Meeting with Dmitry Mezin

Our DX-Mirror editor, Dmitry Mezin and his wife Zulfiya were visiting Copenhagen a couple of days in the middle of September. Anker and I had the possibility to meet them for a couple of hours in their busy programme in Copenhagen. (Read below). Before they came to Copenhagen they visited Minsk, Helsinki, Vilnius and Riga, quite a trip I must say. We had a very good talk about many subjects, but of course mainly about our common hobby. It was nice to meet you Zulfiya and Dmitry, hoping to meet you at another occasion.

The correct bank account number to be used is:

Danske Bank, 2-12 Holmens Kanal, DK 1092 Copenhagen K, Denmark Bank: DK 44 3000 4001 528459 BIC: DABADKKK

Next Deadline: SWN No. 8/13 October 24th SWN No. 9/13 December 5th
Please note that we prefer, that you send your contributions directly to the various editors

Important notice:
Due to my forthcoming holidays in Burma and Thailand, the next deadline will one week earlier, so that the date will be October 24th 2013. Anyway we still look forward for your contributions.

DSWCI questionnaire
Our DSWCI questionnaire has already been answered by more than 70 members! Thank you very much for that! It will be a valuable basis for further evaluation. Best 73, Anker How about you? You can still reach it if you are in a hurry!! (Ed.)

Dmitry and Zulfiya After his return to Kazan, we received these kind words: I'm sending you my Q2013 feedback, and also my great thanks for the friendly meeting in Copenhagen! We're already back home, a bit tired after the travel, but anyway it's better than to go to some Turkish (or similar) resort, swim / take solar bath and be in idleness (Zulfiya may not agree, hi hi.) We've walked through the whole center, saw the Nyhavn, Little Mermaid, yellow 2-storey navy houses (wow, ordinary people do live there yet!), Tivoli park, Glyptoteque etc. Really great! A bit sad that Copenhagen is too expensive for tourists and cards of foreign banks are not accepted in some shops (our Raiffeisenbank cards were refused several times)/ Well, I hope it can improve. Anyway, if a Danish person comes to Russia, he/she can also find some similar issues... Zulfiya sends you her greetings, and we both would be happy to meet you in Kazan some day in future!. 73, warm regards, Dmitry

Report from EDXC Conference in Portugal

by Anker Petersen
When the new Secretary General of the European DX Council (EDXC), Kari Kiveks, in February 2013 invited us to the annual EDXC Conference (so far the 46th held!) in the beautiful Portuguese Beach resort Figueira da Foz nearly 200 kms north of Lisbon on September 06-09, very few non-Portuguese participants knew of this place beforehand. As excellently explained by Mika Palo, the local Finnish/ Portuguese co-ordinator, who took care of our transport from Lisbon Airport to Figueira da Foz, the name of this city means Fig Trees at the mouth of the Mondego river.

strong balance and has been able to reduce its membership fee with 50%. The EDXC Landlist needs to be updated and translated into various languages. Two EDXC Conferences were suggested in autumn 2014 and 2015: St. Petersburg and Nice. Below is Alexander Beryozkin suggesting St. Petersburg. Nice was preferred to be first by the audience, because we have not had a Conference in France since 1994. An EDXC voting will take place in October 2013.

The Secretary General then gave his proposals to new tasks in the EDXC. The DSWCI had raised the question about a common European Data format for DX-loggings at our AGM, which was followed by a useful debate. DX-ers at the Meeting Point in Lisbon Airport (From left: Arto, Antti, Kaj, Ydun, Pirkko, Simo, George, Else, Gunnel and Bengt).

30 DX-ers and spouces attended this EDXC Conference, which included the following present DSWCI-members: 0093 Kaj Bredahl Jrgensen and 0099 Anker Petersen (Denmark), 0480 George Brown and 0974 Dave Kenny (U.K), 1365 Tibor Szilagyi (Sweden), 2281 Andreas Schmid (Germany), 3347 Christian Ghibaudo (France), 3532 Jos Rainho (Portugal), 3594 Toshi Ohtake (Japan), 3659 Arto Mujunen and 3765 Kari Kiveks (Finland), 3667 Alexander Beryozkin (Russia), and our former members: 0743 Dario Monferini (Italy), 1803 Mika Palo (Finland/ Portugal), 2470 Ydun Ritz (Denmark) and 3666 Bengt Ericson (Sweden). Thus this became also a big DSWCI gathering! Photo taken by Toshi Ohtake. On September 07 Kari Kiveks and Jan-Mikael Nurmela officially opened the Conference with a status of the EDXC now. Tapio Kalmi has become the webmaster of www.edxc.org and JanMikael has introduced http://edxcnews.wordpress.com where inputs are welcomed.

