled and monitored by the Board. These forecasts

Great choice Phil and Anne, you picked a winner this year as our number one Rodders of the Year and congratulations to Kurt and Sandy and thanks for all you do for our great club.

New Members Pam and Sterling Matheson

With the addition of Pam and Sterling Matheson and a second couple coming up next, Motor State Street Rods has now become an international organization since they reside and are proud citizens of Canada. The membership first met this great couple a few years back at Kalamazoo through Gary Lazette and we have renewed the friendship each year at the Nats North. Without help from Sterling and a spare part inventory he carries in the coupe, Russ Demers would still be stranded in Kalamazoo when he had a module go south on his Model A. Sterling just reached in the box and gave one to get Russ back on the road. Pam got her initiation to MSSR through the games at Kalamazoo when she volunteered to help with the kids at our annual sponsorship in support of the NSRA. Both were born in London Ontario and attended high school in London as well. Pam has only lived in London but Sterling also lived in Toronto when he was in his late teens. They met through a mutual friend (Pam was dating his friend and dropped him when she met Sterling). Sterling has always been interested in cars since he was a young teenager and Pam got the bug when she started dating him. We would spend most weekends in the summer at a race track in a small town called Sparta. He would drag race whatever car he had at the time and he bought and sold cars quite often. If there was a strange car in the laneway (thats Canadian for street) when they were dating, she just told my parents "It's O.K. Sterling just bought another car". They have two daughters... Trisha is 35 and has an 11 year old step daughter (Shayla) and a 22 month old daughter (Ava). Cindy is 33 and has a 9 year old daughter (Robyn) and a 5 year old daughter (Lauryn). Sterling is a retired elevator mechanic but is doing handyman work for a company called Over 55 and some work on his own through word of mouth. Pam is retired from pharmacy work after 26 years and is working part time at a daycare in a gym and babysitting Ava full time. They both really enjoy attending car shows such as Kalamazoo and Back to the Bricks in Michigan and attend several shows annually close to home (Bothwell, Zurich, Waterford and or course the Plunkett (Fleetwood Country Cruizin) show and have done so for many years. They attend 2-3 cruise nights per week and at least 1 car show every weekend somewhere. They have owned the 34 Chevy for just about 20 years and don't have too much time to build any others right now. They have owned up to 60 vehicles (muscle cars as well as hot rods) over their life together. They even built their own 2 1/2 car garage by themselves so that Sterling could be in our own yard working on cars instead of renting a shop elsewhere. Pam use to have a 1932 Ford 2 door coach that I drove to work on a daily basis weather permitting, and chauffeured weddings in. Sterling had a 1934 Hudson Terraplane that he spent many hours working on over the course of 9 years and just couldn't get it completed before giving up on it and selling it. They had a couple of years with no hot rod to drive but then found the 34 in a dairy barn and just had to have it. It took Sterling a few months to clean up, restore and make it run like a top. The rest is history. While the car hobby is their main interest in the summer, they do take break from car stuff to enjoy a family vacation every July with Pams family on Manituolin Island camping for a couple of weeks. This will only change once her parents are unable to do the drive with their camper, which might be sooner rather than later as they are 83 and 85 years old. When that time comes then they plan to attend the Syracuse Nationals in July. They are also Ontario reps for the Right Coast Association, and have been for the past 7 years or so. They approached them because they heard that Pam and Sterling were very much involved in the car hobby industry on a personal level. They do their best to promote Right Coast in our area. Pam and Sterling, welcome to Motor State, we are proud to say we have a couple that really enjoy this hobby.

