Common Commands for Windows Common DOS Commands

Format format = formats the specified drive <filename> = searches the folder for the specified file
/switches /q = Quick: only rewrites address table usage dir /p or dir <filename> /s
/s = system: after format transfers system files
usage format c: /q CD cd = Change Directory
/switches \ = change to root dir
Chkdsk chkdsk = checks the volume for errors(For XP Recovery Console) .. = go to parent folder
/switches /r = repair usage cd.. or cd\ or cd <folder name>
/p = replaces system files
usage chkdsk /r DEL del = deletes specified file or folder
usage del <filename.xxx>
Scanreg scanreg = scans the system registry for errors(For ME or 98)
/switches /restore = restores backup registry VOL vol = displays the volume label for drive selected
/backup = backups current regisrty usage vol d:
/fix = rebuilds registry
The bootcfg command with the parameters listed below is only available
when you are using the Recovery Consol e The bootcfg command with
usage scanreg /restore bootcfg different parameters is available from the command prompt
/default Set the default boot entry.
IpConfig ipconfig = displays IP address info /add Add a Windows installation to the boot list.
/switches /release = releases current IP address info /rebuild Iterate through all Windows installations and allow the user to choose which to add.
/renew = renews config info /redirect [PortBaudRrate] | [useBiosSettings]
/all = displays all IP address info for all devices Enable redirection in the boot loader with the specified configuration.
usage ipconfig /renew all eg. bootcfg /redirect com1 115200
Special note: WinXP /2K listed above, for WinME & 98 use an Underscore instead of space. eg. bootcfg /redirect useBiosSettings
Example- WinXP: ipconfig /release all Win98: ipconfig /release_all
attrib Displays, sets, or removes the read-onl y, archive, system, and hidden
attributes assigned to files or directories. Used without parameters, attrib
displays attributes of all files in the current directory.
SFC SFC = Scans protected system files and verify versions +r Sets the read-only file attribute.
/switches /scannow = immediately scans the system files -r Clears the read-only file attribute.
/scanonce = scans the system volume on the next reboot +a Sets the archive file attribute.
Usage sfc /scannow -a Clears the archive file attribute.
+s Sets the system file attribute.