Risto Vhkainu then gave a talk about Quo vadis what will happen with EDXC and the DX-ing ? First the history of DX-Clubs, where most in Europe were formed in 1954-59 and the EDXC was founded in 1967. Risto suggested, that the 50 years EDXC Jubilee Conference in 2017 takes place in Finland, which the same year can celebrate its 100 years of independance. During the Cold War in Europe, Shortwave and Mediumwave were dominated by the powerhouse transmitters and jamming stations untill 1989. Since then, the number of international broadcasts have been considerably reduced and many stations closed. Thus at present, on mediumwaves there are excellent DX-conditions!

To be continued on 23 and 24. The EDXC now has 13 DX-Clubs as full members and 3 DX-ers as individual members. The Council has a healthy finance with a DSWCI Short Wave News September/October 2013 2

Dear friends, This September brought me some positive experience: my wife and I visited Copenhagen for a couple of days during our silver wedding special travel. Weve got a friendly meeting in the Danish capital with Anker Petersen and Kaj Bredahl Jorgensen, thank you guys! All in all, weve visited 5 countries, had a nice time, returned home a bit tired but quite happy. 73s from Dmitry DX NEWS ANTARCTICA 15476, LRA36, R Nacional Arcangel San Gabriel, Base Esperanza, 1830-2050, Aug 13, 16 and 25, Sep 13, programmes in Spanish, talks about Argentina, playing famous Argentine pop/rock songs, Spanish cultural news (nuevo museo), some full IDs every now and then; quite weak at tune in, but becoming stronger around 1900 with a peak around 2000 (S6-7 on the PERSEUS SDR), after that becoming a lot weaker, lost in the noise around 2050 (s/off?); at its peak it was 34433. 5895, LKB LLE-3 Bergen Kringkaster, probably via Delsbo, Sweden, had a test broadcast Sep 11 all day in USB from an inverted "V"-antenna. Power 50 watts. We used dual voice IDs in English and Norwegian, jingles and morse IDs. Signed off at 2000. 1314 MW will follow in due course. Chief engineer is LA7CFA ystein Ask. (Martinsen). Heard at 0738, Sep 11, with good signal at this time. (Nilsson) PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3874.84, UNID, possibly NBC, first noted on 3874.6v at 10571101, Aug 09, talk by a man, seemingly in English and with references to "PNG", advs, brief techno (dance) music and unmistakable NBC news theme at 1101 // to the news on much stronger 3385 NBC East New Britain. Warbly, weak and unstable transmitter, measured drifting down to .57-ish. On Aug 10 heard on 3874.84 and drifting downward...noted with general conversation by woman but some distortion. Did not seem to be // to other NBC outlets, but at 1157 again // 3385 NBC East New Britain. Also heard around 1930 with morning program with good level and also noted running // 3385. (Seager and Sharp in ARDXC forum, via Berg and van Arnhem). Doesnt look like NBC New Ireland drifting from 3905; I have often heard NBC New Ireland on 3905 in the past, normally with decent reception, whereas this UNID was below threshold level (no audio, just open carrier). NBC New Ireland was never anywhere near that weak; never! Also they were always on 3905; never any variation. Also David Sharp reported the UNID as being // to NBC East New Britain at times, something New Ireland would not be doing. On Aug 30 it was heard again with the usual drifting; not strong enough at my location for any audio yet; seemed to go off in sync with 3385. (Howard) There is a technical crew wandering around the various provincial sites trying to breathe life into various older SW transmitters. I'd hazard they're Japanese supplied under some aid program at some stage. The same crew is also installing 1, 2 or 3 FM transmitters at the same site and putting FM aerials onto the single tower. The end result being that Rabaul would have NBC East New Britain on SW/FM, NBC National on FM and NBC Tribe FM [youth service] on FM. All from the one existing and upgraded SW tower system... It might be that the two spurs around 3874.8 are linked to two of the new FM transmissions, bolted as they are onto an old SW tower of doubtful engineering repute and accompanied by a recently gingered up older SW transmitter that may or may not last until next time the wandering technical crew find their way back to Rabaul. I am very happy that we again have received some letters to the Letterbox section, mainly remarks to the questionnaire published last time in SWN and about the recent EDXC Conference. More letters, comments and/or remarks are as always welcome. The first letter comes from our good friend 3347E Christian Ghibaudo, France who writes and whom we meet in Portugal: Back from Portugal. It was once again a great pleasure to see you , Kaj and Else. Also very interesting to meet newcomers as Ydun Ritz and Antti Hemmil. Very pleasant days spent in the company of longtime friends. I hope that next year, I could make you discovering Nice and its region. The choice of the hotel will be important because in Figueira I realized that we need an easily accessible location not too far from transport and other places of interest. I first found a pretty nice place on the sea side, with affordable prices, even in Nice. But far enough away from restaurants and shops in downtown. Using taxis were too expensive (as taxis are quite expensive in Nice). Even if the price of a room is higher an hotel near downtown will be more useful. Ill share my research with Kari in a few weeks. About DX, this Wednesday, I was able to listen to Test transmissions from Norway. In the morning, I receive this message, by e-mail. LKB LLE is test broadcasting all day on LLE-3 5895 kHz USB in the 49 meter band Shortwave from an inverted "V"antenna. Power 50 watts. We use dual voice IDs in English and Norwegian, jingles and morse idents. Sign off 2000 UTC 2200 CET. Reception reports as sound files in mp3 to: styret@bergenkringkaster.no. 1314 kHz will follow in due course. Chief engineer is LA7CFA ystein Ask. So in the evening, I listen to the frequency and I heard it. So at 1952 UTC SINPO was: 35333, short messages with Morse identification and also id. in English this is KKB Bergen and Norwegian. I hear this transmission in the mountain in Tende, without city noise. Have a nice end of summer! 73s, Christian Ghibaudo. 2897E Harald Kuhl, Germany writes: I now started listening to distant MW and SW stations on portable receivers (using external antennas if possible). These are of course not as sensitive and selective as an AR7030 or an SDR. But with a portable receiver you can simply walk away from all these electrical interferences around our homes and so you can catch real DX again. 3697 Omar Cheishvill, Russia wants to say thank you for the AGM held in June. He writes: I write to you as quickly as possible after returning from the rally that would like to thank you for the warm welcome. very grateful to your colleagues from the Danish club for hosting the meeting. I liked it very much and I will remember for a long time about our meeting in Denmark. You are a great organizer and your club is more like a large family than an organization. I look forward to our next meeting and cooperation in our passion! I invite you to visit us at your convenience, waiting for you to indulge in a new club! All members of the club's big hello from St. Petersburg! I wish you good luck and prosperity. From 3612E Luigi Cobisi, Italy comes this re. the EDXC meeting Best wishes to you all at the EDXC Conference in Portugal. I'm very sorry I'm not participating. I'm sure you'll enjoy the atmosphere of that beautiful country and radio listening from there. I was in Portugal last June and happy to find their MW stations are still on and I could listen to some Spanish and Moroccan sta-

