3.1 General 3.1.1 Effective size is defined as the size of opening that will pass 10% by weight of the filter material. Uniformity coefficient is defined as the ratio of the size of opening that will pass 60% by weight of the filter material divided by the size of opening that will pass 10%, by weight, of the same sample. All material shall be new and unused.

Activated Carbon Activated carbon is a form of carbon that is activated by oxidation to develop a porous carbon structure. It is used primarily to remove chlorine from water. It should be noted that wet activated carbon depletes oxygen from air. Whenever workers enter a vessel containing carbon all precautions must be taken since dangerously low levels of oxygen may be encountered. The appropriate sampling and work procedures must be followed.

All granular activated carbon shall be acid-washed prior to shipment. All granular activated carbon shall comply with the following characteristics: U.S. standard series sieve size Carbon greater than a number 12 sieve size Carbon less than a number 40 sieve size Mean particle diameter range Uniformity coefficient (after backwashed & drained) Apparent density (prior to backwash) Abrasion number Moisture content Iodine number Surface area Pore volume Water soluble ash 12 x 40 5% by weight (maximum) 5% by weight (maximum) from 0.9 mm to 1.1 mm 1.8 (maximum) 0.44 gm/cu cm (min), 27.5 lb/cu ft 0.48 gm/cu cm (max), 30 lb/cu ft 70 minimum 2% by weight maximum 900 mg/gm minimum 1000 sq m/gm minimum 0.9 ml/gm minimum 4% maximum

3.8 Testing As an option, samples of all granular material can be taken from each batch in accordance with AWWA B100, AWWA B604 and ASTM D75. When this option is selected, they shall be tested in accordance with the following procedures, as a minimum, to ensure that all material is in compliance with this specification. When requested, the samples shall be sent to the purchaser. Acceptance or rejection of the shipment shall be based upon the material as received at its destination. Additional samples may be taken and analyzed upon receipt of the material. The quality of the media shall be determined by the following procedures: Activated carbon abrasion resistance apparent density iodine number moisture content particle size distribution pore volume surface area water extractables acid solubility sieve analysis specific gravity acid solubility specific gravity apparent density gravel shape acid solubility sieve analysis specific gravity AWWA B604 AWWA B604 ASTM D4607 AWWA B604 AWWA B604 ASTM C699 ASTM D3037 Food Chemicals Codex AWWA B100 ASTM C136 ASTM C188 AWWA B100 ASTM C127 AWWA B604 AWWA B100 AWWA B100 ASTM C136 ASTM C188

Technical Bulletin 6.09, Rev. 0 December 1998 4.0 Tower Packing
4.1 General Tower packing is a media that can be supplied as saddles, rings or spheres. It is used to provide intimate contact between vapour and liquid phases for effective mass transfer.

Figure 9-1: Tower Packing Media

4.2

Product Specifications The packing material shall be produced from virgin polypropylene material and shall be of a configuration that permits a maximum number of dripping points per cubic foot. The material shall be capable of operation in temperatures up to 180F. Tensile strength shall be between 4300 and 5500 psi, thermal conductivity shall be 1.3 BTU/hr.sq ft.F and modulus of elasticity 160,000 to 230,000 psi. The material shall have a density between 0.06 and 0.09 gm/cm. The packing shall posses a geometry that permits even spacing throughout the packing structure to effect a uniform distribution of both liquid and gas flows. The design should also make it possible for the packing to interlock or nest. The packing shall have superior wetting characteristics to prevent plugging or solids build-up on the packing surface and to enhance the mass transfer capabilities. Depending on the nominal size, the packing shall have a geometric surface area of 25 to 65 sq ft/cu ft and a void fraction when dumped greater than 90%.
