Topic No. 5: Discuss why it may be mistaken to only consider the positive aspects of Interpersonal communication and personal relationships.

In the modern society relationship and communication is an everyday life activity even now when I am typing this essay out I am communicating verbally to you. Interpersonal communication is the process of using messages to generate meaning between at least 2 people in a situation that allow mutual opportunities both speaking and listening. On the other hand a personal relationship is a relationship between the self. Personal relationships mean a relation between persons. In our studies, personal relationships refer to close connections between people, formed by emotional bonds and interactions. These bonds often grow from and are strengthened by mutual experiences. In this essay I will be discussing about the means of taking the negative aspects of Interpersonal communication and personal relationships into a count.

Firstly, concerning why people look at the positive aspects of interpersonal communication and disregard the negative aspects. There are a lot of people in our society who uses technology as a medium to communicate with one another. In the current generation we use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram,

very frequently. Using the technology as a means to communicate with one another does not help most of us in our social life. As a result, social media has played a large role in shaping the transformation of ways people communicate with one another. Just a mere decade ago people used to either meet for coffee, stop by one anothers house or pick up the phone and call, but modern society is a fast paced world where we want everything to be done efficiently. Thus making the modern society to text because its the fastest way of communication.

Moreover, the reason behind not understanding what the other person is feeling is because of social media. For example I would understand how my other members feel about my decision by observing the non-verbal communication such as hand gestures and body language. However, all this cant be observed through typing out and communicating through social media. There are some who argue that emotion can be shown using emoticons but what if the other person is just hiding their feelings. All this feeling is hidden in the text which only experts can understand. Normal students and teenagers wouldnt know a lot just by looking at the text messages. Rather than using social media which uses text, I would recommend those which can call and see the other side. Such as Skype where there is a video call for the communicator to communicate with the person he or she is communicating.

Besides that, interpersonal communication is not the only one that has been mistaken by looking at the positive aspects, personal relationships is also mistakenly consider on the positive aspects when there are negative aspects to consider. An example of a personal relationship is between you and your boyfriend or girlfriend having to meet each other maybe the best thing in the world but when you both communicate more you tends to find out more things about each other. There can be good which allows to relationship move smoothly and it can be bad which we call it baggage. Baggage is the bad things that come with the person; it can be his/her bad habit or maybe something else which you yourself cant stand it. This causes many flaw in your personal relationships and may lead to break ups and even divorce. Having a conscious mind can alert you from saying things which are best not said to others.

Furthermore, another personal relationship is friends relationship. For example John is very close to Sarah and so is Jeremy but Jeremy and John were Childhood friends making them really close compare to the relationship with Sarah. After some long time this friend relationship has transformed into a love relationship resulting in a love triangle but all of them want to preserve their relationship. This is a negative aspect of personal relationship and causes a tough decision that has to be thought through many times. If any one of them would sacrifice their friendship just to create a love relationship with another the one person who is left alone will be in sorrow and would be very depress.

Thus, A friend relationship is very important in a way they will help you through the hard times and will be with you forever where as in a love relationship it may not last.

In conclusion, the negative aspects which are not aware of in the interpersonal communication and personal relationship are using social media as a medium to communicate, the baggage seen in a love relationship and the closeness between best buddies leading to a love relationship and destroying friend relationship. All this can be avoided by asking for advice from those who are close to you to make a rational decision. Furthermore you can strengthen relationships and improve communication with one another by using face to face conversations rather then using any social media.
