Underbalanced drilling (UBD) is a very useful technique to drill wells in order to minimise formation damage that is common in conventional overbalanced drilling operations and enhance reservoir characterisation during drilling. In addition to minimising formation damage and enhancing reservoir characterisation, other benefits related to UBD can be obtained related with drilling performance such as an increase in penetration rate, the elimination of lost circulation problems, and differential pipe sticking. UBD is not a new technique, and numerous successful projects have been executed both globally as well as regionally in the Middle East. Global industry adoption of the technique however, remains low, and many continue to refer to UBD as a niche technology. Are the reservoir related benefits poorly understood? Have the correct reservoir candidates been drilled underbalanced? Are the operational risks understood adequately, or is the technique deemed too risky? Is the value derived from UBD high enough to warrant its use? In this workshop we will endeavor to discuss these questions and uncover the issues that may lead to universal adoption of UBD. The workshop will review the progress made in the application and deployment of the technology over the years, and will be used to update operators, drilling contractors and service suppliers understanding of the value delivered by all aspects of UBD. The programme will also include discussion about the HSE considerations on UBD operations and several case studies from the Middle East and worldwide. What is UBD? When this technique is properly executed, the pressure in the column of drilling fluid is, intentionally, maintained below the formation pressure. In the case of a reservoir where the pore pressure is less than the specific gravity of static oil, the density of the drilling fluid can be reduced by injecting gas. The application of UBD has permitted the commercial development of numerous gas and oil reservoirs worldwide. UBD is increasingly used to reduce near wellbore formation damage problems in oil and gas producing formations, however, it is not necessarily a panacea for all formations. If implemented properly, UBD can increase oil and gas well profitability by reducing invasive formation damage to maximise production rates. UBD has only become possible as a result of the integration of many developing technologies that facilitate directional control of the well trajectory, control of the bottom hole circulating pressure, and the safe handling of drilling fluids and drill cuttings on surface.

In the last decade, UBD has seen an increasing utilisation in the Middle East and throughout the world. But inspite of this technique evolving to overcome many challenges and managing to gain a level of acceptance among the operating companies, it is still regarded as a niche application. There are many cases where a huge upside potential justifies the perceived higher risk of an underbalanced drilling operation. The goal of this session is to showcase how successful UBD projects have managed the HSE aspect of the operation and to discuss how the HSE management plan has become one of the key elements that is addressed in the front-end engineering of every new UBD project. Underbalanced drilling is a process that is not applicable to all reservoirs. Identification of suitable candidates early in the planning process contributes not only to the success of the drilling operation, but also to longer term well and reservoir performance. In this session we will explore what are the key criteria considered and how they are combined in the selection process. We will also look at how the main value drivers impact well economics and serve to optimise well design.

It is the way the industry gathers required information to evaluate different formations, from the surface to the deepest reservoir. It defines the most efficient way to access and exploit existing oil and gas reserves. The data generated feed the requirements of different groups and specialties. During underbalanced drilling operations non-conventional drilling fluids, like gasified fluids, are normally utilised which can restrict the use of certain type of logging mechanisms. Surface equipment design and setup are two of the most critical elements in ensuring an efficient and safe underbalanced drilling standalone operation. Since the introduction of underbalanced drilling in the late 80s, a few early attempts were made to tackle the simplest well designs using a mix and match set of equipment to achieve the objectives, but poor performance limited the growth of the application. At the time the poor economics associated with underbalanced drilling and the fact that well designs had to be compromised to meet the limited capabilities of the surface equipment made conventional drilling the safer, more attractive method of well construction. In the last few years some long term technically challenging underbalanced drilling campaigns in North America and the Middle East have led to the development of new fit-for-purpose equipment. This new equipment exhibits improved efficiency which in turn extends the operating envelope to cover almost all types of wells and improves underbalanced drilling economics. Currently, the luxury of choice between either a hybrid unit or a coiled tubing drilling rig supported with state-of-the-art data acquisition systems exists. These data acquisition systems permit online KPI monitoring which in turn allows real-time adjustment of operational parameters to achieve an excellent level of drilling control. These technological advancements in underbalanced drilling now make a comparison with conventional drilling meaningful from an economic standpoint. The additional benefit of the improved well productivity associated with underbalanced drilling magnifies the overall value of this drilling technique. Closing the performance gap between standalone units and conventional drilling methods will facilitate the transition of underbalanced drilling from a niche service to a universally accepted alternative.

Two (2) days of informal discussions prompted by selected keynote presentations and discussions. Workshops maximise the exchange of ideas among attendees and presenters through brief technical presentations followed by extended Q&A periods. Focused topics attract an informed audience eager to discuss issues critical to advancing both technology and best practices. The majority of the presentations are in the form of case studies, highlighting engineering achievements and lessons learnt. In order to stimulate frank discussion, no proceedings are published and the press is not invited to attend.

Breakout Sessions

Attendees will be assigned to discussion groups on a random basis for the break-out sessions to maximise the opportunity to interact with other participants.

Documentation

Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not expected from speakers. Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting projects are sought. Professionally-prepared visual aids are not required; handwritten view graphs are entirely acceptable. Note-taking by participants is encouraged.

Poster Session

The Steering Committee encourages registrations from professionals who are able to prepare and present a poster on a relevant project. For further details kindly contact Regina Alphonso, event coordinator, at ralphonso@spe.org. Posters will be judged and the best poster will be awarded by the workshop steering committee.

Attendance

Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Steering Committee encourages attendance from those who can contribute to the workshop most effectively either in discussions or with posters. A mix of attendees in terms of geographic origin, companies and disciplines will be encouraged.

Workshop Deliverables

The Steering Committee will appoint a scribe to record the discussions and to produce the full workshop report for SPE. This report will be circulated to all attendees as the workshop deliverable within 46 weeks following the workshop. The copyright of the report is with SPE. PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on a specific SPE URL address after the workshop. Provision of the materials by the speakers will signify their permission for SPE to do so.

Commercialism

In keeping with ATW objectives and the SPE mission, commercialism in posters or presentations will not be permitted. Company logos must be limited to the title slide and used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter and others involved in the work.

Attendance Certificate

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting to their participation at the workshop. This certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed Workshop Questionnaire.

Continuing Education Units Registration Information

Attendees at this workshop qualify for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of the workshop. This is a nonresidential workshop. The registration fees include all workshop sessions, materials, daily coffee breaks and luncheons, certificate of Continuing Education Units (CEU), and welcome reception and dinner (if applicable).