tions quite good. Check 594 and 963 (R. Sim by Radio Renascena) 666 (Antena 1 RTP, also relaying tv audio during some prime time series) 648 (RNE Badajoz) 774 (RNE Orense) 1125 (RNE 5 Badajoz). Quite stark were also 1550 in Arabic and France Info from Nice ( ! ) on 1557 kHz. In Lisbon there's also a very good radio museum at RTP building. I was there for Rotary Club World Congress and we were some 18,000 people from all over the world. I wondered as I entered the main congress hall and found I could get simultaneous translations from English and Portuguese in seven languages just switching on a FM radio I had in my portable phone. Low powered transmitters could work just around 100 meters but it was sufficient to help everyone. For those believing radio is a tool of the past this was a very nice demonstration how useful it is.

Two charming hostess at Radio Sim, and Radio Renascena Another letter also from Luigi, but a little bit older, where he has these points of views I enclose my questionnaire. It's a good idea to hear comments from members around the world. It's not a easy season for our hobby. I noticed radio sets are not easily available to young people: they know it in their parents' car and as a tool inside portable phones and digital TV. More, during my holidays I noticed wireless internet and other electrical appliances do disturb MW and SW making listened quite a difficult task in most of hotels. (Yes, I had very much noise when trying to listen to SW in the hotels in Portugal ed.) But radio still is the most followed medium with over 35 millions Italians over 60 millions tuning in it at least one time daily. Best greetings and thank you, Luigi. Here are some small remarks from some of those who send the questionnaire, thank you for that. DSWCI 0370 Noel R. Green, United Kingdom: It might be of interest to some members to know what internet broadcasters are available and what programmes they are broadcasting. DSWCI 0621 Claes-W. Englund, Sweden: I still regard your SWN indeed very good with accurate and solid tips and news, which are of great value for my kind of DX. I also like the SWN in paper still. DSWCI 0798 Jerry Berg, U.S.A.: It's great that you and DSWCI continue to hold the "DX banner" high! It is such a discouraging DX-environment these days. DSWCI 1483 Max van Arnhem, The Netherlands: Small notes with links on the internet are OK for me; Links to cultural and other interesting information is no problem, but page filling text which also can be found on the internet is a bit of waste of space and time. A combination of the AGM and EDXC Conference could attract more participants. Also, like in 2012, having a bit longer conference could attract more members. Most important is actual information, like DX Window; also QSL information is important and could be extended with addresses and v/s names.

