The 21st century will be the century in which we redefine ourselves as the first country in world history that is literally made up of every part of the world. r. !enneth "rewitt, #irector of the $.%. &ensus 'ureau, 1(()*2++1 The ,irst recommendation that I would ma-e as a consultant to a law enforcement agency, to improve awareness of cultural diversity is start a training class, on cultural awareness. I would structure the training in this class, to start by discussing past cultural problems, in all departments, nationwide. The class would be open for discussion and suggestions, on how to improve on the past and current problems with cultural diversity. The second training class would focus on studying and learning about various cultures and religions in the communities that they serve and protect. 'y offering a religious.spiritual training course, the police officers and society will benefit in various ways. /fficers will avoid actions that can offend people or increase potential ris- when communicating with minority during a routine stop. It helps if officers are mindful and respectful of all cultures and all religions, as it states in the constitution. &ongress shall ma-e no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free e0ercise thereof1 or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press1 or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the 2overnment for a redress of grievances. 3 ount, 2+1+4 The third recommendation I would ma-e would be for the officers to ta-e a class in language and communications. I thin- it would be helpful and useful, if officers who are wor-ing in communities, that have people who spea- different languages, that they learn the language. I thin- 5osetta stone would be a great learning tool, that is ine0pensive, to help the departments achieve this goal. In conclusion all of my recommendations are based on funding, and without the funding, and training, we will not see any improvement at all. In fact we will see more wrongful shootings, arrests, and convictions if these recommendations are not followed through with. The training needs to start, and become an ongoing class, with all the police departments in the country.
