    REQUIEM MASS FOR KENNETH SMITHIES Order of service 1.

    10:40: As guests arrive at the church, quiet organ music will be played 2. 10:55: The coffin arrives at the church. There are some short prayers in English said by the priest. Meanwhile, the organ continues playing. 3. 11:00: At the beginning of the service, the coffin is solemnly processed down the aisle with the priest and servers while the choir sings the Subvenite (Gregorian chant). 4. 11:03: Mass begins immediately while the choir sings the Introit and Kyrie from Giovanni Anerios Requiem 5. 11:10: Reading of the Epistle in English by a server (one of my brothers) 6. 11:12: The choir sings the Gregorian chant of the mass: Gradual and Dies Irae 7. 11:18: Reading of the Gospel in English by the priest 8. 11:20: Offertory: A motet (choir) or hymn (congregation) is sung 9. 11:30: Sanctus from the setting of Giovanni Anerios Requiem (Choir) 10. 11:35: Agnus Dei from the same setting (choir) 11. 11:40: Communion hymn: the Lord is My Shepherd (congregation) 12. 11:50: Sermon: in a Catholic service, this is given by the priest and may include a eulogy about Kenneth and his life. 13. 12:00: Blessing of the coffin (all in English). Each member of the congregation comes forward to sprinkle holy water on the coffin. Another hymn may be sung at this time. I suggest Fabers Theres a Wideness in Gods Mercy. 14. 12:10: The coffin is carried down the aisle, as my sister Bridget sings solo the words of the In Paradisum (Gregorian chant) n.b. 1: The Latin words in italics are essential prayers of the Catholic rite of burial. They are sung by the choir in either Gregorian chant or polyphony. The polyphonic Mass setting I have chosen (Anerio) is short and very beautiful. I shall make an order of service for the congregation and include the words and translation of these texts so that people can understand everything. n.b. 2: I have suggested hymns but you may choose any that you prefer. The Faber hymn was put to music by my great uncle Maurice who was a good friend of Kenneths.

    I have been generous with timings to take into account any unforeseen delays or more people than expected. At the graveside there are more prayers in English by the priest and the choir might sing something to end the service while the coffin is lowered into the grave. Please let me know if you have any queries. I would be happy to explain anything. Since I have been running my own choir for many years, I have done this sort of thing very frequently and am confident that this will be a beautiful and heart-felt service.