New Members Dot and Steve Perkins

Suddenly there has been a shift in the geography of Motor State Street Rods with the addition of Dot and Steve Perkins from Fowlerville Michigan. Yes, the city of Fowlerville can now boast that it has more members from Motor State living there than any other city in the United States and Canada. And to put the icing on the cake, the next couple that we are introducing is also from Fowlerville so the city fathers need to add our logo to the Fowlerville welcome sign. Life did not start out in this wonderful city for this couple however, Steve was born in Highland Park and Dot was raised in Detroit. Steve is a product of Redford High School and Wilbur Wright Vocational School while Dot graduated from Cody High School. Before moving to Fowlerville, they spent time in Detroit and Livonia. A mutual friend is responsible for this couple being together. The rest is history as Steve and Dot have raised six children, four of them girls and two boys through the years and now have eleven grandchildren to keep them going non stop. Support for this family came from working at Novex Tool and Federal Screw Works over the years. Like a lot of us the interest in cars started a long time ago, for as long as we can remember. Their favorite car activities include Cruising and favorite events and shows include the Woodward Dream Cruise and Thursday night shows, especially the ones that are free. Most of us have met this couple at Kalamazoo and their red 1960 Chevy Impala with air bags and flame throwers. This very nice custom has been named Nervous Breakdown Steve and Dot, welcome to Motor State where fun with cars, family and friends is just not a motto.

New News from the MSSR Board

In an effort to hold costs down for our members and to keep membership dues at minimal levels the board has taken many steps to keep the cost low. The board has zeroed in each and every aspect of what our club expenses are as each year the line items increase just as our home budgets also climb and we eliminate non essential items. We had already eliminated the PO Box to save money in 2013. Several items that came under the microscope in 2013 were our insurance cost, our newsletter cost, our photo album cost, web site cost and a whole lot of various miscellaneous costs. For example, newsletter printing and mailing costs are close to 10% of our annual budget and we have passed some of the cost to those requiring paper copies during 2013. In 2014 this will continue as we explore even more ways to save on the printing costs. The Board has found a company in 2013 that provided low cost printing and in 2014 Gary Lazette jr. has stepped up to provide a donation of his service in getting the printing of the newsletter to you. Stay tuned for more on this item. The second item we have examined it the photo albums which attribute to 14% of our budget. In the future we are working on putting all the photographs on line on a free web site so you can view as desired plus to hard copy a select few photos and place in an album for pass around as desired. You can now view the first edition of the site at and even order prints for your own use. https://motorstatestreetrods.shutterfly.com The third item is our liability insurance but at this time, there is very little that can be done to limit this cost which is 25% of our budget. Without this insurance we could be liable in a court of law. Even with these actions, the dues can no longer be maintained at 2013 levels so you will see an increase in the rate going into 2014. These actions were not taken lightly by your board and ask for your understanding.

New Members Wayne and Doris Bowers

And if one more from Fowlerville was not enough, we got two new members who can brag about being long time residents of that fair city. Wayne and Doris Bowers had interesting beginnings in that Doris was born at her grandparents home in Fowlerville Michigan. Waynes beginning happened just up the road in Durand Michigan. Both attended Fowlerville Community Schools and met in Junior High School in the th th 7 and 8 grades (and I love this part as Doris describes it) when Wayne came to th town school from country school in the 8 grade. Wayne has a long list of cities he has lived in from Fowlerville, Goodrich, Howell, Durand, Owasso, Norfolk, Virginia and Key West Florida. Doris has lived in Fowlerville, Howell and Owosso. Wayne and Doris helped the world population by bringing two girls, Shari and Pamela along with six grandchildren, Ashley, Heather, Jennifer, Rebecca, Haylee and a lone boy, Michael into this world. Wayne is retired from being an Owner/Operator driver hauling steel for Bowers Trucking Company and Doris is retired from her former employment as a Secretary at the Kreeger Elementary School in Fowlerville. Wayne got the car bug early in life when he drove his Dads 37 Ford Pickup at 9 years of age. When he got his drivers license, his interest in cars took off and he purchased his first older model car, a 1941 Chrysler. He purchased a 37 Ford as a second car to use in 1961 and never got rid of it while always buying older cars, but keeping some. You can find Wayne and Doris at local communities cruise nights and on the streets driving the 37 which is a favorite activity for the couple. Favorite shows include Back to the Bricks in Flint and the NSRA Northern Nationals where we met this couple this year as they joined in the MSSR Activities there.

