Methods:
AnticipatorySet:Whenthestudentsentertheclassroom,therewillbeafewexampleproblemsonthe board.Thedirectionswillstate:classifythefollowingpolynomials:monomial,binomialortrinomial Thisclasswillbeanintroductiontofactoringpolynomials.Wewillbeginclasswithvocabulary: monomial,binomial,trinomial,factorbygrouping,FOIL,greatestcommonfactor,etc. Iwillbeginwithdirectinstructiononwhatitmeanstofactorbycreatingashortlistofnumbersand theirfactors.WewillthenmoveintomonomialsandbinomialswhileweexploretheFOILmethod.In orderforstudentstobeabletobreakdownpolynomials,theyneedtounderstandtheFOILmethodto seehowthepolynomialwascreated.Thestudentwillbeprovidedwithafewexamplesontheboard whilehavingstudentshelpthroughtheFOILprocess. Thestudentswillthenbegivenafewpracticeproblemsontheirown.Theywillthenbechosento presenttheirsolutionsontheboard.Ifthereseemstobeaclearunderstanding,wewillgotheopposite waywiththepolynomialsandtrytobreakdowntheequationsintothesamesetuptheyhadbeforethey wouldFOIL.Nowwouldalsobethetimetoexplainfactorbygroupingandprovideafewexampled. Againtheywouldbegivenafewpracticeproblemstoworkthroughbothconceptsbutthistimeusinga partnerorsmallgroup(nomorethan4students).Aftercheckingin,thestudentswillbreakoffinto groupsof4or5andpracticethethreenewconceptsthroughplayingaroundtheworld.Eachgroupwill begiveeitheranequationthatneedstobeFOILedorapolynomialthatneedstobefactored.

AtthispointIwillhandoutthehomeworkassignmentandaskifthereareanyquestionsbefore dismissingtheclass.

AssessmentofStudent(s) Theobjectiveisforstudentstolearnhowtofactorusingmultiplemethods.Throughclasswork, homeworkandaquizattheendoftheweek,Iwillbeabletoassesstheirunderstandingandseewhich methodsworkbestforeachindividual.Basedonthemethodsthatseemtobemoreofastruggle,Iwill doaquickreviewtomakesurethatthestudentsareabletouseallmethodssuccessfully. SelfAssessment(Teacher) Iwillcheckinwithstudentsduringclassbywalkingaroundandobservingtheirprogress.IfInoticethat thereisacommonstrugglewithacertainfactoringmethod,Iwillknowtogobackandrevisethe lessonsforparticularmethods.Iwillalsobeabletomakenoteswhilereviewingtheirhomeworkand quizzestoseeifthereisastrugglewithinthegroup.