RADIO ON THE NET
By Kurt renlund Pedersen In continuation of our questionnaire we now open up for a new small column concerned with radio on the Internet. The column will appear in SWN from time to time, dependent on your interest! This time we offer you two ideas. Radio Canada Radio Canada offers a free daily e-mail newsletter called Cybermagazine, which can be ordered at: http://www.rcinet.ca/en/cybermagazine/ The magazine gives quite a lot of information about the programming of Radio Canada International. Its worth to explore! A weekly programme is Link Online in which different stories and their context are presented. Further listeners comments are presented. You can find the link to the programme on the home page as The Link Online Our weekly show. Look about half down on the page in the right column. Radio Tropicana in Bogota, Columbia Can be heard on http://streema.com/radios/play/138 with a lot of South American music and advertisements. The sound brings you back to the good old days in the 1950ies! However it may take some time to connect. This was all for this time Let us know if you have other good sites concerned with radio or just general information - on the net - Kurt.

The DX-Clubs suffer from less and older members and financial problems in printing their DX-bulletins. These tend to become more and more digital. The EDXC has held a Conference every year except in 2004. Their printed bulletins have been replaced by information on websites. In the afternoon, we first visited the local Salt Museum at the impressive Salt lake:

After that Dario Monferini (right) talked about his recent tour to Peruvian radiostations with slides presented by Christian Ghibaudo. Here is shown Radio La Cronica:

At 2030 we had an excellent, traditional EDXC Banquet which was followed by a very nice folkdance show from a local group from a village Alhabas 10 kilometres east of Figueira da Foz.

After that, we visited a local FM-station in Figueira da Foz, Rdio Foz do Mondego, where the Director of Programmes, Fernando Rodriguez, gave us a briefing about their broadcasting on 99.1 MHz and internet at 0700-2400 weekdays and 24 hrs weekends.

On Sunday morning we took a long bus ride to the city Coimbra, which university is a UNESCO heritage site. On our bus tour Mika Palo kindly demonstrated several local FM stations with translation of their IDs. In Carapinheira we made a sho rt stop at the RDP Emissor Santa Isabel. But we did not try to get in, because it was guarded by dogs and live bullfighting bulls!

At 1800 Mika Palo (left) and our member Jos Rainho presented an excellent overview about Radio broadcasting in Portugal by the DX-er Lus Carvalho, who was unable to be present. His website is at http://www.mundodaradio.com/ in Portuguese.

DSWCI Short Wave News September/October 2013 23

On our walk through the Coimbra, we saw some students in their typical dark uniforms. The former EDXC Secretary, Tibor Szilagyi, had a funny conversation with a female student, who sold postcards. They are shown on the next photo:

On our return tour we visited one of the local wineyards where we tasted their products, saw the wineyards and had lunch. On Monday we went back to Lisbon by bus. There we first visited RDP International and after lunch Rdio Renascena. We were given excellent briefings at both stations. Apropos the conference Quo Vadis lecture, RDP told us, that they had cancelled DAB five years ago and expect that future Radio and TV broadcasting will be entirely via the internet!

A After that we visited a wine museum. Back at the hotel, Anker Petersen gave a slide show from his DX-pedition last November to Malaysia and Sumatra. At 2100 we had a joint DSWCI dinner and an EDXC farewell dinner at Restaurante Acrpole in Figueira da Foz with 17 taking part in the DSWCI dinner. At the end a special EDXC Cake was presented. The photo shows Kari Kiveks (in the middle) and Jan-Mikael Nurmela being ready to share this delicious cake to the participants. The photo was taken by Toshi Ohtake. This tour ended with a sightseeing in central Lisbon. Thank you to Mika Palo and the local guide Joo Gomes for organizing this EDXC Conference!!! We look very much forward to the next conference in 2014, probably to be held in Nice. ed.
