Slide 1: My Introduction Slide 2: Behaviorist Theory There are many theories which explain how children acquire language. One of these theories is the behaviorist theory in which parental involvement is most important. In this particular theory positivity motivates and negativity discourages the child. Slide 3: Nativist Theory Another theory is the nativist theory of language acquisition. In this theory Noam Chomsky believed every child was born with the natural ability to learn language. This theory says no reinforcement or modeling is needed. Slide 4&5: Piaget & Assimilation/Accommodation Everyone knows who Jean Piaget is right? Well his theory of cognitive development is built on the principle that children develop through their activities. Childrens first few words are always egocentric. They learn language and develop because of things in their schemas which they add to and adjust as they mature in age. Slide 6&7: Vygotsky & Zone of Proximate Development Another psychologist everyone knows is Lev Vygotsky. In his theory adults teach children the names of things. In his theory there is a zone of proximal development. The children only need the adults help until they gradually become independent enough to be on their own.

Slide 8: Constructivist Theory The constructivist theory is another theory dealing with how children acquire language. This theory comes from Piaget and Vygotsky. It supports the idea of children controlling and constructing what they learn. People who support this theory believe language is an active social process.

Slide 9: Halliday Then there is Hallidays theory of language development. This theory contains seven different functions. What can be said reflects what can be done. Language is learned when it is believed to be relevant and functional. Slide 10: Instrumental The first function is the instrumental function. In this function, children use language only to get things done and to satisfy their personal needs. The book example is Cookie Mommy because the child wanted a cookie. You would see this in classroom when children problem solve or persuade. Slide 11&12: Regulatory The second function is called the regulatory function. This is where children use their words to control others around them. The book example is sleep now because the child wanted someone to sleep. You would see this in classroom when children make up rules in games and give instruction. Slide13&14: Interactional

The third is called interactional. This function of language is what children use to get along with others. The book example is you want to play? because the child wanted to play with a peer. You would see this in classroom when children talk in groups or have structured play. Slide 15&16: Personal The fourth function is called personal and that is exactly what it is; a child using language to tell about themselves or to express personal interest. The book example is Im running now. You would see this in classroom when a child expresses feelings to either their peers or adults around them. Slide 17: Heuristic The fifth function is called the heuristic function. In this function, children use language to learn new things. The book example is what are cows for because the child has never come in contact with a cow or ever learned about them. You would see this in classroom whenever a child questions something. Slide 18: Imaginative The sixth function is the imaginative function. This is where you see children using their imagination to play make believe or to create things. The book example is Lets play space. You would see this in classroom when children use nonsense word play and act out stories. Slide 19: Informative The final function is the informative function. This is where children use language to tell something in order to inform others. The book example is Ill tell you how this game works. You would see this in classroom when a child tries to convey a message. Slide 20: Closing
