Transition (topic and speaker): V. Detail your teams recommendations to the organization based on your research and knowledge from this class. 1. First off I would suggest that the Chemistry department work on upward communication. Based on the interviews and information from the class, we have come to decide on a few things that will help the Chemistry department with their communication. One if these are there needs to be a little bit more communication between Professors and faculty above them, because there tends to be things that they disagree on. In particular Dr. Malina had ideas on how to change the tenure program, something that the higher ups may want to consider. According to a study published in the International Journal of Human Resource Management workers in countries with small power distances are more efficient and open to talking to higher ups than workers in countries with small power distances. So we suggest that the University finds a way to make it more casual for the professors to bring up their ideas and bridge the power gap. 2. The other main problem that we noticed within the chemistry department was the lack of collaborating outside of work. It helps to develop good relationships with your co-workers because it helps with overall communication within an organization. One of the ways to do this is to mingle with your fellow workers. We suggest that maybe the department sets up more social gathering type of things that the department workers may actually want to attend. Things that are family friendly because many people within the department have families. Adding in social gatherings is something that we think will help the organization as a whole and will help keep the department on the same page. 3.