Wayne and Doris, welcome to Motor State Street Rods, enjoy the cruising with us.

New Members Cheryl and Paul Martin

On page 4 we introduced you to our first Canadian Members or were they the second because we got two great member families in the deal as Cheryl and Paul Martin joined in lock step with the Mathesons. Along with the Mathesons, Paul and Cheryl were at Kalamazoo and joined us in the fun we have there each and every year. Cheryl joined the other ladies in assisting at our game activities that we host there every year. Paul and Cheryl met at a dance on Valentines Day in 2004 began their married life on December 20 2006. Paul is a retired certified automotive and truck mechanic and welder who during his career always had a keen interest in cars both drag racing and hot rods. Before they were married they purchased a 1930 Model A which Paul took down to the frame and has been full re-built. They A has been painted purple and is now at the interior stage of the build and hopefully will be completed in 2014. While the Model A was under construction they missed their friends and the action at the car shows both national and local cruises. To fill the gap they purchased a 1938 Chevrolet two door sedan in the interim until the Model A is completed and this is the car that we saw at Kalamazoo. Some of us have small shops, some medium in size and Paul has a large shop where he can be found most days happily working on the cars out there. We mentioned the Model A but Paul actually has several others in different stages of completion. Besides the cars, the couple also enjoy boating, travelling and family times. Family times in 2013 included a family Open House on Pauls November 23rd birthday and we send along our best wishes to Paul on this event. Cheryl began her career as a school teacher but after having 3 small children decided to enter the business world. In 1986 she opened a retail franchise frozen food store called M&M Meat Shops in St. Thomas Ontario. For all of us south of the Canadian border, M&M Meat Shops are a highly recognized brand and a place to shop for quality meats. Cheryl is still working there with her daughter as the manager. Unfortunately we do not have a picture of their car but will remedy that as soon as the ice and snow disappears. Paul and Cheryl are happy and excited to be part of your car club and that works both ways. Motor State is happy to add this Canadian couple to our membership list and look forward to having you at any of our events.

New Printing Supplier for our Newsletter

A huge MSSR thanks goes out to Gary Lazette as in the son of Audrey and Gary Lazette for stepping up and providing Motor State with the color printing that you so demand in your newsletter. As you all know, we have struggled over the years to provide a decent quality newsletter to our members at a cost the membership could afford. This has not been easy and we have had to resort to commercial printing at a cost we had to pass on to the membership. Recently Gary mentioned the problem to his son and we now have a printer who will do the work for us. We encourage our members to call Gary for any printing needs you may have, from business cards to large brochures. Thank you Gary.

New Members Jack and Mary Ketchum

Wow, we need to establish a central office in Fowlerville/Howell area to make signing up for membership in Motor State easier for all the residents of this area. Howell has provided one more great couple to our club when Jack and Mary Ketchum signed up. And to put the icing on the cake, they are into Ramblers which we all know turns our heads every time we spot one at a local cruise night. Jack is heavy into drag racing a Rambler with his son. Speed and Ramblers may not be two things we think of together but we like speed and we like Ramblers so the two together makes us smile. Jack and Mary both began life in Detroit just like a lot of our members. Jack is a graduate of Redford High School while Mary got her education at Benedictine in Detroit. The both meet at Richards Drive-In which was the home of the California Twinburger which measured a whopping 5 x 8 . And we think there are big burgers today. Like a lot of us, Jack became interested in cars at a very early 12 years, probably the reason he was at Richards Drive in when Mary caught his eye. And the car interest continues today where Jack enjoys drag racing as one of his most favorite car activities. In addition to racing they enjoy car shows and swap meets. Jack worked at Braun Engineering while Mary worked at both Lucent and AT&T. After their Detroit years the couple are now proud residents of Howell Michigan. Children number two with a total of three grandchildren. We are happy to have this fine couple as members of Motor State and look forward to cruising with them this summer.

