1. (a) What is KCL and KVL? Explain it clearly.


(b) For the circuit shown in the figure 1 determine the current through 6 ohms
resistor and the power supplied by the current source. [8+8]

2. (a) A 4-pole machine running at 1000 rpm has an Armature with 80 slots having
8 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 6 × 10−2 wb. Determine the
induced emf as a D.C generator. If the coils are lap connected. If the current
per conductor is 50 Amperes, determine the electrical power output of the
machine.
(b) Write the c.m.f equation of a D.C generator and derive it. [8+8]

3. (a) Explain about the working principle of transformer.


(b) Clearly explain about core type Transformer and shell-type transformer. What
are the main differences between them? [8+8]

4. (a) Define slip. Hence deduce the expression for frequency of Rotor current?
(b) Discuss in detail the Predetermination of regulation of an alternator. [8+8]

5. (a) Show that, for the full-wave rectifier, the ratio of rectification is twice that of
half-wave rectifier.
(b) A 230V, 60Hz voltage is applied to the primary of a 5:1 step down transformer
used in a bridge rectifier having a load of 900 Ω. If the diode resistance and
secondary coil resistance together has a resistance of 100 Ω, determine
i. D.C voltage across the load
ii. D.C current flowing through the load

iii. PIV of each diode
iv. ripple voltage and its frequency. [8+8]

6. (a) Draw the input and output characteristics of n-p-n transistor in common base
configuration and explain how they are obtained?
(b) In a fixed bias circuit using n-p-n transistor, find the operating point if VCC
= 24V, RB = 220kΩ, RC = 4.7kΩ. [10+6]

7. (a) Draw the circuit diagram for an monostable multivibrator using 555 timer and
explain its working with suitable waveforms.
(b) An astable multi is designed using 555 timer for a frequency of 5kHz. Deter-
mine the value of the capacitor needed using RA = RB = 10kΩ. Sketch the
waveforms at the capacitor and at the output. [8+8]

8. (a) Describe the process of Resistance welding in detail.


(b) A 20KW single phase, 220V resistance oven employs circular Nichrome wire
for its heating element. If the wire temperature is not to exceed 11270 C and
the temperature of the charge is to be 4270 C, calculate the size and length
of wire required. Assume emissivity and radiation efficiency are 0.9 and 0.6
respectively. What would be the temperature of wire when the charge is cold?

1. (a) Explain clearly about STAR-DELTA TRANSFORMATION.


(b) What are the dependent, Independent sources. Explain it clearly. [8+8]

2. (a) Derive the condition for Maximum Efficiency of a D.C generator.


(b) Write the motor principle and also write the significance of the Back e.m.f.
[8+8]

3. (a) Explain the principle of working of 1-φ transformer on no-load conditions.


Also explain the nature of no-load current.
(b) Explain how the equivalent circuit parameters can be obtained from open
circuit and short circuit tests. [8+8]

4. (a) A 2000V, 1-φ alternator was tested on open circuit and short circuit. The
details of which are as follows. A field current of 2.5a produced a short circuit
current of 100A. With open circuit, the same field current generated an e.m.f
of 500V. The effective resistance of the armature is 0.8 ohm. Calculate the
regulation at full load current of 100A.
i. At a power factor of 0.65 leading
ii. At a power factor of 0.65 leading.
(b) Write the condition for Maximum Torque under Running conditions and derive
it. [8+8]

5. (a) With suitable sketches, explain the concept of Fermi-level in intrinsic and
extrinsic semiconductors.
(b) In a p-type semiconductor, the Fermi-level is 0.3 eV above the valence band at
a room temperature of 3000 K. Determine the new position of the Fermi-level
for temperatures of
i. 3500 K and
ii. 4000 K. [8+8]

6. (a) How will you determine voltage & current amplifications, input & output
resistances from the characteristics of CB configuration?
(b) Derive the expression for collector current (IC ) in CE configuration in terms
of collector emitter leakage current (ICE0 ) and the base current (IB ). [10+6]

7. (a) Describe how analog signals are converted to digital signals using voltage to
time conversion method.

(b) An analog voltage signal whose highest significant frequency is 500Hz is to be
coded with a resolution of 0.1% approximately covering a range of 0 to 10V.
Determine the number of bits in the digital code, analog value of LSB, r.m.s
value of quantization error. [8+8]

8. (a) Describe various types of electric Arc welding processes. Explain why very
frequencies should not be used for dielectric heating.
(b) The power required for dielectric heating of a slab of resin of 150sq.cm in area
and 2cm thick is 200W at a frequency of 30MHz. The material has relative
permittivity of 5 and a power factor of 0.05. Determine the voltage necessary
and current flowing through the material. If the voltage is limited to 600V,
what will be the value of the frequency to obtain the same heating? [8+8]

room temperature are 0.36m2 /volt-sec and 0.17 m2 /volt-sec, respectively. If
the electron and hole densities are equal to 2.5 × 1019 /m3 , calculate the con-
ductivity of the material. [4+6+6]

6. (a) Define the symbols α, β with reference to the BJT configurations. Show that
how they are related to each other?
(b) What value of RB in the fixed bias circuit will just cause the silicon transistor
to be saturated, assuming β = 100 and VCE(sat) = 0.3V? [10+6]

7. (a) Draw the circuit diagram for R-C phase shift oscillator and identify the impor-
tant blocks of an oscillator from the circuit. What type of positive feedback is
incorporated in the circuit? Give the expression for frequency of oscillations.
(b) Derive the feedback factor for the circuit mentioned above. [10+6]

(b) A 200V d.c. series motor runs at 750 rpm when taking a current of 30A. The
resistance of the Armature is 0.5Ω and of that field is 0.3Ω. If the current
remains constant, calculate the Resistance Necessary to reduce the speed to
250rpm. [8+8]

6. (a) Explain the reasons for keeping the operating point of a transistor amplifier
at a fixed place in the transistor characteristics.
(b) For a fixed bias circuit using n − p − n silicon transistor, the following pa-
rameters are given: VCC = 12V, RB = 240kΩ, RC = 2.2kΩ. Determine the
co-ordinates of the quiescent point. Assume β = 50. [10+6]

7. What are the techniques that are commonly used in the conversion of analog signal
to digital one? Explain operation of any two of them with suitable block diagrams.

8. (a) Discuss about the electrostatic focusing of a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO).
(b) Explain the operation of a Time Base Generator of CRO with suitable circuit
