Logos
DESCRIPTION Three different logos in the various logo styles that represent To & Fro Magazine. D AT E October 30, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS Adobe Illustrator OBJECTIVES Create a variety of new and original logos to fit a company image. Use only the tools of Illustrator. Set up a professional display for the company. Get feedback from outside sources. PROCESS For my first logo I chose to do a logo using strictly text. I aligned both lines of type because I liked the clean look. I made the word Magazine a lighter grey color to give the logo contrast. The second logo was a lot more difficult due to the background behind the text. I started with a grey square in the background and to give the image contrast I added a maroon triangle and lowered the transparency. I chose a bolder font to match the dynamic background. For the last logo I wanted a lighter look that wasnt so in your face. I started with a light brown box and added the white line for detail. The font was a lot softer, but still had a confident look. I chose to center align the logo and did not justify it because this looked more approachable as a logo.

Brochure
DESCRIPTION Design a brochure using an original logo and quality images for a company. D AT E December 7, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS Adobe InDesign and Photoshop OBJECTIVES Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images, one clipped and text-wrapped. Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. PROCESS I chose a vertical tri-fold brochure because I liked the sleek and simple look. I made the cover black and white because I wanted bold but professional. On the inside I kept the color palette white and gray and let the pictures be really attention grabbing. I wanted a lot of colorful images. I used the clipped image on the very first panel because I thought it looked inviting. I clipped it in Photoshop and used the effects to make the line clean and clear. To format the paragraphs correctly I added some paragraph styling to my text. At first they were just solid blocks of text, but once I added the formatting it was much more pleasing to the eye and easier to read. Overall I wanted the look to be simple and straightforward.

Lettterhead
DESCRIPTION For this project we were asked to design a new logo for a letterhead and business card. D AT E November 7, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS Adobe Illustrator and InDesign OBJECTIVES Use tools of Illustrator & InDesign to create a new logo and use on two stationery items. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learn simplicity by having watermarks and drop shadows light. Apply contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each piece. PROCESS I created this new logo as a text only logo. Once I had the logo I started my letterhead. I chose to left align the type because I like the white space. I like the contrast in the font sizes and font weight. I also added from the desk of in italics because it added a softness to the letterhead and personalized it. Initially the bottom was black, but I changed it to grey because it does not draw your eye as much as the black did. I wanted it to be subtle, not detract from the header.

Business Card
PROCESS At first I had the logo taking up almost the whole back of the card, but then I switched the background color from white to black, and then minimized the size of the text and I really liked that a lot more. It looked a lot less fun and a lot more professional. The other side I kept consistent with the left align theme and kept it really simple because that is the look this business would prefer.

Flier
DESCRIPTION Design an black and white flier to advertise for a graduate leadership conference. D AT E October 4, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS Adobe InDesign OBJECTIVES Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Use provided image and logo. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. PROCESS First, I created four sketches of different layout possibilities. Once I decided what I wanted, I used InDesign to format the text and images. I used a bold text to make the title stand out and gray rectangles to put the emphasis on the title and add contrast to the page. At first my body copy was large, but I lowered the pixel size to keep it small. I tried to make the eye flow from top to bottom and make the flier enjoyable to look at, but still informative. Adding white space to my flier allowed me to keep certain items that pertained to one another in the same area, and made it easier to read. The rectangles are repeated throughout the page, as is the text that is used. The clean lines in the images and text make the flier professional and clear.

Web Page
DESCRIPTION A webpage made using HTML & CSS to display the design process behind my logo. D AT E November 20, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS TextWrangler and Adobe Photoshop OBJECTIVES Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML + CSS + hex colors. PROCESS After inserting all of my text, I linked up my external CSS to my HTML document and began changing how the background curved and turned it into a straight angle because I thought it looked more professional. I then changed all of the colors of the text to black, gray, or white; I also changed the background color to contrast the font color. I then used the image tag to link my logo jpeg to the webpage and centered it to line up with the title To & Fro Magazine Logo at the very top of my page. I chose to keep the header and heading a sans-serif font and kept the body copy a serif font, which provided a good amount of contrast in the fonts. Padding is always really difficult to figure out, but managed to space things out just right and align things well.

Event Ad
DESCRIPTION A full-bleed ad that promotes a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner. D AT E October 10, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS/TOOLS Scanner and Microsoft Word OBJECTIVES Find, scan, and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word. PROCESS The idea for my advertisement came from my image. I found the image of the shoes first, and really thought theyd look great on a color page. Once I had successfully scanned my image, I was able to remove the background from each of the shoes and start placing them creating a repeating pattern. After that, I placed the event information, date, place, and time in a good proximity to one another. I came up with the idea for a price tag, which contrasted the bright shoes and told the reader exactly what this poster was all about. Microsoft Word has a lot of features I never knew about!

Imaging
DESCRIPTION Take a photograph and then crop and edit it appropriately in Photoshop. D AT E October 18, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS/TOOLS Adobe Photoshop and Canon Powershot Camera OBJECTIVES Learn basic photography skills. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. PROCESS I took this image outside of the library using a Canon Powershot. I took it with my husband Paul outside of the library just before sunset. Once I had the shot I wanted I pulled it into Photoshop and cropped it and changed the resolution to make an appropriate looking 6 x 6 photograph. After that I was able to desaturate the entire photo with the exception of Pauls eyes and his tie. I adjust the levels a tad to improve the highlights and shadows on the image and then applied a filter called Diffuse Glow.

Montage
DESCRIPTION Use the masks in Photoshop to blend at least two images together. D AT E October 23, 2013 COURSE + INSTRUCTOR COMM 130 Section 2 Julie Peterson PROGRAMS Adobe Photoshop OBJECTIVES Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Apply appropriate typography and typography principles. Choose good quality images and filters. Unify a piece with a consistent theme. PROCESS The first thing I did was crop the image of London to fit an 8.5 x 11 canvas. I then put the Union Jack image on top of the skyline image and added a mask. After that, I blurred the edges of the flag to make it blend nicely with the background image. I put the quote and the headline over the top of that flag using the sans serif and slab serif type. Lastly, I added a filter to the London image and blurred out everything except Big Ben, which pulls the viewers eye there.