Did you notice?

If you have not noticed by now, you need to have a doctor check you out but that makes 5, yes 5, new member families that have signed up with Motor State Street Rods in the past few months. We now have 10 more mouths to feed at our gatherings. Most of the new members were a direct result of seeing the fun we were having at Kalamazoo. We welcome the new members one and all and hope you enjoy being with us on any of the club events. Yes, as the motto says, we really do have FUN WITH CARS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS so join the party. We can hardly wait for the 2014 car events to start.

Cadillac Museum at the Gilmore

By Bob Nash

This past summer we talked about the

Gilmore Museum a few times. The growth of this museum is nothing short of fabulous. Let me tell you what Ive picked up about the planned Cadillac Museum that is so etched in my work history. On September 29, 2013 the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum & Research Center (CLCMRC) board of directors broke ground and commenced construction on the new Cadillac & LaSalle museum building. The building exterior design theme follows one recommended by General Motors for late 1940s and 1950s new Cadillac dealerships. The contractor estimates a completion date of June 30, 2014. (note: smells like a cruise date to me)

The museum is located in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Until the new facility is complete the museum displays will remain in the Carriage House located on the grounds. The Cadillac & LaSalle Club (CLC) founded the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum & Research Center (CLCMRC) in 1995. In addition to vehicles, the museum and research center collects and maintains technical information, historical documents, promotional and other related materials. The collection is an invaluable resource for use by CLC members, researchers, historians, car enthusiasts and the public in general. Bob Nash

NSRA Northern Nationals plus - Kalamazoo

By Rich Pickens
Again this year they came from hill and dale, freeways and back roads, fast and slow to gather for 3 days of fun at the NSRA Northern Nationals in Kalamazoo. Our membership was not to be outdone and had well over 25 cars present on the Fairgrounds to participate in one of the premier NSRA shows. Vendor count was good; the swap meet was crazy with over 600 spots sold so that all the old dusty parts and collectables could go to a new home. Car count was in the 2500 number as the grounds were filled to the brim. A good portion of members lined up on Thursday afternoon at the host hotel to get all the registration paperwork ready for the weekend and then quickly head over to the fairgrounds to capture our spot that has become the official home of MSSR for the past few years. Line up for Registration was time for eye candy and those parts in the swap meet with our name on them. But wait a second, JoAnn Nash put on the endless supply of coffee that was needed for fuel to go through the weekend and the cookie ladies had arrived and put a whole bunch of free samples on our table that demanded our attention. And for some reason, the cookie ladies just kept adding to the pile the whole weekend. So after each adventure into the swap meet or the car checking, we had to return for more cookies and coffee. Snack Time for Mr. Ballard find great conversations and humor there. On Friday night it was off to Brusters near the hotel for a small dinner party of some 40 club members which put the end of day smile on the faces to close out the day. On Saturday, big plans for our club since we are a host club for the Games Area and it was moved this year to a new bright sun filled area near the new building making for a wide open and giving the club visibility and exposure for Motor State. As always, Bill Carner coordinated the arrival and placement of the games he arranged which included a basketball game, a golf game and a cross bow shooting game which both young and old enjoyed. In addition to Bills arranged games Sandy Socher and Claudia Williams applied the tattoos to many young faces and arms. Basketball MSSR Style

Once secure it was off to the hotel that Sheila Sabo secures for us each year and a short wait for the Chili Dog and fixings dinner that the wonderful staff greeted us with this year. PS, they promised Sloppy Joes for 2014 just in case you are planning ahead. Bring on the Chilli Dogs

