Operating Systems
What is An Operating System?
The operating system is the most important program that runs on a computer. Every generalpurpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. For large systems, the operating system has even greater responsibilities and powers. It is like a traffic cop it makes sure those different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system.

Basic Features of Operating Systems

Seamless Distributed Computing: In an age of gigabit internal networks, it is striking that I can't simply tell my operating system that I have "access" to Machine A, B, and C on my network and to use their memory, their CPU, and other resources to ensure that my local computer remains always responsive. Seamless Distributed File System Databases: To be fair to Microsoft, Win FS has the potential to become this but it keeps being delayed. I should be able to create "cabinets" on my desktop (or anywhere else) in which I set a few parameters and from then on, files show up there as if they were any other folder Global User Management: When I activate Windows (or Mac OS) I should be given a unique account global account where my preferences and other key settings are stored along with any data I would choose to store there for an additional fee. Universal environments: Following #3, I should be able to have a universal user environment. If I go to a public machine, type in my User ID and password, it should then be able to pull my environment from Bwardell. Component Based operating systems: Part of the problem with Windows and MacOS is that the OS vendors make it hard for third parties to enhance the OS with their own code

The Three Categories of Operating Systems

Multiprocessing - An operating system capable of supporting and utilizing more than one computer processor. Below are some examples of multiprocessing operating systems. Multitasking - An operating system that is capable of allowing multiple software processes to run at the same time. Below are some examples of multitasking operating systems. Multithreading - Operating systems that allow different parts of software program to run concurrently. Operating systems that would fall into this category are:

What are desktop operating systems?

UNIX Unix was originally written in assembly language. Ken Thompson wrote B, mainly based on BCPL, based on his experience in the MULTICS project. B was replaced by C, and Unix, rewritten in C, developed into a large, complex family of inter-related operating systems which have been influential in every modern operating system.

OS X

OSX is a line of open core graphical operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Apple Inc., the latest of which is pre-loaded on all currently shipping Macintosh computers. OS X is the successor to the original Mac OS, which had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984. Unlike its predecessor, OS X is a UNIX operating system built on technology that had been developed at NeXT through the second half of the 1980s and up until Apple purchased the company in early 1997.

Linux Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was developed without any actual Unix code, unlike BSD and its variants. Linux can be used on a wide range of devices from supercomputers to wristwatches. The Linux kernel is released under an open source license, so anyone can read and modify its code. It has been modified to run on a large variety of electronics.

Google Chromium OS
Chromium is an operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed by Google. Since Chromium OS targets computer users who spend most of their time on the Internet, it is mainly a web browser with limited ability to run local applications, though it has a built-in file manager and media player. Instead, it relies on Internet applications (or Web apps) used in the web browser to accomplish tasks such as word processing.

Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows is a family of proprietary operating systems designed by Microsoft Corporation and primarily targeted to Intel architecture based computers, with an estimated 88.9 percent total usage share on Web connected computers. The newest version is Windows 8 for workstations and Windows Server 2012 for servers. Windows 7 recently overtook Windows XP as most used OS.

Comparing Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Chrome OS

Windows 8 will be launched in 2012, and with Windows 7 becoming the top dog on the OS market, is hard to believe that rival platforms will be able to make sufficient inroads in Windows territory to actually matter. The adoption of Mac PCs and Mac OS is a result of Apple's ability to grow well above the market average in the last 12 to 24 months, thanks to its ease of use from the user interface (UI) point of view and ease of integration with other Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and the existing Apple ecosystem of applications and programs," said Annette Jump, research director at Gartner. Linux OS is expected to remain niche over the next five years with its share below 2 percent because of the remaining high costs of application migration from Windows to Linux. In the consumer market, Linux will be run on less than 1 percent of PCs, as Linux's success with mini-notebooks was short-lived and few mini-notebooks are preloaded with it today, the company said. Gartner does not expect Chrome OS, Android or web OS to get any significant market share on PCs in the next few years. Analysts believe that to get any consideration as an alternative for a traditional PC, lighter OSs will first need to get strong positions on emerging client devices such as Web books and media tablets, the company added.

Overall Rating

Amazing Most programs either 4 Stars run on Mac or have a Mac counterpart, but a lot don't. Okay, not Everything runs on great. Windows, or it is a program specifically designed to imitate a Windows program. Not as great as 10.04 3.14 Stars

Linux

FREE!!!!!!

Nothing, Nothing, runs 4.5 Stars on Ubuntu or Linux. You have to find imitation programs or run Wine.