Our return from our latest adventure at the swap meet was met with 120 Hot Dogs that Russ Demers and Rich Pickens supplied to Karen Plopan for her amazing grilling for the troops. She has help from some of the MSSR Ladies wrapping the Dogs in buns and foil working as fast as they can to keep up with the demand of the members and guests who have gathered for the Shirley Miller Gourmet Lunch Break. The balance of Friday was spent checking out the cars and checking out the vendors inside and outside the buildings. The weather was a little on the chilly side with hardly any sun in the AM but it finally showed its brightness in the PM making for an enjoyable afternoon. Clean up help came from Ann Reilly, Sheila Sabo and Sandy Socher. The only thing they missed in the clean up was Danny Plopans shirt which took a direct hit of grease from all the grilling. Since we had so many long lost members and friends arrive most of the afternoon was spent talking old times and fast cars making for an enjoyable completion of the day. In addition we got a great participation from the weather man and nice sunny comfortable day was almost complete. We headed back to the hotel in order not to be late for another food experience arranged by the Rachel Ray of Motor State, Karen Plopan. Our Compound and Home in KZOO

Game coordinators included Phil and Ann Reilly, Pam Carner, Kurt and Sandy Kiser, Pete and Nina Deptula, Gary Lazette, Jim Sabo and a couple of our Canadian friends Pam Matheson and Cheryl Martin who also worked the golf game which confused the kids since they speak in Canadian and I or anyone else can understand the language. Great job one and all, it sure looked like the new location and the games were a big hit this year. All this work made everyone hungry so back to the Karen Plopan Mess Hall where today she worked on grilling close to 100 hamburgers provided by the Kisers. Sunday morning was another story, cool and damp with rain moving in so after breakfast we headed to the fairgrounds to pick up the canopies and see what would happen with the weather. It did not improve as a light sprinkle moved in. In the past with no technology we would of just set there but with the iphones and such, everyone looked at the radar and most decided to head home. The good news is we got two full and active days in at Kalamazoo, had a great place to stay, enjoyed some great food, and seen a lot of old long lost friends in addition to our friends at MSSR. On behalf of all the members would like to thank again all the ladies who helped with the food, the treats and the games and also the men who assisted with the games and help on the set up of the canopies and space at the Expo Center

IDIDIT Open House

And the rains came. Yes they did on October 5, 2013 and just in time for the IDIDIT Open House causing a much smaller turnout than in the past. We have had years at IDIDIT with ice on the windows but monsoon downpours sure put the damper on this event. We at least got to see Dwight and Millie Fackender before they became Florida bound, Phil Reilly and the Mustang, and Gary Lazette with the Buick. Other members in attendance sans car were Don McKinnon, Rich Pickens, Ben and Alice Suthers along with our newest members all the way from Canada, Paul and Cheryl Martin and Pam and Sterling Matheson and from Fowlerville Michigan, Steve and Dot Perkins brought along their Chevy. Most enjoyed the all you can eat pancake breakfast and some returned for the lunch inside the building. After the feed, we walked the show discovering a lot of really nice cars. Glad we did not have to judge the classes, especially the lead sleds where a couple of super looking Mercs caught our attention.

Whats Up in the MSSR Garages this winter

In Dearborn and Gregory Michigan we have heard for a few years now about some new machinery that was going to be on the streets soon. Well, Dennis Peters and Bob Nash somehow have not been the masters of time because soon is hopefully next summer. We are just glad that the Willys out of the Peters home should be a stunner as Dennis just says one more part, just one more part is all it needs. And in Gregory, the Nash garage is turning out or has been turning out a Willys truck for some time now. Ok guys, we are now impatient, so you got a 2014 deadline or else. Over in Westland, Don McKinnon is putting a Ford independent rear suspension under the coupe so that should be neat. Just do not burn down the garage Don, we do not like picking up the scorched remains like before. Ron Keeney is completing the 34 coupe and we hope to see it on the road by summer 2014. We keep hearing almost there so it should be a nice ride. And what would winter be without John Schumont tolling away in the garage producing something that his mind sees long ahead of all of us. John has sold his coupe which most know as a perfect proportion for a late 40s Ford Coupe. Yes, John has that perfect eye for design and he executes perfectly every time. So with the coupe gone, the cash was burning a hole in his pockets and he was off looking for a new project. John acquired a 55 T Bird, WHAT, yes a TBird. Not much to chop here but we all know that he has slammed to the ground as his number one goal and from there on, we have no clue since only Johns mind works in a direction most of us do not go to. We cant wait to see the Bird. In Canada, our new member Paul Martin is working to finish his Model A which we hope to see soon.

And, since Bob Nash wimped out he was not able to collect his new steering column give away, darn. Seen at IDIDIT Open House

MSSR Christmas Party

By Claudia Williams
On Sunday, November 24, 2013, fortythree members gathered at Fox Hills Country Club for a Christmas buffet luncheon that defied description! The day was typically seasonal with brisk temperatures and sunshine and a beautiful view of the golf course all neatly prepared for cooler weather. We have ten new members and four of them were in attendance: Wayne and Doris Bowers and Steven and Dot Perkins were welcomed with a warm round of applause. Nina welcomes Doris and Dot food and this was indeed superb! Food, Food and More Food (who were really surprised by this honor) for all they have done over the years for MSSR their continual and consistent participation justly merits this Award. Thank you from all of us! It was delightful to see Judy Stocke well enough to attend our luncheon. She graciously took time to eloquently thank all the MSSR Members for their encouragement and support throughout her illness. Both she and Jim were overwhelmed with gratitude for the concern and generosity of members and we continue to wish her good health and wonderful days ahead. Judy, we are Thankful Just to Have You

President Bob Nash led a short meeting and explained there will be no need for voting in December as Art Socher, Karen Plopan and Dennis Peters have volunteered to be our new directors. Mention was made that Ron Keeneys mother died and we extend our sympathies to him. A special thank you was extended to Karen Plopan for planning our holiday luncheon she always does a great job! Greetings for the President

We will be seeing them and more of our other new members when the cruise season resumes in spring at which time we will welcome Jack and Mary Ketchum (from Howell), Sterling and Pam Matheson (from London, Ontario) and Paul and Cheryl Martin )of Aylmer , Ontario). Its exciting to know that we have gone international! Great Table, Great People

After the formalities of our meeting, presentations were made. Sandy Kiser presented Karen Plopan with a unique MSSR logo apron in appreciation for her generosity of time spent grilling burgers and hot dogs throughout the major summer events in Columbus and Kalamazoo. Words just are not simply enough to express our gratitude. As we settled in for the feast, pictures were being taken by Jim Stocke, Rich Pickens and Karen Plopan. The buffet was beautifully laid out with cards describing each dish and we could have anything from breakfast (featuring omelets made according to your specific wishes), to brunch or lunch to a main dinner topped off with a variety of luscious deserts. The display was spectacular and made choices difficult best to take a little portion of everything that was offered. Next to cars, were well known for our ability to enjoy SMOKEYs New Apron

As the afternoon began to wind down, JoAnn Nash distributed gifts to those who had their numbers pulled by Judy Stocke a wide array of items were given: candy dishes, a bird bath bowl, Christmas ornaments, a car cleaning kit, NATS North posters, blankets, aroma sticks and Christmas candles. By 4:00 PM seasonal greetings were exchanged by all for a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. As Always when we gather for special events, we savor time spent together and feel deeply enriched by sharing friendship, laughter, fun and good times. Too Much Fun and Laughter Here

Phil and Ann Reilly presented Rodder of the Year Award to Kurt and Sandy Kiser

2013 MSSR in Review

Some will say 2013 was a bummer for us car people due to one of the strangest summers in history with wet cool weather in June and July giving way to a nice August and then cooling down way too early in September. Well as they say, it is not nice to mess with Mother Nature but it sure would have been nice to give us a little break and let us have what most know as the fantastic Michigan Summers. While we got off to a slow start for sure but experienced a lot of great events in 2013 starting early in January with the Milliken Garage Crawl headed up by Jim Stocke. We followed this one up at the end of January with a trip to the Cord Auburn Museum in Indiana. While still in winter mode, we headed out to the fantastic Lingenfelter Collection in Brighton Michigan in February. There were also three seminars during the winter to help keep us educated as well as the fantastic 60th anniversary of the Detroit Autorama featuring a lot of the past Ridler winners as well as the latest creation of John Schumont and Bob Hochins. With winter over and spring or what we loosely call spring in the Midwest came around, some of the members headed down to Wilmington Ohio for the first Ohio Mile of 2013. Others in Florida went to a Billetproof show in the sunshine while in Michigan the Billetproof show and Detroit Dragway Reunion was met with cold and damp weather. The weather finally cooperated for a MSSR Cruise to the Redford VFW. One really nice event that a few attended was the Back to the Bricks Promotional Tour which we may want to consider this year. As summer arrived, we did our annual trip to the Salem Flag Day which results in a lot of smiling faces. If you missed any of the summer meetings it is on you since the Reillys and Deptula events were great along with the Hines Cruise for the final summer meeting. NSRA events rounded out the summer with the Nats in Louisville and the Northern Nats in Kalamazoo. These are just a few of the good times at MSSR. Planning for 2014 is currently underway, if you have an event you would like to see included, just let us know. Summer Meetings Hines Park Cruise

NSRA Appreciation
Motor State received a nice thank you letter from Jerry Kennedy of NSRA thanking our club for participation in the games at the Northern Nats plus in Kalamazoo. Some will recall that the NSRA/Motor State relationship goes back a long time when we were one of the founding support clubs of the Northern Nats when they began in Detroit at the old fairgrounds. Here is what Jerry had to say.

Cruisin and Other Ramblings

By the Editor
What a nice surprise as summer was ending and fall was in the air and cruise nights became fewer and fewer Most had ended but the Wednesday Night St Roberts in Redford extended to mid October resulting in record crowds and food lines longer than trying to buy a new Apple product. 50/50 drawings prize of $500 were the norm and fresh Ice Cream for a dollar pack the rods in. Mark this for next year; they have established themselves as a place to be on Wednesday nights. Special thanks go out to Claudia Williams for writing the MSSR Christmas Party in this newsletter. We appreciate all the help we can get on the newsletter and welcome anyone to help in putting articles together. Thank you Claudia, you are hired, pay not so good however. My oldest daughter has most of the early family photos in her possession for some unknown reason and has a little fun bringing a few to me every now and then that show the early days making me feel a little old at times. Recently she brought over some pictures of my early cars and one thing that was different in those days was while they were still what we call hot rods today, they were also our daily drivers. Maybe getting old and not having to wheel a hot rod around daily is not a bad thing. When you receive this newsletter your Board will have changed as both Don McKinnon and myself have decided that it was time for us to step down and give someone else a chance to steer the club to bigger and better things. I am looking forward to changing seats at the club meetings and taking a lower key role in membership in the club. Both of us thank you all for your support during the past several years and most of all for your friendship and support in what we have done as members of the board. Please welcome Karen Plopan and Art Socher to the Board and Dennis Peters for his return. We are in good hands. There are multiple plans being developed for car events in 2014 and hope you sign up for many of them. In early June, several club members have developed plans for a trip to London Ont, Canada that is for the Plunkett/Fleetwood show. Others will be attending the Back to the Bricks promotional tour a week or so later. In July, the Goodguys Columbus Nationals are on the schedule for a lot of us and Back to the Bricks and Woodward will be on some August Calendars. Dont forget all the summer meetings and the Hines Park Cruise in the same month. In September, we will have a big presence at the NSRA Nats North as usual bringing at least 25 to 30 cars there. This one is a do not miss event. Check out the list of some of the coming events in the next column, we will see you there. And finally, seeing Judy Stocke at our Christmas Brunch made for a Great Thanksgiving, get well quick Judy we miss you and someone needs to keep Jim from getting lost along the way. God Bless
